An England striker is off the mark at this World Cup! There's been two 1-0 wins so far for England with midfielders Georgia Stanway and Lauren James bagging the goals so far. That will be a huge confidence boost for England's main striker.

  13. Rachel's prediction - 'England will get three points'published at 11:58 British Summer Time 1 August 2023

    China v England (12:00 BST)

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
    Ex-England goalkeeper on BBC TV

This has been the group of 1-0 wins so far so I'm backing that trend to continue.

England only need one point, but I think they will get all three, and then who joins them could come down to fair play points, and be decided by the number of yellow cards each team has received.

We want the Lionesses to stay clear of all that, and I'm confident they'll get the job done, although China are capable of making things difficult for England: 0-1.

  14. 'We're going to get tested'published at 11:57 British Summer Time 1 August 2023

    China v England (12:00 BST)

    Emma Sanders
    BBC Sport at Hindmarsh Stadium

Monday marked a year to the day since England won their first women's major trophy, triumphing at Euro 2022 on home soil, but only six of the unchanged starting XI in that tournament are available at present.

Injuries to key players including captain Leah Williamson, top scorer Beth Mead, playmaker Fran Kirby and instrumental midfielder Walsh, as well as striker Ellen White's retirement, have complicated England's challenge of winning a first Women's World Cup.

They have still lost just once in 34 matches under manager Wiegman but were tested in their victories against lower-ranked Haiti and Denmark.

However, Rachel Daly says the squad's resilience is "special". The 31-year-old Aston Villa player typifies it, having been selected as a striker but lined up at left-back last time out, ready to put in a shift in either role.

"There's going to be ups and downs. There's going be tough moments - that's the nature of a World Cup tournament," said Daly.

"Teams around us are getting better and better. It's great for the game to see other teams rising and doing so well.

"We've played two really difficult opponents so we're going to get tested. That's how we deal with it - with the resilience."

  15. Can England make it 16 scoring World Cup matches in a row?published at 11:56 British Summer Time 1 August 2023

    China v England (12:00 BST)

England have scored in each of their last 15 matches at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, netting 25 goals across these games stretching back to 2015.

Should they find the net in this game, they would be the first team to score in 16 consecutive matches in the competition.

Pete Bailey moved from Isleworth to Adelaide 20 years ago but still has a London accent, with an Aussie twang to it.

He runs Adelaide Jags, a women's only soccer club and has brought his daughter Georgina to the match.

"This tournament has been great for women's football in Australia. I hope it does what the Euros did for England," he tells me.

"The players have been able to show off what they can do and showcase their skillsets and younger girls have idols to look up to."

Georgina was born and bred in Australia but she's very much an England fan. Her favourite player is Lucy Bronze and she's predicting a 4-2 win for England. Pete is going for 2-1.

  17. No thoughts of a drawpublished at 11:54 British Summer Time 1 August 2023

    China v England (12:00 BST)

    England

England are appearing at a World Cup for a sixth time and have never gone out in the group stage, reaching the semi-finals in 2015 and 2019.

Those narrow wins over Haiti and Denmark have given them six points, but they may still need another point to guarantee progression.

However, manager Sarina Wiegman has dismissed any suggestion England would play for a draw and said: "We go into every game trying to win - and that's what we'll try to do.

"We have analysed China. They're very well organised. They play a possession game but can also play a direct style."

  18. 'Hemp is a very skilful player'published at 11:53 British Summer Time 1 August 2023

    China v England (12:00 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Lastly from ex-England player Rachel Yankey: "I really like Lauren Hemp and what she creates. I think if you’re getting down the wing she’s a very skilful player she got good crossing ability and creates a lot of assists as well as Chloe Kelly on the other side.

"One thing that takes Lauren James ahead of everyone slightly is her self belief. You really need that in a major tournament like this. You need your players to be confident, to be believing that at any opportunity, you’re going to score."

Millie Bright and Jess Carter are warming up together again so it looks like they will be a centre-back pairing again as they were in the opening victory over Haiti. If England do go with a back three, they haven't shown signs of it in the warm-up.

  20. Rachel's prediction - 'Maybe this is when Haiti's luck turns'published at 11:53 British Summer Time 1 August 2023

    Haiti v Denmark (12:00 BST)

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
    Ex-England goalkeeper on BBC TV

Haiti can feel hard done by to have been beaten in both of their games, but you know they will go for it again against Denmark and maybe this is when their luck turns.

If England beat China it opens the door for Haiti to get out of Group D with a win, although it might come down to fair play points. It is going to be so close that I can see a conundrum like that happening at the end of it: 1-0.
