  1. 'This is just the first step'published at 19:09 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Brighton

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Villa Park

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is next to talk to the Villa Park faithful and says: "Our success is with you and you are very important and I want to thank all of you.

"You have to have belief in your work and our process. This is just the first step and I'm very happy."

  2. 'Everton threw everything at it'published at 19:08 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Everton 1-0 Bourenmouth

    Stephen Warnock
Former England and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Credit to Everton because they threw everything at it. They were solid, organised, they covered each other. The midfield of Gueye, Doucoure, Iwobi was outstanding as well.

James Garner on that right hand side. What a performance from such a young man, inexperienced within the Premier League, he was showing so much composure on the pitch.

Everton grew into the game, I haven't sampled an atmosphere like that in a long time. That was brilliant. To be here and to be part of that was brilliant, loved it.

Sean Dyche, I'm sure will say it was a collective. Every single player has contributed to that performance. It's a big team performance, it's exactly what was needed.

  3. 'I failed on my part'published at 19:03 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Leicester 2-1 West Ham

    Leicester City

    Dean SmithImage source, Getty Images

Leicester interim boss Dean Smith to Sky Sports: "That was our best performance today. We deserved a win. We put some pressure on but it wasn't to be. When I came here with eight games to go I thought we probably needed 11 points. We’ve fallen two short of that with nine – and it ended up being 11 points. I’ll look back at the Leeds and Everton game, but it’s over a long season. I’m disappointed for the owner here and the staff and the players. It wasn’t to be.

"I didn’t know their [Everton] score. I didn’t want to know. All I was concentrating on was trying to win this game. You hear things around the ground. I just wanted to make sure we did our bit and we did that."

Why did Leicester find themselves in this position? "I don’t think that’s a question for me, interim manager for seven weeks. I failed on my part because I felt we needed 11 points. Leeds and Everton games, two points got away from us. I’m sure there will be a club review but it’s disappointing.

"Every manager will think I could have done this or that but hindsight is a wonderful thing. You finish where you deserve to over a season.

"I don’t know. There will be a review from people who have been here all season and will understand it. Mine was a remit to come in for seven weeks and eight games and try to keep the club in the Premier League. Unfortunately I’ve fallen a little bit short."

On his future: "It’s not a question for now. I’ll have to think about it. At the moment it’s raw because we’ve been relegated."

On their out-of-contract players: "It’s hard for me to answer because I haven't talked about any contracts. I’ve just been concentrating on game to game.

"The time I’ve had with the players, they have been really good. I’ve only had to get into them once in a training session. I felt we were lacking in belief when we first came. We gained confidence but we didn’t pick up enough points."

  4. 'European football has given me a lot'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Brighton

    Aston Villa

    Unai EmeryImage source, Getty Images

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery: "Good evening, I am very proud. These players have really followed me for the last six months, it has been demanding and we are committed.

"We finished perfectly in the last six matches at home, we beat a very good team and to achieve the European place is the best possible end. We will be in Europe which for me is very important. It has given me a lot, it is fantastic, another way and another trophy at the end.

"I am very thankful for every supporter. Historically this is a geat team, we won the European Cup, a long time ago but we can now try to improve and get an ambitious step ahead. This is the first step.

"Europe adds more matches and more difficult moments but I like that. It is very important for us."

  5. 'We fought all season to save club'published at 19:00 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Everton 1-0 Bournemouth

    Everton

    Abdoulaye DoucoureImage source, Getty Images

Everton's matchwinner Abdoulaye Doucoure speaking to BBC Sport: "Yeah, thank you. It was a huge game for us. We are so happy. It's hard to describe our feeling. We fought all season to compete and save the club. This afternoon we gave everything. It was not our best game but we gave everything and got the result.

"I'm always going for the second ball. I knew I had to strike it as hard as possible and hit the target. Thank god it went in. It was an amazing feeling.

"We knew after Jordan Pickford's incident we knew there would be extra time. We were able to run more after the goal. It was long but we got the reward."

On not getting too high: "Of course. Don't get carried away. I'm not a hero. Nobody is here. We work and play for Everton football club. We have to be much better than that. We need to realise the mistakes we made this season. Everyone showed passion at the end but next season we need to come back stronger and put Everton high up."

  6. Where Leeds slipped up this seasonpublished at 18:59 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Leeds 1-4 Tottenham

    Dion Dublin
Former England striker on Final Score

The football they've played [hasn't been good enough]. Energy and attitude I can't fault but the quality hasn't been there. Haven't been able to get enough wins, or keep a hold of leads.

  7. 'Dyche has been exceptional'published at 18:56 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Everton 1-0 Bournenouth

    Martin Keown
Former England defender on Final Score

Just looking at the number of points Sean Dyche has got, he's done exceptionally well. That win at Brighton, how did they go there and win 5-1?

I think before that we thought they'd gone.

Leicester put them in a difficult position but Doucoure stole the moment.

I think the three central defenders at the back really put it on the line today.

  8. 'We were asking the referee, the linesman'published at 18:55 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Leicester 2-1 West Ham

    Leicester City

    Jonny EvansImage source, Getty Images

Leicester captain Jonny Evans to Sky Sports: “Hard to take. We knew it would be a tough ask. We knew we had to win our game and hope something went for us. It didn’t.

"As the game went on we were asking the referee, asking the linesman [about the Everton score]. There were a few cheers but we didn’t know what they were about. We were trying to cope with that and focus on taking our game right to the end.

“It’s hard to put a finger on things. Everyone wants to blame things. As a club we haven’t been good enough. We’re out of the league.

"It’s a great club. I have no doubt it’ll bounce back.

“You have to earn the right. There’s so many good teams in this league. Everything has to go right for you. It’s a really competitive league. It’s tough. If you’re not on it, you get punished.

