  5. 'Embarassing to be in this position'published at 20:49 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Everton 1-0 Bournemouth

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher talking to Sky Sports: "I am from the city and Everton haven’t punched above their weight for a long time. To be in this position for two years is awful.

"When I hear 'the commitment and mentality got us over the line' it is embarassing they were in this position. Don’t be celebrating too much, be relieved, but don’t celebrate too much.

"Those players got away with a lot because of the board. But in terms of the players they have been shocking, absolutely awful."

Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse: "I think it's a positive end to what's been a difficult season.

"It sums up our season. A slow start and you give yourselves a mountain to climb. Fortunately we were able to claw it back but yeah it sums up our season and where we're at at the moment.

"There's still a lot more quality to look at in the squad. We take the positives from today and it's important everybody has a good break and we come back strong next year.

"I'm emotional. It's tough when you care and love the club as much as I do. I've been here since I was eight years old. It's not easy to see what's unfolded this season.

"II just want to get away and have a break now, it's been a tough season. On a personal note, I feel as if I've done everything I can for this club in the time that I've been here. I look forward to getting a break and switching off.

"We as a club haven't been good enough. Not only as a team but everything around the club has not been up to standards. But the club will be back to where it has been."

  7. 'What is the strategy of the club?'published at 20:46 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Leeds 1-4 Tottenham

    Leeds United

More from Leeds manager Sam Allardyce, speaking to BT Sport: "It has been a saga for the club. I am sad the club is getting relegated after working so hard to get back up. The rebuild has to be something that is particularly well planned by everybody at the club for next season.

Does he want to be part of that? "Well, I don't know. I can only come to that decision if they want me and also on what is the outlook of the club going to look like? What is the strategy of the club? What is the staffing going to look like on and off the field? Which direction do you want to go? That is a pretty big strategy to put in place."

  8. Smith has 'no idea' about his futurepublished at 20:45 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Leicester 2-1 West Ham

    Leicester City

Leicester interim manager Dean SmithImage source, Getty Images

Leicester interim boss Dean Smith to BBC Sport: "We played well today and deserved the win. For 60 minutes we were really good. Pleased with that aspect but devastated for everyone in the club we couldn’t get over the line.

"I didn’t [follow the other game]. I felt it was irrelevant for me. I was concentrating on trying to win the game. From there we’d see what happens.

"The remit was always seven weeks and eight games and I felt we’d need 11 points. We fell short with nine. I’ll look back on the Leeds and Everton games where we lost points.

“People will have to look into the future and what the club does. There will be a review. I can’t comment on that. My remit was seven weeks and try to keep us in the Premier League and I failed on that.

"Everyone knows this club is built to be an elite level club. You get knocks in life buit your job is to bounce back. The place is set up for success. Unfortunately this has been a tough year. In the short time I’ve been here, [I think] they’ll bounce back.

“The beauty of it is they [fans] will continue to support their club. They’ll come back. Hopefully the club can be successful and bounce straight back. The fans would desevre that."

On whether he will be stay at the club: "I have no idea. We haven’t even discussed it, talked about it, thought about it. The job was to come in, concentrate on each game – I couldn’t even tell you who was out of contract. Unfortunately I feel like I failed for the owner but it’s a long season."

  9. 'Now is the moment to do things'published at 20:44 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Arsenal 5-0 Wolves

    Wolves

Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui speaking to Sky Sports: "I am very unhappy today because we want to show another face. It is not easy to play this kind of match when we achieve our aim with three games to play. Our player maybe were thinking about the national team of the future.

"You have to show your best and we didn't. It was a pity. The first two moments they arrive to the box they score but after two zero but the merit of the team to be out of the relegation when you see other clubs with very big squads, we are out.

"Today I am very, very sad because it is not good to finish in this way. With the squad of this year it is not enough and of course we need to improve so we will see what will happen.

"We have done big work in the second half of the season to get out of the relegation zone. If you want to be in the Premier League you have to compete.

"The squad of this year has suffered a lot and a lot. The team deserved to get out of the relegation zone and it is a big achievement for the players but now is the moment to do things and make a good analysis about the future."

FT: Crystal Palace 1-1 Nottingham Forest

    Crystal Palace

    Roy HodgsonImage source, Getty Images

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson, speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought we dominated from start to finish.

"I didn't think our first half was as good as our second half but Nottingham defended like they did Arsenal with plenty of men behind the ball, they did that well but I still think we created enough opportunities and moments to suggest we could have won.

