  1. 'It's about getting players in who want to play for Everton Football Club'published at 19:44 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Everton 1-0 Bournemouth

    Stephen Warnock
Former England and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

There has got to be two to three weeks of planning meticulously and making sure this doesn't happen again. Players will leave, we have seen that Yerry Mina has come out and said he will be leaving the club in the summer.

Now it is about getting the right players in, the players with attitude who want to play for the football club. There has got to be more quality added into this squad.

  2. 'Tears in their eyes' - how the key moment happenedpublished at 19:42 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Everton 1-0 Bournemouth

    Abdoulaye DoucoureImage source, Getty Images

BBC Radio 5 Live's Ian Dennis: "Doucoure with a volley. Oh Doucoure with a volley. Sheer delerium inside Goodsion Park. What a sweet strike from Doucoure. Oh he hit that. It travelled like a rocket and gave the keeper no chance. Everton are doing it again, a last-day escape. What a hit. A goal to rival Barry Horne's from 29 years ago."

Co-commentator Stephen Warnock: "The best player on the pitch, the player who has tried to make things happen. He catches it like you'll never catch a ball again. Goodison Park has absolutely erupted. There are people with tears in their eyes in front of us. Everyone is hugging each other. It is absolutely unbelievable."

  3. 'Build the club into one you deserve'published at 19:40 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Leeds 1-4 Tottenham

    Leeds United

Leeds have released a statement after their relegation:

"Everyone connected with Leeds United is deeply disappointed by the club’s relegation back to the Sky Bet Championship, after three seasons in the Premier League.

"Relegation is painful, and we apologise to our fanbase that the performances this season have not seen the club consolidate our status as we had all hoped.

"However, Leeds United remains in a strong position to build a team that can challenge for promotion from the Championship next season.

"We know things have not been good enough, we know we have to improve, but please be assured that behind the scenes we have worked hard to ensure that the past will not be repeated. Our focus is now on how we get straight back to the Premier League.

"Thank you for your unwavering support for the players and the badge, our objective is to continue to build the club into the one you deserve."

  4. 'I'm really proud of our season'published at 19:36 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-1 Fulham

    Fulham

Fulham boss Marco Silva, speaking to BBC MOTD: "We didn't deserve to lose the game. The game changed completely from that moment [the penalty save]. We should have reacted in a different way. It was a moment for us to show maturity and handle the game in a different way but we haven't done that,

"The game showed again our quality and what we are doing with these players. All season have to be really proud of what we did."

On finishing 10th after promotion from the Championship: "When everyone was saying we would be first ones to go down...we didn't play to shut up anyone. We played for ourselves, our club and our fans. I'm really proud of the way we did it. We kept the same identity from last season."

Southampton fans will be wondering where that chutzpah-laden performance against Liverpool came from today.

It is what they have wanted to see so much this season.

Liverpool were peppering Southampton’s goal, but they were rock solid in defence for a long period and then were lighting quick on the break through the speed of Kamaldeen Sulemana.

But Liverpool found a way back.

And the impetus both showed today needs to be carried forward into next season if they are to improve on what has been a disappointing season for both.

  6. 'You can't just accept alright, you have to strive for more'published at 19:34 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Everton 1-0 Bournemouth

    Everton

Everton boss Sean Dyche speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Very pleasing for me, my staff, the players, the fans and the club. A lot o noise when I got here about it being done, the club was gone, cracks in there. All sorts of stuff. I've been mostly pleased to pull that together somewhat. We've got a connection with the fans, they've been terrific, they've been absolutely amazing.

"The calmness today by the way needs a mention. It's very difficult for fans when they hear results come through. I thought they were immaculate, they stayed calm, they stayed behind the team and willed us to get the right result. We will definitely need that going forwards, there is so much to do here. This is just a start point. I don't think I'm part of the fabric at Everton just yet. Pre season is going to be very, very important here."

On Abdoulaye Doucoure's goal: "I thought he mishit it a little bit. At the end of the day he's been terrific. Special mention to Conor Coady, I left him out but his professionalism has been terrific. He comes back in today and delivers a very strong performance. Ducs has been first class, ever since I walked in the building. I'm not questioning other managers, I don't do that. Everyone has their style, I like him, I always did. He deserved his goal today, a fine strike that wins us the match."

