  1. 'It's a nice fairytale'published at 20:27 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Brentford 1-0 Man City

    Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank, speaking to BBC Sport: "[Doing the double over City] is a nice fairytale. It’s a very good narrative for us. The big win was at the Etihad – a very big win.

"Today they still put a very strong team out there. There are a lot of teams that have faced them and lost, but we managed to beat them – well deserved, I think. It summed up a fantastic season for us. The journey we’ve been on is fantastic. I’m so proud."

On missing out on Europe: "We should have beaten Villa, then we would have had Europa Conference League. Anyway, it’s [still] fantastic.

"We’re very ambitious. We want to add layers, we want to be better. The reality is a top six - a top seven with Newcastle - the rest of us are fighting for the rest. The best for us is this, but in the worst [scenario], worse can happen."

Outgoing Liverpool midfielder James Milner to BBC Sport: "Obviously it's a weird feeling when you've been somewhere for so long and shared the times I've had with this dressing room and these fans, I had an amazing send off from them today. It's been like that ever since I have been there.

"It's obviously a strange feeling but all good things come to an end. I've had an amazing time here, achieved a lot, but it has to end at some point unfortunately.

"Every time you win a trophy is special. The journey to become the team that we've become, delivering that league title that the fans wanted for so long. All the trophies to start that era, and I'm sure it's not the end of the era now, but to be part of the building for this team, it's fantastic."

What a mad, gripping and at times unbelievable day. Credit to Everton for getting the job done. Manager of the season for me has to be Thomas Frank, continues to work miracles with Brentford. Special mentions too for Unai Emery for a seriously impressive job with Villa and ETH for making Man United (mostly) enjoyable to support again.

Leicester's relegation means they are the second side to have won the Premier League that has dropped down into the Championship.

The first was Blackburn Rovers, who were relegated in 2012 and are yet to have returned to the top-flight. They even spent a season in League One too.

What does the future hold for the Foxes?

Tottenham manager Ryan Mason, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It is the end of a disappointing season. But all we could do was come here, take care of business and win the match. We have done that and shown a lot of character. I am pleased with the win and performance but disappointed with the season.

"The pitch was longer than I've seen in a Premier League game. There was no water on it. We expected that. To play the football we did... I thought the first goal was outstanding and we had some excellent passages of play. Our front players were outstanding again and to score four away from home was a massive positive.

"Harry [Kane] is a remarkable person, first and foremost. As a player, it speaks for itself. A 30-goal Premier League season is an incredible achievement.

"This is Tottenham Hotspur. We expect to be in Europe. The league table doesn't lie. We are there for a reason. It is important over the summer that we understand why we are in this position and come back stronger."

On his future: "You are asking the wrong person. For everyone's sake, it is important the club makes the right decisions."

Emery was always going to succeed at Villa. He has a curious habit of only doing well at teams with villa in their names - Sevilla, Villarreal and now Aston Villa.

Unai Emery has just given his news conference after guiding Aston Villa into Europe by finishing seventh in the Premier League.

He said: "Sometimes I like champagne, I think today is a champagne moment.

"It's very important to celebrate, I want to celebrate with my players, the staff, the club. I think it's fantastic to play in Europe.

"It was not the first objective of the year, our ambition has been fantastic, they took the ambition that we could do it and it's important to enjoy a moment like this in our lives.

"To be here with the fans, everything is for the fans, they are the heart of the club. We have to be involved with the supporters and start to live moments like today. The supporters can be proud of us, and us of them.

"When we won against Chelsea (2-0 on 1 April) we were with them in 10th and 11th. For a long time that was a difficult step, after we got into the top 10 we started to think of the possibility of being sixth or seventh.

"Of course Europe is going to be difficult but it is a big motivation for me and for everybody else."

Brighton forward Deniz Undav: "Today was a big game and we were hoping to win but we reached Europe and that was our goal. We will be fresh for next season and the focus is to be even better.

"If my goal which was offside was allowed it would have been a different game but this is football. I hope to be a regular next season, I did my job."

On Roy Hodgson's future: "In the changing room all the boys thanked him. We don't know what is happening next year but we thanked him for his effort this year.

"The coaching staff have been brilliant, the team has been playing with confidence and he's instilled that in the lads."

Very happy Man Utd fan here. Third best team in England and a chance to win a cup double. Erik Ten Hag deserves enormous credit. Also want to give a shout out to the Man Utd Women who finished second in WSL in only their fifth season.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We had to wrap it up in the best possible way, playing the way we have the whole season and winning the match. It was a beautiful day."

On Granit Xhaka: "He did what he needed to do and he has done it the whole season. He has been magnificent for us.

"I had the opportunity to say thank you. He is a player who had a special story and he has been integral.

"It is part of my job to make the decisions that are best for the club. His story is really nice."

On the season: "Together we have reconnected with the soul of the club, and the soul of our club is the fans. We know the destination is to bring success and trophies to this club but we must not forget to enjoy the journey.

"It is a special group of players, staff and supporters and it is great to chase that dream with them.

"We have the third best record in our club and it is not enough to win. We know the quality we are facing so we have to seek to be better."

    Crystal Palace

    Roy HodgsonImage source, Getty Images

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I thought we deserved to win because we had many more opportunities and much more of the ball.

"It wasn't a vintage performance, especially in the first half, but if any team was going to win it was us but credit to Nottingham Forest for defending as well as they did last week against Arsenal.

