  1. Lopetegui’s strong impact at Wolvespublished at 09:24 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

Former Spain and Real Madrid boss Lopetegui led Wolves comfortably clear of the Premier League's relegation places following his appointment in November, when the club was bottom of the league.

They are only the fourth side in the Premier League era to stay up after being bottom on Christmas Day and secured their top-flight status with three games remaining.

Lopetegui has won nine of his 22 league games in charge and the club are 13th before the final match of the season.

However, the Spaniard said he had been made aware of issues he "didn't know before" in a meeting with chairman Jeff Shi.

Premier League rules mean clubs can only accumulate losses of £105m over a three-year period.

In their last financial results Wolves posted a £46.1m loss, before adding 10 senior players this season - plus two more on loan - suggesting further losses on their next accounts.

  2. Lopetegui‘s Wolves future in doubt - Balaguepublished at 09:14 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui's future "is in doubt" because of the club's financial situation, says Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague.

Lopetegui, 56, said last week that it would be "difficult to compete" in the Premier League without investment.

The Spaniard added he had only recently been made aware of the club's Financial Fair Play (FFP) "problems".

"Talks this week between the club and Lopetegui will give us a clearer picture," Balague said.

"With the club unable to get the signings or investment they promised him and instead having to sell to keep up with FFP, his future is in doubt even though he is under contract."

  3. 'There needs to be change'published at 09:08 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Troy Townsend says that both he and Kick It Out want there to be change at the highest level, to deal with racism in football: "For me, I don’t think they want to abandon games so the protocol [that Fifa sets out] then becomes a nonsense. It is Fifa who should be telling every federation, every organisation, every league if that is the case. To follow their protocol, to follow the officials and make sure that its understood.

"I wouldn’t like to be on the field when you give people free opportunities to abuse me based on the colour of my skin and then stop short of applying the appropriate action as per the letter of the law. There needs to be a review there as far as I'm concerned, and we as an organisation are concerned.

"You've got to start asking the people who have been impacted the most if it's fit for purpose. As we saw with the shocking incidents on Sunday, that wasn't appropriate for Vinicius Jr and wouldn’t have been appropriate for his team-mates. But it was allowed to happen and now we are trying to flag it again as the right way to deal with racism. I'm sorry, but it's not.

"There needs to be an urgent review from Fifa in what that does, how it's implemented and [whether] it protects the players on the field of play."

  4. 'It's deeper than just the president'published at 09:01 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Troy Townsend, of anti-discrimination group, Kick It out, spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live earlier about the racism Vinicius Jr has suffered:

"He is a young man who just wants to walk onto the field of play and show his talent. It wasn't only the La Liga president. It was the co-commentators who brushed off the experience that Vinicius has had and said 'well, he does rile the crowd up a bit.'

"It was a journalist in the press conference with Carlo Ancelotti saying that sometimes he gets his words mixed up and understanding mixed up. All those things go together to say the way that these incidents have been dealt with in the past have not been great."

  5. 'Why would you do that?'published at 08:56 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Troy Townsend, of anti-discrimination group Kick It Out, has criticised the way La Liga president Javier Tebas responded to the racism aimed at Vinicius Jr racism:

"The president has taken this to social media as well. Why would you do that? It's a live investigation, it's a live case. It's just happened. The tensions are at their highest at that point and he's chosen to respond to him via social media and say the things that have made Vinicius the victim. I don’t understand that but it kind of shows the way that they've dealt with things in the past," Townsend told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"The fact that La Liga haven’t dealt with it properly but they feel comfortable enough to say that they don't have a huge racist culture. What happened that evening was that Vinicius stated all of the occasions that he has been abused and there's no denying it.

"I would expect the officials to take total control, [and then] I'd expect the police to take total control and it's at that stage when you actually feel that the victim is going to be protected. That hasn't happened, and he's felt that the whole way through. And for the La Liga president to take it to social media kind of shows us what status it in in Spain, unfortunately."

  6. 'This may make La Liga reflect'published at 08:46 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Head of Player Engagement at Kick It Out, Troy Townsend, has been talking to BBC Radio 5 Live this morning about the racist abuse suffered by Vinicius Jr: "It's not been great [the way it was dealt with], if you want me to be honest. You look at the practices and procedures to deal with this in Spain and the only reason there's kind of been a media reaction is because of the outrage.