"James Garner has been absolutely terrific. We brought him in knowing he had been injured and we got him back in the side and he has grown into the game and we asked so much of him, so much of Dwight McNeil and they have delivered. There are some unsung heroes who don't always get the big words. They all have played their part in one way or another."

On ensuring Everton aren't in this position again next season: "There's a lot to do. There is a lot to do. But I have assured the players that they need to be ready to work. Players can get trapped in low level acceptance and there have been times where they have thought it will be alright and it won't be alright. You have to continually work for it to be alright, not just alright. You can't just accept alright, you have to strive for more. I have told the players they have to be ready because I'll be ready, trust me."

"We've fought at times when people have knocked us down. You've got to remember, the rhetoric around here has been negative all the time. We beat Arsenal and everyone is positive. By the way, not the fans, the storyline behind the fans. There is a undercurrent at Everton Football Club, we've got to change that, it's only us that can change that."

On how he will spend this evening: "Decompress. I've been in the game long enough, I'm not going to go mad. Just try and chill out a bit. It's been a long arduous journey to get to here, lots of challenges, more than we could ever talk about on this interview and still a lot to go."

  7. 'We have to keep growing as a club'published at 19:31 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

FT: Crystal Palace 1-1 Nottingham Forest

    Steve CooperImage source, Getty Images

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "There should be a tinge of disappointment when you're 1-0 up and not much is in the game.

"But a good performance, we were away from home and everyone knows how that has been this year. After securing status in Premier League last week, I really liked the boys focus and attitude. They've shown that all week and I wasn't worried about the opposite.

"It was a decent game and fairly decent way to end."

On Taiwo Awoniyi's form: "You always want your number nine scoring goals. I've said before that we missed him a lot when he got injured and he missed three months. He was doing well just before that and so to get him back in the form he has shown has been excellent.

"Today's goal was excellent. A good move, we planned to get down the sides of Palace, good ball from Morgan and Taiwo did brilliant to get in, create the chance and score."

On kicking on next season: "That has to be the intention. We've got to have a really busy summer. Not just on the pitch but off the pitch to make sure we keep growing as a Premier League club.

"A lot of work to be done. It's a completely different situation to last year when we got promoted. We've got a base now and we've given ourselves an opportunity. But it is just an opportunity, you have to take it."

  8. 'The club has no ceiling'published at 19:29 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Brighton

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa captain John McGinn: "I was here in the Championship and the owners had a plan and ambition and we have got there the hard way.

"Brighton are a really good team, we just had to stay patient. The fans believed and stayed with us. The manager is a bit mad but he's brilliant, hopefully he stays for a few years and we make more memories.

"Look at this [Villa Park], this is brilliant. Everyone wants to be a part of Aston Villa. Hopefully players that do will see this and want to come.

"The club has no ceiling, we've got a long waiting list for season tickets but now it's time for a beer."

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is out on the pitch to thank the Gunners fans: "Together we have reconnected the soul of this football club and the soul of this football club is you guys.

"We know what is our destination to bring success, joy and trophies to this club but in the meantime please enjoy the journey.

"Thank you for your trust, patience and the unconditional love you are showing to the team, staff and the club."

  10. 'There's a lot of work that needs doing'published at 19:27 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Everton 1-0 Bournemouth

    Everton

Everton manager Sean DycheImage source, Getty Images

Everton manager Sean Dyche speaking to BBC Sport: "Ugly days, brilliant when you win it and glorified, but it's ugly days and there's no joy in that. I was pleased with how the team worked. There's a lot of work to be done. But I'm really pleased.

"We brought a group of players together and I'm learning about the club. The fans care deeply. They know the club isn't where it wants to be but it's a team in a massive transition and we need to build on what we have achieved this season.

"I said it was fantastic in many ways and to enjoy the moment but don't forget that overall for the season it's disappointing. We need to demand more, recruit more and everything. There's so many things here. There's a lot of work that needs doing.

"I reminded the players of a good half and that the main thing was getting bodies in the box and having the belief to score a goal. We didn't progress too much in the second half because we found a magical moment then it was nervy after that.

"The players dealt with it in a different way. It was very difficult. I'm pleased that this side have been able to show a different way to win. They dug in. We have found wins. There's been a lot of good but there's a massive amount of work to be done.

"Yeah, Abdoulaye Doucoure has been terrific and a threat for us. We've been misfiring up front but he's been getting in the right areas and has popped up with a massive goal.