"For us a point is OK, we wanted all three but we're not going to beat ourselves up or lose any sleep over taking one."

On Will Hughes: "It was a good goal and he's played very well since he's got into the team on a regular basis. He's done very well."

On his future: "I have no idea. My situation is very simple: I took on a job, I was pleased to take on the job.

"The mandate was a simple one, to come in and help the team to get the number of points we need to stay in the league. That's what I've done and what I've enjoyed doing."

Would you like to stay? "I'm not prepared to make any comment like that. Before I start talking about whether I want to stay anywhere or take on any jobs, someone better offer me one."

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi expects influential midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo to both leave the club in the summer.

The Seagulls lost 2-1 to Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday, with Argentina World Cup-winner Mac Allister, 24, in tears at the end of the match.

"I think that can be the last game of Alexis and Moises, I'm really sorry," said De Zerbi in the news conference after the game. "They are two great people and two great players."

Brighton were already guaranteed to finish sixth in the Premier League, their highest ever position in their 122-year history as the club secured European qualification for the first time with a place in the Europa League group stage.

However, De Zerbi expects Mac Allister, repeatedly linked with a move to Liverpool, and 21-year Ecuador international Caicedo, who was wanted by Arsenal in January with Brighton rejecting a £70m bid, to change teams. "The policy of Brighton is like this," added De Zerbi.

"I think it's right they can leave, can change teams and play in a level higher. We are ready. We have to find other big players to play without Alexis and Moises."

    Everton

Everton goalkeeper Jordan PickfordImage source, Getty Images

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to Sky Sports: "I'm knackered. It's been a grind again. We spoke about mentality before the game. We gave that in the first half with dedication. We just needed to add that quality. Abdoulaye found that and it's a great strike. It's massive for the club. We don't take anything lightly we just give our all. If you put your work in then you can be proud. We kept going.

"You have to keep going. It was always going to be in our hands today. It was ours to lose not anyone's to gain. You learn a great deal from it but it can't be like this every season and hopefully this is the start of it."

On his save: "It was a good strike but a comfortable height. It was about getting a good parry on it to give us an opportunity to get out. I thought we were solid today and that got us over the line.

"Less stressful than the last two years. It's a massive club. The new stadium is coming soon so it's about everything coming together nicely and pushing forward in the next couple of years."

Southampton goalscorer Kamaldeen Sulemana: "We were playing against a good side. We had confidence. When you have nothing to lose the pressure is easier on you. We were calm on the ball and when you are calm you can create goals.

"I've missed a few, it's been hard mentally. I'm glad to finally score [in the Premier League].

"We allowed them to have the ball. We were more tired in the second half and you could tell we sat back with no energy. These kind of teams can be dangerous when they have the ball.

"I'm new here, but I'm ready for whatever comes next."

Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We knew the context of the game, we knew how massive it was. It was a hard game for us. We created some chances in the first half but Bournemouth played well, they didn't take the game like it as not important for us. But in the end, we managed to score that goal. we were frustrated with the couple of chances we missed but in the end we scored that goal and the club is safe."

On his goal: "To be honest, when you are in this position you need to shoot and it was a perfect position for me to shoot and thank God it went in, it was on target and it gave us the three points. It was incredible. I think about all the season, all my personal life, everything. Everyone knows I have had a difficult season, it was high and low but I finished on the high so very happy. Very happy for the club and the fans, they give everything this year to support us so they deserve that."

On Jordan Pickford's performance: "Everyone make themselves part of it, Jordan [Pickford] is a big part of it. He's England number one. It is not for nothing. He is a great goalkeeper. All the season, you have [James] Tarkowski, [Dwight] McNeil, they play their part. [Idrissa] Gueye was terrific today, he gave me a lot of energy so I thanked him at the end of the game. So happy for everyone, for Seamus [Coleman] as well. Unlucky he was injured but he gave us all his support through the week. We are happy we make it over the line."

Celebration or relief tonight? "It's both of them. We have to celebrate because obviously I score a goal. I am happy to score a goal, I always love to score goals and this one was massive. The season was tough, especially the last three weeks was very tense. We need to enjoy now and to rest but to come back stronger."

Brentford manager Thomas Frank, speaking to Sky Sports: "It’s unique, to be fair. The team deserve a lot of praise. It sums up a fantastic season.

"What I liked the most [about the performance] was that we were very aggressive. We pressed high over the pitch. You have to be brave and also be cool and aggressive. I really enjoyed that."

On whether he is disappointed at missing out on Europe: "No. We did what we had to do. It would have been more difficult if Villa and Tottenham had dropped points and we hadn't won, so no. Sometimes you need to look back where we’ve actually come from.

"To finish ninth with 59 points and the second lowest budget is incredible. Now we want to have a rest and come back as strong as possible.

"One thing [I love] is the characters in this dressing room. They’re remarkable human beings to work with. That’s the biggest secret behind our success."

Liverpool goalscorer Diogo Jota: "I think when we have a game with both teams having nothing to lose, you can expect some goals.

"Eight goals today, obviously we wanted to win but they went for it as well. It was a great game.

"There was a lot of chances both ends. We could've won it, but it's football.

"I think the way we went into the game and going 2-0 early doors, it might have given the wrong feeling. They were up to the challenge as well and came back. We needed to come back as well.

"We went for the game and almost got it. I think it was a good show for the fans.

"I think the run we've had is really good and there's lots of positives we can take building into next season. Hopefully we can have a better one next season."
