Fikayo Tomori is arguably the best English centre back playing at the moment and yet never even gets a sniff of an England squad despite stand out performances for Milan. What has the bloke done wrong to be this far down the pecking order? Incredible.

  8. 'This sport has a structural problem'published at 16:21 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Jonas Baer-Hoffmann, general secretary of players’ group Fifpro, has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about the racist abuse Vinicius Jr has received:

"It's been deeply, deeply frustrating to see the events of the last few months. How he has been singled out, the degree and quantity of the abuse. The lack of response in a really impactful manner just describes the problem that football still has.

"We look at this as a global organisation in many countries, on many continents and there is a structural problem that this sport has in tackling this effectively.

"He is right now an unbelievable target of abuse and it's frustrating that it takes him speaking up to this degree, him taking all this abuse for people to react in a manner that is now slowly starting. It feels that the response is more to the public attention than the crimes that are being committed."

Brazil's mainstream media expressed approval for the strong public support shown for Brazilian player Vinicius Jr by President Lula and his government after the Real Madrid winger suffered racist chants.

Leading newspaper O Globo reported that Lula - who had been quick to denounce the chants against Vinicius Jr while speaking on Sunday from Japan where he had attended a G7 summit - was seeking a direct telephone conversation with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to discuss the incident involving the player.

Brazilian media outlets reported prominently that Brazil's foreign ministry had spoken by phone on Monday to Spain's ambassador, Mar Fernandez-Palacios, to express a "diplomatic gesture of repudiation" over the "racist acts" against Vinicius Jr.

Already Brazil's Minister of State for Human Rights, Silvio Almeida, had sharply criticised the La Liga leadership, tweeting that "the posture of the Spanish authorities and of the entities that run the game is criminal".

"It shows undeniable connivance with racism," Almeida added.

  10. 'Penalising fans who were not involved is unfair'published at 16:09 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

Valencia added in their statement, in which they outlined their intention to appeal the sanctions lodged against them for the racist abuse Vinicius Jr suffered, why they felt the punishment was "unfair":

"We consider that penalising and depriving all the fans who were not involved in these unfortunate incidents from seeing their team is a totally disproportionate, unfair and unprecedented measure against which we will fight.

"The fight against racism requires the real commitment of all the parties involved without using it as a pretext to incur serious injustices.

"Valencia CF will appeal to the last instance the closure of the stand, a sanction that it considers totally unfair and one more offence in the latest disciplinary decisions that have been taken against the club. Valencia CF asks for the utmost respect and rigour for our institution and fans."

  11. Valencia to appeal against sanctionspublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

Valencia will appeal against their five-game partial stadium closure and 45,000 euros (£39,000) fine following the racist abuse suffered by Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr.

The five-match closure of the Mestalla Stadium's south stand has been labelled "unfair and disproportionate" by the La Liga club, who reaffirmed their dedication to tackling racism in football.

In a statement, they said: "Valencia CF wishes to show its total disagreement and indignation at the unfair and disproportionate penalty imposed by the competition committee on the club with the closure of the stand for five games.

"Valencia CF wants to publicly denounce that in this resolution of the RFEFcompetition committee they show evidence that contradicts what the national police and La Liga say.

"In addition, this sanction is based on evidence that the club has not been able to see and without giving us a hearing.

"Valencia CF has condemned, condemns and will condemn in the most energetic way any act of racism or violence. These behaviours have no place in football or in society and we will continue to act in the most forceful way to eradicate this scourge.

"For this reason, Valencia CF is collaborating from the first minute with the police and all relevant authorities to clarify the events that occurred last Sunday.

"In addition, it has applied the maximum possible sanction with the expulsion for life from our stadium to the fans that the police have identified for their racist behaviour."
