  1. Badiashile faces months outpublished at 15:01 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

Man Utd v Chelsea, Thurs 20:00 BST

    Chelsea

Frank Lampard on defender Benoit Badiashile's injury: "It is a big blow for him; he's impressed when he's played. The injury is unfortunate and complex, on his hamstring; we are probably talking months rather than weeks.

"I hope the timing means he is not missing games over the summer and he comes back stronger."

Some people are forgetting the U21s have Euro Championship this summer. Some players, like Ramsey, will be better off getting tournament experience instead of playing these qualifiers.

    England

    Ivan ToneyImage source, Getty Images

Gareth Southgate on whether Ivan Toney has a chance of making Euro 2024: "Without a doubt. It's not ideal because he is going to miss a large chunk of the season and we don't know physically after that period out, how he is going to adapt and play.

"It's possible for him. There would still be time and he's really impressed us with the way he's played. I like his personality, I like his belief and the way he goes about his job."

  4. Eze's impactpublished at 14:50 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

Eberechi Eze has completed more take-ons than any other player in the Premier League this season.

The winger has beaten an opponent 71 times so far this term, contributing 10 goals and four assists. He has also created 55 chances for his Crystal Palace team-mates.

Southgate issued high praise for the 24-year-old's skills and pace in his news conference this afternoon, following Eze's first-ever call-up to the England squad.

I really struggle to understand how Gallagher and Maguire get a call up ahead of Ramsey and Konsa. Ramsey has been outstanding for Villa this season. Konsa and Mings are part of the team that has conceded less goals than any other since January. Baffling.

  6. 'There is a pathway here for young players'published at 14:44 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate speaking about England's Under-21s at his press conference after announcing his squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers: "I don't think they're quite ready to be ahead of the players we picked but there is a good chance that if we had problems, they're the next ones in.

"Myself and Steve Holland will go to at least a part of that tournament (Under-21s Euros) to watch them, I think that's important. We have players there that we like. I think it's important. They can see from the decisions we've made that there's a pathway here. We are excited about some of those players as well, definitely."

  7. 'We have to show there is something to play for'published at 14:41 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

Man Utd v Chelsea, Thurs 20:00 BST

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, speaking earlier before his side face Manchester United tomorrow, was asked about the opposition being on the brink of Champions League qualification: "My approach will be the same as against Man City, although they won the league the night before.

"People think we've got nothing on the game; the players have to show that there is, in terms of their personal and collective approach."

Sulaimon: How does Conor Gallagher, Kalvin Phillips and Harry Maguire make the squad. Eberechi Eze and Callum Wilson get a deserved call up.

Stephen: It's not a slam dunk, it's an Eze Dunk naming this England squad

  9. 'We'll pick him if he plays well on return'published at 14:33 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate has said the door will remain open for Ivan Toney to return after he has competed his eight-month ban for breaching betting rules:

"He knows we picked him because we felt until there was a charge, he should be allowed to play.

"When he comes back, if he plays well, then we'll pick him.

"I think he'll have additional motivation through what he's experiencing and he's a resilient guy with great character and we are here to support him."

  10. 'These players have the humility to approach it in the right way'published at 14:31 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

    England

    Gareth SouthgateImage source, Getty Images

England manager Gareth Southgate speaking at his news conference after announcing his squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers:

"I don't think the rest of the world will be doing that this summer (resting players) and we've played North Macedonia at home twice and never beaten them. So I think we could easily fall into the trap - to be a top team, to be European champions we need to nail the fixtures, like we did in March, and you've got to make sure you nail the more complicated ones because everybody has the view (that they are easy).

"I think it's a good test of commitment, I think it's a good test of togetherness. I think this group don't want to let each other down. We want to keep progressing as a team. We have five opportunities to work together before the European Championships, if we can qualify, and we played so well in March that we need to make sure that we back that up and are not needing to go to North Macedonia at the end of the (qualifiers) needing to get through.

"I think this group of players has enough humility to recognise that."

