  1. 'Nigeria look like the higher ranked side'published at 10:38 British Summer Time 7 August 2023

    England 0-0 Nigeria

    Karen Bardsley
Former England and Manchester City goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

    How the tables have turned.

This Nigeria team look like the higher ranked side right now.

Certainly doesn't help that England are down to 10 players, and they don't seem to have much of an attacking outlet aside from Bronze driving down the right.

England have dodged a bullet there.

A really poor attempt on goal there from Alozie.

    Chance!

Nigeria's Michelle Alozie should do a lot better. She's found in plenty of space on the left in the box but she snatches at it, slicing the ball wide.

    England 0-0 Nigeria

England get the ball at the right end of the pitch as far as they are concerned. But the minutes are catching up with them. It won't help to have a player less. Nigeria have been quicker to the ball throughout and even more so now.

We've seen in the first few minutes here how this is going to go.

Nigeria pressing, England dug in desperately.

Perhaps slightly more on that challenge from Bronze compared to the one overturned on Daly in the first half.

I guess if you're comparing the overturned VAR decision, they're both contact and no penalty.

    England 0-0 Nigeria

Wow. Lucy Bronze takes an almighty risk with a barge into the back of Michelle Alozie that leaves the Nigeria player down in the box.

It's not seen as a penalty by the ref on the field and VAR seems happy with that.

Hearts in mouths for a moment.

Nigeria are going to throw everything they have at England here now. With the extra player, they won't want to let the Lionesses off the hook and risk a shootout.

    England 0-0 Nigeria

    Anita Asante
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

    I'm really disappointed.

One act has kind of tarnished all the good work that Lauren James has done up until this point.

She is a superstar and hopefully she will grow from this experience.

Her team now have lost a player who has the ability to turn a game on its head.

    It's the last 16 of the World Cup. It's extra-time. It's 11 v 10. It's excruciating.

The lack of subs surprised me for England. They had to get the momentum back in this game.

I think England are lucky to have reached extra-time. Now they have to find a strategy with 10 players.

  15. 'I'm in disbelief'published at 10:29 British Summer Time 7 August 2023

    FT: England 0-0 Nigeria

    Karen Bardsley
Former England and Manchester City goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

I'm in a bit of disbelief here. I can't really believe what I've seen.

How well Nigeria have done and the fact that England's best attacking spell of the match came in second half stoppage time.

It's very strange. It will be interesting to see what happens.

It's disappointing, she was frustrated during the game. There was no need for it.

This will galvanise England, they need to come together now.

    Emma Sanders

It may now be a blessing that England have only used one substitution so far. They have another 30 minutes to play with 10 players now.

Sarina Wiegman is extremely animated in the team huddle. She's got lots to say and everyone's eyes are fixated on her.

That is completely inexcusable from Lauren James. From being England's best player in the tournament so far to potentially being the reason we are knocked out due to one completely brain dead decision.

    Nick

People comparing that to Beckham or Rooney. It’s equally as petulant as their’s were, the difference is there wasn’t VAR then and more often that not you got away with it. Simply ridiculous to anything like that in the modern game!

    Sam

By the way, it won't be James that's cost England the game and WC, though it won't have helped.. as the rest of the team have to pull their weight, which many have not been doing! Don't y'all go doing the pointing the finger thing, when many are lacking, including Sarina!

A game that has had everything but a goal. Unfortunately for England, that also includes a red card for their star of the tournament so far - Lauren James.

The Lionesses are going to have to dig deeper than at any point in Sarina Wiegman's time in charge to keep their World Cup dream alive.

    Extra-time on the way.