“After the first couple of months after a bad start it’s hard to turn it round. We got ourselves into a bad place and found it difficult to get out.

"It’s been difficult [with his injuries]. I feel a bit guilty. Maybe pushing it too much with the eagerness.

“You never know what way the club will see things. We will have to deal with the uncertainty. A lot of players are out of contract and I’d guess there will be a lot of changes at the club."

Asked if he knows what his future is, he said "no."

  9. 'Fulham and Brentford have done brilliantly'published at 18:54 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    Dion Dublin
Former England striker on Final Score

All those managers of those clubs that you mention, Brentford and the Fulham, have a strong case for their manager being the Manager of the Season.

They have been coached better and fair play. Especially Brentford. Thomas Frank has been outstanding.

  10. 'Glad to get my first goal'published at 18:53 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

    Anthony GordonImage source, Getty Images

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon: "It was tough chasing the ball in that heat, but we stuck together and it was another top performance. I felt like my goal was never going to come! I had a few chances and I was starting to overplay things in my head but I'm glad to get it. I told [Frank Lampard] I would do it against him!

"I feel like I've got a big summer ahead. It is difficult to adapt to the manager's style because he has such high standards.

"These people haven't had Champions League football for so long and it couldn't happen to better people. I'm delighted for everyone. It is what you dream of. Champions League football is why I joined; because of these expectations."

  11. 'I am looking forward to a nice break and games with England'published at 18:53 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Leeds 1-4 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

    Harry KaneImage source, Getty Images

Tottenham captain Harry Kane, speaking to BT Sport: "We were playing for pride today. We also had the chance to finish seventh but that wasn't the case today. It is about showing the fans some fight and determination. It is not an easy place to come away from home. Leeds are fighting for their lives and we put in a great performance. They put a lot of balls into the box and we stood up to that well.

"We were in the lead the week before and didn't finish out the game. When it went 2-1, credit to the boys for staying in the moment. Getting the third goal helped and killed the game off. Overall, we can go away happy.

"Fantastic for him [Lucas Moura]. He has been really professional and waiting for his moments this season. When someone is out of contract, they might hide but full credit to him. That moment is the perfect moment for him to finish his career with the club.

"It has been a disappointing season. We can't let this win dust over that. A lot to work on. We have had to show fight in some moments. A club this size should not be finishing eighth and we need to go away enjoy a break and look how we can improve.

"It is part and parcel of being a footballer [speculation about him leaving] especially when you are at the top of your game. I have focused on this season and helping the team as much as possible. I am just looking forward to a nice break and some games with England."

We've had raucous singalongs of Gala's 'Freed From Desire' and Oasis' 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and there's no-one leaving from the home fans' sections, while the visitors are heading back to the south coast.

Then the players, accompanied by their children, partners and family members, go on a very slow and fully deserved lap of honour.

Captain John McGinn, who can barely hear the questions over all the noise, gets hold of the microphone and says: "I don't know if you can hear me. It has been a great comeback and we are looking forward to European football coming back to Villa Park.

"The start of the season was not great for anyone, but we turned it around. Bring your passports and see you in Europe."

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, a World Cup winner with Argentina in December, has had an incredible six months and is next to have a chat.

"It's a great feeling to be sure, from where we have come from to where we are now. Let's go to Europe, baby!"

    Mark Schwarzer
Former Middlesbrough & Fulham keeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

There's a sense of real disappointment and disbelief among the fans.

Disbelief of how the club has fallen from winning the Premier League, wining the FA Cup, being in the Champions League to now being relegated and having to start again.

Chelsea have finished the season with their lowest points tally (44) since 1987-88 when they were relegated to the second tier (42), while it’s the Blues lowest league finish (12th) since 1993-94 (14th).

    Aston Villa

The noise inside Villa Park remains incessant. Bruce Springsteen himself will struggle to be louder than this in a few weeks as the players emerge for a lap of honour.

Villa’s victory today was their 18th of the season, only registering more in a Premier League campaign once before (21 in 1992-93).

Their seventh place finish is their highest in a Premier League season since 2009-10 (6th), while next season will be their first in European competition since 2010-11.

Midfielder Jacob Ramsey: "It's unbelievable, when I woke up on my birthday this morning this is all I wanted. Two assists, three points and European football again.

"It's tough to put a finger on what the manager has changed. We had talent in the squad but since he came in he has put his foot down and put pressure on us. They have brought in their own identity and style of play."

  17. 'A real unity has gone into this season'published at 18:48 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

    Eddie HoweImage source, Getty Images

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe to BBC Match of the Day: "A draw was probably fair. I thought we were very good first half, the second half was tough and Chelsea were the better team. I'm delighted with the attitude as we were significantly weakened with a lot of players out through injury. It was a good draw.

"It was an important moment for [Anthony Gordon]. He contributed to that first half, took his goal very well and is a player of undoubted ability. We want that to continue next year

"The away support we've had this year has been incredible. A lot has been made of St James' Park, but the numbers we've taken wherever we've gone and the noise they create is phenomenal. It was great to perform in front of them today.

"When you achieve [Champions League football] it is the work of everybody. A real unity has been hugely important. We'll get going again and rise to the challenge after a little break."

  18. 'Leicester haven't been good enough over the course of the season'published at 18:47 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Leicester 2-1 West Ham

    Mark Schwarzer
Former Middlesbrough & Fulham keeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Leicester have to take stock over what has happened in the last 12 months, where did it go so wrong?

Why do they find themselves in this predicament? Today they put in a good performance but it's too little too late.38 gams in the Premier League, it can come down to the last day of the season which it did today but ultimately it is the other 37 games that play its part as well.

Leicester, over the course of the season, haven't been good enough - along with Leeds and Southampton.