  11. 'Dunk deserves his call-up'published at 14:29 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate speaking about Brighton defender Lewis Dunk and Aston Villa central defender Tyrone Mings at his news conference after announcing his squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers:

"Yeah absolutely (it was too hard to ignore them). Both clubs (Brighton and Aston Villa) have been excellent. Unai Emery has done a brilliant job at Aston Villa, and the same with [Roberto de Zerbi at] Brighton. Brighton have been exceptional and Lewis Dunk and Levi Colwill have been a big part of that.

"(Dunk has) shown great composure with the ball. He is asked to defend very often in one-v-one situations and he thoroughly deserves his call."

  12. 'How do we give him some structure?' - Southgate on Toneypublished at 14:25 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on Brentford striker Ivan Toney's eight-month ban:

"What bothers me is that we've got to look after people and he's injured at the moment. What does he do about getting fit?

"How do we give him some structure over the next few months so he can develop himself or be a better person at the end of it or have experiences he might not experience?

"I don't like the idea that we just leave somebody that they are not allowed to be part of the football community. I don't think that's how we should work."

  13. 'The Vinicius Jr incident is disgusting'published at 14:24 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate was asked at his news conference about the racial abuse suffered by Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr during Real's recent 1-0 loss against Valencia.

"I think we could debate about walking off [the pitch] or not. It's a disgusting situation. I think it's so bad that actually it is going to force change. It has taken a central story, not only in Europe but around the world, and it will force change.

"It is another example of what we are dealing with and another example of people burying their heads in the sand.

"We've been in a similar situation and I think [Real Madrid manager] Carlo Ancelotti dealt with it really well.

"There is a lot to take from it, it looks as though action has taken. Hopefully it is a story that doesn't just disappear in 24-48 hours without anything being done."

  14. Southgate speaks to Toneypublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate says he has spoken to Ivan Toney after the Brentford striker was given an eight-month ban from football for breaching betting rules:

"I have spoken with him. I don't know if that's allowed, by the way. If it isn't, they can ban me and not add to his.

"I think he recognised and accepted the punishment."

  15. 'Raheem is a top-level player'published at 14:17 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

Man Utd v Chelsea, Thurs 20:00 BST

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard on Raheem Sterling's England omission: "I don't know what the conversations were between Raheem and Gareth. All I do know is he is a top level player. He has played for England for a long time.

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate speaking about Trent Alexander-Arnold at his press conference after announcing his squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers: "He's a super footballer and he's playing in a slightly different role.

"He has always been in advanced areas with the ball, he is just a bit more central now. It is interesting for us and an option and something I have spoken to him about in recent weeks. We are looking forward to working with Trent."

  17. 'We've watched Eze for a long time'published at 14:13 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate speaking about Eberechi Eze at his press conference after announcing his squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers: "We've liked him for a long time. He was very unfortunate just before the Euros. We were going to call him into a prep camp and he got an injury.

"He has finished the season very strongly, he can play in a couple of positions across that front line. He has high quality and bursts of speed to go past players with those dribbling skills."

  18. 'Sterling wasn't really in consideration'published at 14:10 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

    England

    Raheem SterlingImage source, Getty Images

England manager Gareth Southgate speaking about Raheem Sterling at his press conference after announcing his squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers: "I spoke with him a week or so ago. A general catch-up.

"He is not happy with his condition physically, carrying a hamstring problem. He wasn't really in consideration.

"He doesn't think he is operating at the level he needs."

  19. 'We have picked a strong squad'published at 14:08 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate speaking at his news conference after announcing his squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers: "It (the short time between the season's end and the qualifiers) hasn't influenced selections at all. It is a difficult season for clubs, the players and us.

"We are always mindful of the welfare of the players and we have to allow players time to recuperate but not to de-condition physically.

"Like every other country we have important qualification matches on our way to Germany.

"We have picked a strong squad and the players always enjoy coming here. I think we will manage it as well as we can."

  20. 'Strongest squad'published at 14:06 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

"We have picked the strongest squad we can," says England boss Gareth Southgate.

    Full quotes to come.