"I feel there has to be a real alignment. I don't think the club is ready to be thinking about the big stuff. We need to recruit well. All those things are not for this moment in time but I have it all up there."

  11. 'There is a lot to be done'published at 19:25 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Leeds 1-4 Tottenham

    Leeds United

Leeds manager Sam AllardyceImage source, Getty Images

Leeds boss Sam Allardyce, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "The 'too much' [to get out of trouble] was our fault, not the great skill of Tottenham Hotspur. In my short time, that is par for the course and also par for the course before I got here. It is a great shame. Our efforts today will go unnoticed. 20-21 attempts at goal and two on target. We created a lot today. We didn't have the quality Tottenham have to put the ball in the net. It should have easily resulted in a normal game, in two or three goals. Tottenham: 11 attempts, four goals. And then our gifting of goals. That is the biggest disappointment, along with the time we gifted them. Two minutes into each half. One when we fight back. We were on top at that time. The fans go home disappointed and show that and rightly so. If we had been more resilient, we could have had more in our favour.

"There is a lot to be done, even for the Championship. Goals to be scored and goalscorers to score them. That is an area. The squad is a little on the young side and lacks experience. That could be not as big a problem in the Championship, as those lads could make a big impact. The size of the squad is another factor over 46 games. Which way does the club want to go? It is a huge disappointment to me not to have gotten more results from the players. I can't blame them for not trying. They gave everything they have but you can't make those errors at this level.

"I'm disappoointed for the fans. They are very entitled to show their disapporoval. They filled the stadium to support and the lads should have given them more to get behind them."

    Martin OdegaardImage source, Getty Images

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard is out on the pitch, to a big cheer, with microphone in hand to reflect on the season:

"First of all we are all a little disappointed after leading for so long and being so close to winning the league.

"At the same time I think we have to look at all the good things we have done and the progress we have made, if we look back one year and see how far we have come.

"I am really proud of the team. We will look back at the good moments and we are ready to keep pushing.

"I'm so proud, it is such a big honour to represent this club and as captain as well, I feel so connected to this club, the supporters and everyone. I love it."

  13. 'We can't keep our best players'published at 19:21 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Brighton

    Brighton & Hove Albion

    BrightonImage source, Getty Images

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi: "There is disappointment today, it's always bad to lose a game but anyway the season was fantastic. I am sorry it is over but we will start stronger next season.

"It is incredible for us to be in the Europa League. But we deserved it.

"Villa deserved to qualify, the second part of the season was fantastic for them.

"Now we analyse the squad, we have to improve the squad and build a stronger squad with more players."

Will Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo stay? "They deserve to change level of team and competition, we have to be happy for them. We are Brighton and our policy is to help the young players to progress, we can't keep our best players. That is right, it is our mentality and we have to find more young players."

    Gary O'NeilImage source, Getty Images

Bournemouth manager Gary O'Neil speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought the lads were incredible. Maybe there were questions around integrity and what it means to the league and you can see the lads gave it everything. Proud of the players and we need to move it on.

"We came to a hostile place where the opposition were desperate. They scored a worldie and we didn't manage to. I'm disappointed with the result but very proud of the players. Anyone who needed us to come here and perform, will watch the game and know we did.

"It was a good test for us today. We have struggled a bit with physicality. You could see how desperate Everton were for the points so to be calm and control the ball was a very impressive performance.

"Neto means an awful lot to us as a group so we wanted to ensure the performance reflected what he has done for us this season. I think the players had that in mind and wanted to give a performance that represented what our captain stands for.

"The fact we have stayed up this year with the level of officiating that has gone against us this season is a miracle. I thought the same today. Anything that could have been given their way was. I hope next season we get our fair share.

"I can't wait [for next season]. You could see today some of the things we've started to put into place. Loads of things we have benefitted from by getting to 39 points so early. It's a big achievement. We're not 20th and I'm looking forward to working with the players next season."

  15. 'A bit too crazy'published at 19:18 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Southampton 4-4 Liverpool

    Liverpool

    Jurgen KloppImage source, Getty Images

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to BBC Sport: "Crazy game, a bit too crazy for my tastes to be honest. The start was really good, the finish was outstanding, in the middle it was not good enough, it's as easy as that.

"We gave Southampton the chance. We opened the door, they were obviously ready. I have to say, Southampton seem to be a really nice club, the whole atmosphere, you can sense why it's an important club.

