Former Arsenal player Tony Adams, speaking on Sky Sports:

"Arsenal have just run out of resources. A few players have fallen out of form and they didn't have the back-up available.

"They have done brilliantly. Bukayo Saka is probably the young player of the season. It's just a shame that it all fell apart at the end. Manchester City are an unbelievable team.

"It's about players this game. When you have the resources, the back-ups, you're only as good as those people that can come in. When you have the resources, you win titles."

  4. Can anyone stop Pep Guardiola's Premier League winners?published at 21:11 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

Man City win the Premier League

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Manchester City's fifth Premier League title in six years and the manner in which it was achieved must send a sense of dread through those seeking ways to unseat Pep Guardiola's magnificent champions.

City retained their crown as Nottingham Forest beat Arsenal on Saturday and it will be ominous for any rivals looking for signs of a reduction in their ravenous appetite for success.

Indeed, City's desire to inflict and sustain their supremacy on those they have chased down and steamrollered appears to be sharpening, rather than offering any hints familiarity with silverware is breeding contempt.

City are the first team to win the Premier League for three seasons in succession since Manchester United in 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09.

They are also on course to emulate United's historic feat of 1999 and become only the second English side to secure the title then also win the FA Cup and Champions League.

Guardiola's genius has built a dynasty that will only get stronger. This is a machine without an obvious weakness assembled by one of the greatest managerial figures the game has known.

Former Brighton striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Yes they are [better than the Manchester United treble-winning team of 1999]. And I say that reluctantly as I was United fan as a kid that generation I looked up to and it seems that feat would never be repeated.

But this City team are deadly. They beat people and move on. They are an emotionless winning machine. Nothing bothers them.

I heard an interview with Noel Gallagher, he bounced into the dressing room after the Real Madrid game and said it was dead. He was like ‘lads you’re in the Champions League final’ but they said ’yeah but Noel we have won nothing yet’. They were thinking what’s next, let’s win the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League. That’s when they will put their feet up and enjoy themselves when they have proved that they are what most people think they are and that’s one of the best club sides we have ever seen.

They are just so adaptable, they go from a four to a three into a two then the speed of Kyle Walker and how good he has been. They are just incredible. It is coming to that point where you are lost for words.

It was Arsenal’s title but City just ticked wins off. I just think at the business end of the season they slip it into third and left everyone for dead and I expect them to win the treble.

Man City win the Premier League

    Nedum Onuoha
Former Manchester City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Man City have changed as the season progressed. City weren't scoring enough and they were conceding too many goals.

But, as things are panning out now, they're in with a chance of having the best defensive record in the division and you are seeing the change of John Stones going into midfield. He hasn't played in midfield for the previous seven years he has been under Pep Guardiola as manager and all of a sudden that's the right thing to do.

The players are all playing exceptionally well, everyone has done their bit throughout the season for them. They are just relentless.

Every game they treat with the utmost respect whether they are playing top of the table or bottom of the table and that's ultimately why when the pressure was on for Arsenal, they weren't able to get across the line but for Man City they've been there, they've done it and like we saw against Real Madrid in the week they've done it in a way that can seem completely unplayable.

It all boils down to Guardiola, the side that he has put together. Yes he has financial backing…

I expected a reaction from Real [Madrid - in Champions League semi], they have had some sort of mystical hold over the competition in recent years, but City were on a different level.

Do we have them as one of the top club sides ever? If they add this Champions League and possibly this treble then they are in the question alongside the likes of Barcelona.

    Nedum Onuoha
Former Manchester City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I genuinely believe that knowing the pressure of winning the league title is gone, they can celebrate a little today but it's business for them.

The manager himself will know that he'll need to see certain things from the players to know that they are fit, sharp and ready heading into the final stretch of the season where they could come away with the Treble.

But the work they have put in for the league has been astonishing. They struggled a little bit to a certain extent after winning the World Cup but what a moment it could be for them and going to the Etihad tomorrow from a fan perspective is going to be a party atmosphere and that's a real privilege to feel that and know that at the end of the game they'll be lifting the trophy.

They are incredible, even unsung heroes like John Stones, be it at right-back, centre-back or in midfield.

De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Mahrez. There are star men all over the pitch, Jack Grealish is showing his quality and the reason they bought him, 12 months ago was getting a bit of stick but now he is showing what he is capable of. He is starting the big games now.

Haaland 52 goals, he’s not doing too bad, there’s no weakness, even going back to the keeper, Ederson making brilliant saves in key moments.

    I can’t see a weakness.

  12. 'They've run out of steam'published at 20:48 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

Man City win the Premier League

Former Arsenal captain Tony Adams, speaking to Sky Sports about why the Gunners let their lead slip: "I would have gone for a little more rotation. We’ve depended on Martinelli and Saka for most of the season. They could have given Emile Smith Rowe a bit more air time, just to give them a little bit of a break.

"I’ve been waiting for the errors to come – they weren’t coming. There was a stable back four, the goalkeeper was looking confident, the midfield balance was perfect. I think it’s been lost two, three months ago. I think they’ve run out of steam.

"Arteta has got the most he possibly could out of that group of players. That’s all you can ask from a coach."

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on Match of the Day: "I am incapable of thinking about it right now. We have to congratulate City.

"It has been an incredible journey for us over 10 months competing with City, being ahead of them for so long. We were so eager to go for something in sport and we didn't reach it.

"We have learned huge lessons. We have transformed a lot at this club, we have made huge steps but the icing on the cake is to win a championship and we fell short.

"It has been difficult in the last few weeks. We need the team with everyone at their best in April and May and that hasn't happened.

"It is painful today, it will be tomorrow but we have to give our fans the performance they deserve next week."

Man City win the Premier League

Jamie Carragher, speaking to Sky Sports about Arsenal's form since the turn of the year: "Arsenal’s first 11 is not a million miles away from Manchester City. They play a similar style, but you can’t play your best players all the time. Kevin de Bruyne doesn’t play every game [for Man City].

"The second half of the season has been a massive drop-off. They had 50 points at the halfway mark. You know you have to get to 90 points to win the title. Arsenal could maybe end up with 84. Even though you can say they’ve done all they can, it hasn’t really been enough."

Man City win the Premier League

Jamie Carragher speaking on Sky Sports, on whether he believes Manchester City will go on to win the Treble: "I think they will. They will be big favourites against Inter Milan and Manchester United. It feels like almost every season they are in with a shout.

"The standards have been raised so high by Pep Guardiola. With a different manager they wouldn't be reaching these heights and for me he makes the biggest difference.

"Will the other clubs have any belief at all that they can challenge Manchester City? At the moment they are on a completely different level.

"Right now Phil Foden can't get in the team, they're bringing in that level of player. That's the difference between them and Arsenal."
