Gareth Southgate on whether Ivan Toney has a chance of making Euro 2024: "Without a doubt. It's not ideal because he is going to miss a large chunk of the season and we don't know physically after that period out, how he is going to adapt and play.

Eberechi Eze has completed more take-ons than any other player in the Premier League this season.

The winger has beaten an opponent 71 times so far this term, contributing 10 goals and four assists. He has also created 55 chances for his Crystal Palace team-mates.

Southgate issued high praise for the 24-year-old's skills and pace in his news conference this afternoon, following Eze's first-ever call-up to the England squad.

England manager Gareth Southgate has said the door will remain open for Ivan Toney to return after he has competed his eight-month ban for breaching betting rules:

"He knows we picked him because we felt until there was a charge, he should be allowed to play.

"When he comes back, if he plays well, then we'll pick him.

"I think he'll have additional motivation through what he's experiencing and he's a resilient guy with great character and we are here to support him."

"I don't think the rest of the world will be doing that this summer (resting players) and we've played North Macedonia at home twice and never beaten them. So I think we could easily fall into the trap - to be a top team, to be European champions we need to nail the fixtures, like we did in March, and you've got to make sure you nail the more complicated ones because everybody has the view (that they are easy).

"I think it's a good test of commitment, I think it's a good test of togetherness. I think this group don't want to let each other down. We want to keep progressing as a team. We have five opportunities to work together before the European Championships, if we can qualify, and we played so well in March that we need to make sure that we back that up and are not needing to go to North Macedonia at the end of the (qualifiers) needing to get through.

"I think this group of players has enough humility to recognise that."

Unai Emery has done a brilliant job at Aston Villa, and the same with [Roberto de Zerbi at] Brighton. Brighton have been exceptional and Lewis Dunk and Levi Colwill have been a big part of that.

"(Dunk has) shown great composure with the ball. He is asked to defend very often in one-v-one situations and he thoroughly deserves his call."

"What bothers me is that we've got to look after people and he's injured at the moment. What does he do about getting fit?

"I think we could debate about walking off [the pitch] or not. It's a disgusting situation. I think it's so bad that actually it is going to force change. It has taken a central story, not only in Europe but around the world, and it will force change.

"It is another example of what we are dealing with and another example of people burying their heads in the sand.

"We've been in a similar situation and I think [Real Madrid manager] Carlo Ancelotti dealt with it really well.

"There is a lot to take from it, it looks as though action has taken. Hopefully it is a story that doesn't just disappear in 24-48 hours without anything being done."
