  1. 'She's in good spirits' - Stanway on injured Walshpublished at 11:15 British Summer Time 1 August 2023

    China v England (12:00 BST)

England's Georgia Stanway says "best friend" Keira Walsh was "embarrassed to be stretchered off" in front of thousands of people in the win over Denmark as she gave an update on the midfielder's injury.

We're sat having a chat with Jill Scott trying to work out England's formation.

Sarina Wiegman has thrown everyone! We *think* it's 4-4-2 with Rachel Daly and Alessia Russo playing up front together.

Alex Greenwood could be at left-back again with Jess Carter in the middle of the defence.

But there's so many options. It could be a back three with Carter, Millie Bright and Alex Greenwood (then Daly and Lucy Bronze as wing-backs).

Lauren James and Lauren Hemp could both play in midfield in the number 10 and both can play on the right wing - so could Daly.

In short, who knows? I'm sticking with the 4-4-2 shout, which England have not played under Wiegman before.

  5. China ready for 'difficult' England challengepublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 1 August 2023

    China v England (12:00 BST)

China have not beaten European opposition at the Women's World Cup since a 2015 win against the Netherlands, but a two-goal victory over England would move them above Wiegman's side.

Chinese manager Shui Qingxia said: "This match is critical for both teams. To us it's maybe more difficult. We have been reviewing videos and will of course do our very best.

"From the Euros until now, the [England] team is rather stable. They are equally as good in attack as they are in defence.

"After the Euros they have had more young players on board, but they are still one of the best teams in Europe."

  7. England still 'strong enough' without Walsh, says Wiegmanpublished at 10:56 British Summer Time 1 August 2023

Manager Sarina Wiegman pledged England are "strong enough" to navigate their way through the Women's World Cup without midfielder Keira Walsh.

Barcelona's Walsh, 26, was taken off on a stretcher in the 1-0 win over Denmark after suffering a knee injury.

Wiegman would not confirm if Walsh will play again in the tournament as England prepared to face China in their final Group D match.

"We have a strong enough team. We know she's not available," said Wiegman. "We had a group of 23 so now we have a group of 22 [for the China game]. We have our solutions and we'll show that. We're here to move on.

"It's part of sport and it's not nice, but you have to adapt to the new situation and find a way."

The Lionesses will tackle China at the 13,557-capacity Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide (12:00 BST) knowing a point or better will see them progress as Group D winners.

England's starting XI without the injured Keira Walsh is a very different one to what we have been used to.

Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly are on the bench as Manchester United captain Katie Zelem and Chelsea defender Jess Carter come in.

It looks like Rachel Daly and Alessia Russo may be playing up front together in a 4-4-2 formation, though England could go three at the back.

England XI: Earps, Bronze, Greenwood, Bright, Carter, Stanway, Zelem, Hemp, Russo, James, Daly.

Subs: Hampton, Roebuck, Charles, Toone, Nobbs, Wubben-Moy, Morgan, Coombs, Kelly, England, Robinson.

Just the one change for China and a forced one as Zhang Rui is suspended after being sent off against Haiti and she is replaced by Wang Shuang. Celtic's Shen Mengyu is among the subs.

China XI: Zhu, Li, Shuang Wang, Wei Yao, Shanshan Wang, Yang, Lou, Chen, Lingwei Yao, Wu, Linyan Zhang.

Subs: Xu, Pan, Dou, Linlin Wang, Wu, Xin Zhang, Shen, Tang, Xiao, Gu, Gao.

Holders United States were the width of the post away from being eliminated from the Fifa Women's World Cup.

Portugal's Ana Capeta shot against the upright in the second minute of injury time at the end of the second half as the USA scraped through with a goalless draw to progress as Group E runners-up.

Netherlands hammered Vietnam 7-0, securing the biggest victory of the tournament, to move into the last 16 as Group E winners.

    Group DImage source, .
    Image caption,

The top two after today's matches go into the last 16, the bottom two are out

England, China and Denmark could all end up on six points, with goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head and even fair play record used as a way of ranking the sides.

It could also be a similar situation if England and Haiti both win as Denmark, China and Haiti would all have three points.

It's going to get very confusing if both China and Denmark win 1-0 as then England, China and Denmark will all have exactly identical records. Therefore it would then go to the nations' fair play records. So all the managers today will be telling their players to not talk themselves into a booking and definitely don't get sent off.

This is how the fair play records are scored...

    • Yellow card - minus 1 point
    • Indirect red card (as a result of two yellow cards) - minus 3 points
    • Direct red card - minus 4 points
    • Yellow card and a direct red card - minus 5 points.

Denmark have had one player booked so far, England two, with China having one player sent off for a straight red card offence. If the fair play records end on the same points, we would then have the absolutely farcical situation of drawing lots to see who advances and who goes out.

Let's hope we don't get down to that.

July 31, 2022 will always be a special day in English football history - the day the Lionesses became European champions.

August 1, 2023 may well be a decent day too with England looking to secure their place in the knockout stages of the Fifa Women's World Cup.

It's two wins out of two with no goals conceded so far. A point against China will be enough to take Sarina Wiegman's side through as group winners.