"The support for Vinicius, the incidents as we were watching them in the stadium. The racist language that was being used and then ultimately the fact that he got sent off for being the victim.

"I think it's kind of brought the way that the Spanish dealt with these incidents in the past and the way that they are dealing with this, right to the fore now. There doesn't seem to be a process in place to deal with these incidents.

"This may make them reflect. I am surprised they have actioned things so immediately but I do think it's based on the fact that there's been this global outrage and they've got to be seen to be doing something."

Salvador-based daily A Tarde on 23 May carried a front-page photo of Vinicius Jr, along with a banner headline proclaiming "Strength to you, Vini!".

A Tarde accompanied this with a hard-hitting editorial that denounced "ancestral racism" in Spain and linked it directly to the Spanish Conquest of the Americas.

"The dimension of the problem requires international action ... this evil must be uprooted to avoid it contaminating other countries," A Tarde said, recommending that the United Nations become involved.

Newspaper Correio Braziliense also published on its front page a striking drawn image of the soccer player with his left-fist raised and wearing a shirt inscribed with the words "Black Lives Matter".

"The strength of a black activist", read the daily's headline, which recalled that racism and racial tensions remained a hot-button topic in multi-racial Brazil.

The Brazilian government and media have thrown their weight behind Brazilian Real Madrid footballer Vinicius Jr, whose stand against the racist abuse he has experienced in Spanish football struck a chord in Brazil and also created a diplomatic incident between Brasilia and Madrid.

Major Brazilian media outlets on 22-23 May dedicated a flurry of headlines, reports and commentaries to the case of "Vini Jr", as he is popularly known, praising his public denunciation of Spanish fans and soccer authorities for the racist insults he has repeatedly received while playing in Spain's La Liga.

The outlets also highlighted a diplomatic protest made by the government of left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to Spanish authorities over the black Brazilian player's situation, and they widely published the arrests by Spanish police of seven suspects in the "hate crimes" case.

  11. La Liga requests more power to tackle racismpublished at 08:11 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

La Liga will request "more sanctioning powers" so it can punish incidents of racism in Spanish football, in the aftermath of the abuse Vinicius Jr suffered in Real Madrid's clash with Valencia on Sunday.

Under Spanish law, La Liga can currently only identify and report cases but not impose sanctions, making it feel "powerless".

It added it feels "tremendous frustration" at the lack of sanctions and convictions by the authorities to which it reports.

Police in Spain said on Tuesday three people had been arrested for "racist behaviour" during Sunday's match. Police had earlier said they had detained four people suspected of hanging an effigy of Vinicius from a bridge in Madrid earlier this year.

La Liga will make a formal request to the Spanish government that two laws are amended to give it authority to impose sanctions such as the total or partial closure of stadiums, bans for supporters and financial penalties.

  12. Players support Vinicius Jrpublished at 08:02 British Summer Time 24 May 2023

There has been widespread support for Vinicius Jr after he was racially abused at the weekend, including from his Brazilian compatriot, Barcelona's Raphinha, as well as Manchester United's Casemiro and Raphael Varane, who both played with the winger for Real Madrid.

Before Tuesday night's games between Real Valladolid and Barcelona, and Celta Vigo and Girona, players and match officials stood behind banners which read "Racism, out of football".

Barcelona winger Raphinha revealed a message of support in the second half when he was substituted.

Varane tweeted: "How many times can players be racially abused and it just keeps happening? Words have done nothing. We need more than statements, we need action against racism immediately. The threat of lifetime bans is not strong enough.

"We must do more to protect our players, and to protect our game."

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has said that Vinicius Jr will not be suspended, after being sent off in the 97th minute of the defeat Valencia, in which he was subject to racism, and is available for Wednesday's game against Real Vallecano.

The RFEF said in a statement that the referee's decision to dismiss Vinicius was due to him being "deprived of a decisive part of the facts", explaining that it was "impossible for him to properly assess what happened".

"It is considered proven that, as reflected by the referee in his minutes, there were racist shouts at Vinicius, altering the normal course of the match and considering the infractions very serious," added the statement.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has issued his support for Vinicius Jr after the winger was subject to racist abuse in the match against Valencia at the weekend.

Ancelotti says that any abuse should not be tolerated, and that 'it's not war, it's sport'.

Following the racist abuse Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr received at the weekend, three people have been detained in connection with the events and Valencia have been fined.

The Spanish club, who were hosting Real when it happened, have been fined 45,000 euros (£39,000).
