So, what do we make of that England fans?

Of course, the Lionesses will have to overcome Australia in their semi-final before they can think about the prospect of a final against Spain.

But will they be happy with that result? Hit the thumbs.

Four times Sweden have found themselves in this position many times.

In their five World Cup semi-finals only one has resulted in the final and they lost that to the USA in 2003.

Once again, they find themselves in Saturday's third-place play-off.

Always the bridesmaid, springs to mind.

Sweden's exit means we will have a completely fresh line-up in the World Cup final for the first time since the inaugural tournament in 1991.

One of those teams could be England.

  6. Historic moment for Spainpublished at 11:29 British Summer Time 15 August 2023

    FT: Spain 2-1 Sweden

Spain have reached the final of the Women’s World Cup for the first time; prior to this edition, they had won just one of their seven games at the tournament (D2 L4).

Spain’s Salma Paralluelo, aged 19, became the second teenager to score in a Women’s World Cup semi-final, after Kara Lang did so at the age of 16 for Canada in 2003, also against Sweden.

These scenes are phenomenal. To think that Spain left so many players at home, so many of their first team players at home. It's crazy.

It's surprising because with all of what's gone on Spain have shown a togetherness here that they have never ever shown in tournament football before.

  9. 'Incredible talent factory'published at 11:18 British Summer Time 15 August 2023

    FT: Spain 2-1 Sweden

    Jonas Eidevall
    Arsenal manager on BBC One

We have a nation here in Spain that in the last decade have produced U19 Euros Winners, U20 World Cup winners over and over again.

It is incredible really when you see the talent factory that Spanish football is.

Only 93 seconds separated Sweden equalising in the 88th minute through Rebecka Blomqvist and Spain scoring the winner in the 89th minute courtesy of Olga Carmona.

    FT: Spain 2-1 Sweden

    Fara Williams
Former England midfielder on BBC One

I find it fascinating that Spain as a nation are divided about getting to a World Cup final.

Some people were not wanting them to get there because of all the issues behind the scenes between some of the players and the coach Jorge Vilda.

    Great scenes in New Zealand.

Despite all their problems and all the controversy, the togetherness they have shown here has been second to none and the celebrations at Eden Park say it all.

Incredibly, Spain had never won a knockout game at a World Cup before this.

  13. 'It only takes one moment'published at 11:06 British Summer Time 15 August 2023

    FT: Spain 2-1 Sweden

    Jonas Eidevall
    Arsenal manager on BBC One

A wise man once said, 'The moment you are most vulnerable is when you have just scored.'

It only takes one second to switch off, they concede a corner and Olga Carmona was given too much time to take the shot.

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

This is huge. Of course there is all the stuff going on off the pitch but they're professional players with a professional attitude and at the end of the day, they themselves want to get to a World Cup final and they want success.

Spain were the better team and they had the better chances.

Sweden will be gutted and frustrated in the way that second goal when in in the way they switched off but Spain are through to a World Cup final.

You have to say as well, credit to these Spain players.

The past year has been a turbulent one for them, to say the least. Last year there were calls from the players for Spain manager Jorge Vilda to be sacked.

Many players boycotted the team and some senior players have still refused to be part of this squad in protest.

Some returned despite the controversy and here they are, in a World Cup final.

  17. 'Heartbreaking for Sweden'published at 11:00 British Summer Time 15 August 2023

    FT: Spain 2-1 Sweden

    Fara Williams
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Sweden have been to a few semi-finals and they have fallen at this hurdle again.

For some players in the squad it will have been their last tournament, so it is devastating. A horrible stage to go out.

I thought the game was there for them, I really did. I thought their game plan was suited to counteract what Spain try to do.

In the end they didn't have the final third quality, and that is what they will look back on and point to.

  18. 'Exciting for Spain'published at 10:58 British Summer Time 15 August 2023

    FT: Spain 2-1 Sweden

    Gilly Flaherty
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's heart breaking for Sweden because in the last five tournaments, they've got to the semi-finals. They are still one step away, they're missing out again this year.

With Spain, you're looking at the overall performance. They've been the better team, they had more chances. It will be exciting for them, their first World Cup final.

Agony and ecstasy as the Spain players run and embrace each other, tears of joy, huddles and cheers.

Devastating for Sweden, though. Fridolina Rolfo sits on the grass in tears, consoled by Barcelona team mate Mariona Caldentey.

Absolutely brilliant from a Spanish perspective.

Salma Paralluelo making the impact and then Carmona with the winner.

They have put aside off-field issues to get to their first World Cup final.