"It's still nice to end the season without losing here today but on another day, with the way we played in the second half especially, the second goal would have come."

On his time as Palace manager: "[I look back on it] with great pleasure and great pride. This spell has probably been the more glamorous but the first one was more important because in those three or four years the club could have gone down at any time.

"We had to work very, very hard to make certain that didn't happen. We put a lot of money back into club coffers that meant we could build the academy. That spell, in my eyes, was just as important as this one.

"This one is more glamorous because to take 18 points from 10 games and only suffer two defeats is a good performance.

"I must say that it is not my work alone. Patrick Vieira started this season off and he won games and got points for the team as well. Between the two of us, we've put the club in the position it wants to be in and the future looks very bright."

On his future: "I haven't spoken to Steve [Parish]. As far as I'm concerned, I had a contract to do a job here, I've done that and I will go back to where I was before the phone call and see what the future holds for me."

  11. 'Big compliment to finish third'published at 20:42 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-1 Fulham

    Manchester United

Erik ten HagImage source, Getty Images

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to BBC MOTD: "I think the three points are justified. I think we created many chances so I am happy with this win and happy with third place.

"To win 27 home games [all competitions] in one season is a big achievement. The penalty save was a turning point. We were better organised in and out of possession after that."

Asked whether he wants to keep David de Gea, Ten Hag added: " Definitely. He wants it and we want it and we will find each other."

On finishing third: "It was a difficult start [to the season]. We grew as a team and as individuals. There are many competitors for the top four position. It's a big compliment for this team."

  12. 'We go to the final in great spirits'published at 20:41 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Leicester 2-1 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham manager David MoyesImage source, Getty Images

West Ham boss David Moyes to BBC Sport: "I thought we got a lot out of it [the game]. We played well for periods. Overall we missed a lot of chances. We would have stepped up a league place but we couldn’t get that second goal.

"I don’t think it’s nice for any manager to see the other manager suffer because their team might go down. I was desperate for a point today to move up a place. I was thrilled by the players’ attitude and performance.

"The final detail of not giving free-kicks away and defending them was the bit we missed today.

On managing the squad for the Europa Conference League final in mind: “We tried over the last week or two to manage it. We played 55 or 56 games. I’d hope 12 or 13 days would be enough. We tried to keep them fit, sharp and ready. The mentality was terrific. Nobody shirked anything.

“We've actually come into our best form in the last month or two. We just missed that finish or defending.

"We go in great spirits. We have a football club who rarely has cup finals or European finals. We go there all together hoping we can come back with a cup."

On Everton staying up: "I only just found out the results. Congratulations to Everton but commiserations to the teams who went down."

  13. 'I wanted to go out with pride'published at 20:39 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Leeds 1-4 Tottenham

    Leeds United

    Sam AllardyceImage source, Getty Images

Leeds manager Sam Allardyce, speaking to BT Sport: "You prepare for a game, you get the players down and put some tactics in, looking at the opposition's strengths and weaknesses and then play the game as best you can. But when you play how we do in a game in those moments and the errors are huge errors - Harry Kane is going to take full advantage, isn't he?

"We messed up again, tried to fight back and messed up again in a big way. Our response to going 1-0 down was good but we couldn't find the back of the net with the huge amount of attempts we had. Of 20-21, we had two on target. That tells you everything. Creating opportunities yes, but taking chances is very poor. At the other end, we switch off and Tottenham have better quality than we have.

"It says it all about Leeds this season. More goals conceded than anyone else. We've scored goals but without stopping the goals going in we couldn't pick up the points. I wanted to go out with some pride today, but unfortunately I didn't see that.

"You can preach to the players all you want, but most goals are conceded by losing the ball in your own half, by your own mistakes. We made critical errors and because of the quality of Tottenham they took full advantage.

"We get back in the game, score a really good goal and lift the crowd and within two minutes they score again. There are enough professionals out there to say 'let's not concede another goal'. That is not what we did. It is all about the basics. It is a pretty simple game."

    Arsenal

    Bukayo SakaImage source, Getty Images

Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka: “Really happy with our performance and I think the season deserved us to close it like this in front of our fans. We wanted to finish with pride after having some really enjoyable moments. Finishing like this we can leave the fans for the summer in a happy way.

“It is a mixed feeling. We’re disappointed because it didn’t end the way we wanted it to but it will be nice to share this moment with our fans because I think they can be proud of us and we can be proud of them as well.

“I think there was a run off games where we didn’t get good performances and momentum went down but we’ve learnt a lot of lessons to take into next season so we don’t make the same mistakes."