"Southampton players wanted to enjoy their last occasion in the Premier League and we let them by silly things like passing in the wrong moment. Conceding four goals, self-created.

"Being 4-2 down and coming back like we did I liked a lot. Last matchday a lot of people might have thought that's it now. But the boys were really in it. 4-4, eight goals, for the people it was really entertaining. I enjoyed it not so much.

"When we start playing football in the right way, then we are a really good team. If anyone wants to talk about our team over the next six weeks, then I will not be hearing it."

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi to MOTD: "We played with honour, with respect for our fans, our shirt and ourselves.

"Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo both have been incredible people, incredible players, I am really sorry for them if they will leave but they deserve to play in another level. We have to find other big players, it will be very difficult to find players with the same quality and levels but it is our policy. We are not a big, big, big team and we improve and sell the best players.

"Football is my life and my life is football."

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Brighton

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Villa Park

Former England international Ashley Young, who turns 38 in July, is out of contract at Aston Villa in the summer, but has just told the fans he wants to stay at the club and play in Europe next season.

"Just look at it [the scenes at Villa Park], it's amazing," said the left-back. "We were in Europe the last time I was here and it's magnificent [to be back]. The manager came in and look at the table then and look at where we are now.

"For me [and his future] you have to ask the manager and the owner but I want to stay. I just want to thank all the fans for being here week in and week out.

"Since the manager has come in we've got further and further up the table and the fans have always been the 12th man. Hopefully we see them in Europe."

  18. 'We don't want it to become a thing'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Everton 1-0 Bournemouth

    Everton

Everton defender Conor Coady speaking to Sky Sports: "Relief. It's becoming a thing now and we don't want it to become a thing. It's been the hardest season in my career. There's a lot of relief.

"We weren't really aware until we came inside at half-time. We needed to stay in the game. There was loads of pressure. It's just an overwhelming relief. We need to not make this a common theme. This club has to rise and get better now.

"It's fantastic. It's a goal worthy of winning every game. He has been that driving force. Everyone wanted to play well. It's up to us now. It's been the hardest season ever. It's been so tough mentally and emotionally because we have to be better. This club has to be in the Premier League so we have to get better.

"People think we're robots and don't think about these things but it's been a hard season. It's important a line in the sand is drawn now because it's a big club and we have to improve."

    Everton

    Sean DycheImage source, Getty Images

Everton manager Sean Dyche speaking to Sky Sports: "It means a lot to me. I've just told the players we can't be in this state. A magic day but at the end of the day we shouldn't be in this shape. We have done well as staff and kept that belief. The mentality has been terrific.

"You are only a big club if you are doing big things. It is one and we need to get it back to being one.

"It's about the belief of the group. In the dying embers of the game we found the moments. We obviously want to do better but you still need to have that belief like we had today.

"I came in here and everyone said it was broken. We have changed some things and enough that kept us in the Premier League. It means a lot to me as a manager and for the players. We capitalised on a big moment and didn't make mistakes.

"You have to believe in the performance. We were getting good deliveries in the box so it was about staying calm and keep playing. They were nervous so we needed to see it through. That's when you need calmness and we lost that a bit but I understand that. They have freedom because they have stayed up so it's hard. We found a way to see it through and got enough points this season but there's a hell of a lot to be done here still, I can ensure you of that.

"It's a horrible game for all concerned at Everton but it's fantastic when you come through it and get things done.

"I came here as the man to do the job. I knew there was a heavy risk but I'm pleased we got it done. We have found ways of winning games and getting points so that's a good base to build on, but it does need building on."

  20. 'We played like a Chelsea team should'published at 19:09 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle

    Chelsea

    LampardImage source, Getty Images

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I think [we should have won]. We played like a Chelsea team should at home; more threat, more confident than we've been and we created chance. They did too but they are a good team; nothing to play for gave them freedom. You have to be careful not to get into a transitional game with Newcastle because they are a running team.

"It was nice [to say goodbye to the fans], I really appreciate them. Chelsea fans understand the tough position we were in when I came here. Although we haven't got the results we want this season, it is what it is. I'm not too nostalgic, I've got a great bond with the club and I'll be back many times.

"I'm really happy for Everton. I know there are people who care of that club; fair play, it is a huge football club and deserves to be in the Premier League.

"I'll have a break, it has been quite intense. I wasn't in that mode, I had to get in the mode. I've given it my all, we'll see what happens."