  15. 'The future depends on the club'published at 20:36 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Arsenal 5-0 Wolves

    Wolves

    Julen LopeteguiImage source, Getty Images

Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui speaking to BBC MOTD: "It is not easy to play this kind of match when you have achieved a big aim three matches before. We tried to do it but we couldn't. They were at home and wanted to finish well. They are a fantastic team and squad and that is why you are not at your best level.

"I want to highlight the merit of the players in this second half of the season. They finish out of the relegation zone with three matches to go playing against better squads than us.

"With this squad we have suffered a lot. We have to be ready to improve we have to invest and improve if we want to compete next season.

"I am coach of Wolves currently but of course I am ambitious. The most important thing is to say the truth to our fans and If we have a problem we have to solve the problem because we are competing in the Premier League and it has a big, big demand. The rest of the teams will do the same. Now is the moment to analyse and tell the truth.

"The future does not depend on me, it depends on the club. I hope we are going to do the necessary things despite the financial problems. Now we are celebrating being out of relegation against very good teams like Leeds, Leicester and Southampton and next year you can ask me."

    FT: Man Utd 2-1 Fulham

    Manchester United

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire, speaking to BBC MOTD: "It's important that we got the win first and foremost. To play at Old Trafford on the final day, the atmosphere was amazing and it's always nice to send the fans home happy.

"We felt like we were dominant in the game. We conceded from a soft set-play but the save from the penalty was a big point in the game and I think it really woke us up.

"Finishing third, it's obviously a step in right direction. We have still got a lot of work to do to be where we want to be. Last season was a big dip-off. It's good to see the team is progressing.

"I want to play football and start games. This season has been a bit frustrating because I've had niggly injuries and lots of illness. I haven't been available to start since the Seville game.

"I have to make sure I am ready when I am called upon. I have great belief in myself. We have a huge game in a week's time and that's where my focus is at. it is about driving this club forward. I have a huge responsibility on the pitch and off it as well."

    Southampton

    Ruben SellesImage source, Getty Images

Southampton manager Ruben Selles to BBC Sport: "I hope our fans had a good game to see. We just want to make sure that we can show once again we are ready to compete at this level. Events will take us away from the Premier League but this team is ready to bounce back quick.

"I think this performance was there in a lot of games. I think we show in many games we can compete against the very best. We created the first chances, we were in the games. For some reason or the other we're always out of the game. Today was not extraordinary. We have shown we are at this level.

"At 4-2 we needed to keep it a lot more closed. And if we concede a third we need to make sure we don't concede another immediately. But that's football. In front of us is a monster who can beat anybody. It was nice to be competitive."

On Theo Walcott leaving the club: "It's the same with Ward-Prowse. It's mad because he's so big in football what I say cannot add any value. It's been a pleasure to work with Theo, with his tenacity and his professionalism. I wish him all the best."

On James Ward-Prowse being subbed off in the final minutes: "We decided in the last minute to give him this goodbye of the season. It's not about his future. For sure it's his last game in the Premier League with Southampton this year. It was something to give for our captain and we already planned it before the game.

"We thought it was a natural way to do it."

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery to MOTD: "I am very proud of the players' work, I have been very demanding and they have responded very well. At Villa Park our supporters have been very necessary for our work, our project - they were here with us today supporting us.

"Everyone is very happy with this step. Today was our moment. We have an ambitious objective, we are trying to build a strong spirit and a structure. We have time to work more next year and we have one more competition to play, it is an another option for a trophy.

"I want it. I have played in Europe for 15 years and it is fantastic to have it."

    FT: Leicester 2-1 West Ham

    Leicester City

    Jonny EvansImage source, Getty Images

Leicester captain Jonny Evans to BBC Sport: "It’s difficult for the club and everyone involved. I have no doubt the club will bounce back. The Premier League is where everyone wants to be.

"We played well today but it doesn’t mean anything. We had to make sure we won our game and hope the other games went our way but they didn’t.

“It’s hard to know [why they struggled so much]. The bad start sticks in my mind. It’s not easy to turn around. It’s hard to win matches. We found it difficult to recover.

“For the last couple of months we said big game, big game every week. But at the end of the day it went down to the final minutes."

On what decisions the club might make: “I don’t have the answer to that. I’m sure they have a lot of decisions to make. A lot of players are out of contract. There is a lot of talk of players moving on. When there’s a relegation that usually happens. There’s a lot of decisions for the club to make and I’m sure they’ll make the right ones."
