Mac Allister joined Brighton from Argentinos Juniors in January 2019 and immediately went back to the Buenos Aires club on loan.

He played his first match for the Seagulls in a goalless draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers in March 2020 and has since made 112 appearances for the club, scoring 20 goals.

Mac Allister has been capped 16 times by Argentina and played in six games of their 2022 World Cup-winning campaign in Qatar, scoring in a 2-0 win against Poland in the group stages.

The Argentina playmaker played a key role as Brighton finished sixth in the Premier League last season to qualify for Europe for the first time.

The 24-year-old also helped his country win the World Cup in December.

Liverpool need to add to their midfield with James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain leaving this summer.

They were priced out of a move for Borussia Dortmund's England teenager Jude Bellingham, who is a target for Real Madrid.

Mac Allister played a prominent part as the Seagulls secured European football for the first time in their 122-year history.

He made 40 appearances and scored 12 goals, mostly in a number 10 role but also at times in deeper midfield positions.

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi last month said Mac Allister was a "great player" who deserved to "play at a higher level".

  3. Mac Allister nothing but a 'good addition to Liverpool's midfield'published at 11:12 British Summer Time 8 June 2023

Alexis Mac AllisterImage source, Getty Images

Alexis Mac Allister's impending transfer from Brighton to Liverpool cannot be anything but a "good addition" to the Reds' midfield.

That is the opinion of presenter and Liverpool fan Paul Salt, speaking on BBC Radio Merseyside's The Red Kop podcast.

The Reds are in talks over signing the World Cup winner.

"Most of the press guys say Mac Allister's transfer to Liverpool is imminent," said Salt.

"I think most people will think he can't be anything but a good addition to Liverpool's midfield.

"He's a World Cup winner, he's played in the Premier League, he's played in a really fluid Brighton team - particularly under De Zerbi they play really good football.

"You put it all together and it would appear to be a good signing for Liverpool."

"We've said on this podcast for many months that the issue this season has been too many at the end of their careers and too many at the start," added co-host Giulia Bould.

"Brighton are fantastic so this will be really interesting. At 24, his peak years are still ahead of him."

Mac Allister has told Liverpool's website: “It feels amazing. It’s a dream come true, it’s amazing to be here and I can’t wait to get started.

“I wanted to be in [from] the first day of pre-season, so it’s good that everything is done. I’m looking forward to meeting my teammates.

“It was a fantastic year for me – World Cup, what we achieved with Brighton – but now it’s time to think about Liverpool and try to be a better player and a better human being every day.”

Mac Allister is the seventh Argentinian to represent Liverpool.

He added: “Since I won the World Cup, I said that I want to win more trophies and I think that this club will help me to do that – that’s the aim and when you are in a big club like this one you have to win trophies. So, that’s what I want.

“Since I arrived here, I can see how big this club is – the players we have, the staff, everyone. I’m really pleased and looking forward to playing for this club.”

The manner of victory could not have been any sweeter for West Ham.

Whilst Nayef Aguerd took time out to console Morocco team-mates Sofyan Amrabat at the final whistle, the celebrations of the Premier League team were something to behold.

From 18-year-old forward Divin Mubama, who played no part, to David Moyes himself, finally a trophy-winner after such a long career in management, all joined in joy, leaping around trying to take it all in.

There will be an unwanted post-script as Uefa is bound to come down hard on the Hammers for the unwanted first-half scenes that left Cristiano Biraghi playing with a bandage round his head for the last hour of the contest and forced the club to condemn those responsible.

However, that is for another day.

The reaction from the pitch and the stands at the final whistle give a lie to anyone who feels this tournament is beneath them and should give hope to Aston Villa, England's entrants next season.

At the centre of it all was Declan Rice. There was no thought of his future as he lapped up the adulation of the fans who have followed his journey from rising academy star to full England honours.

What a wonderful story for him. It is a fantastic night for him and all the players.

There is so much speculation around Declan Rice's future and West Ham chairman David Sullivan has shed some light on the situation.

When asked whether the historic victory over Fiorentina was Rice's last match in a West Ham shirt, Sullivan told talkSPORT: "I think it has to be.

"We promised him he could go. He set his heart on going. You can't ask for a man who has committed more to us this season.

"In due course, he has to get on and we have to get a replacement - or several replacements. It's not something we want to happen. We offered him £200,000-a-week 18 months ago. He turned it down.

"It's cost him £10million to stay at West Ham in that time (in lost wages). And he wants to go. You can't keep a player who doesn't want to be there."

I am told there were about 20,000 West Ham fans in their designated fan park last night.

The numbers in the Fiorentina equivalent were measured in the hundreds.

Many will be making their bleary-eyed way back to the UK this morning and doubtless some of them will be at the parade later when David Moyes and his players will make their way from West Ham to Stratford.

David Gray scoring the winner for Hibs against Rangers in 2016 to win the Scottish Cup for the first time in over 100 years. I ended up on the floor between two rows of seats such was the absolute mayhem that ensured. Grown men in tears all around. Will never forget it.

    Paul, Perth Scotland

Think 43 years is a long wait? Hibs had to wait 114 years before lifting the Scottish Cup in 2016. A 3-2 victory sealed with an injury time header from David Gray. Never had such a euphoric feeling at a football game and likely never will again.

    Graham, Edinburgh

As a Hibs fan, my favourite memory is obviously 2016, our only Scottish cup win in the last 120 years. We were paired against a team formed only four years prior to the final, so it's unlikely that English fans will be familiar with them. Having overcome an established top-flight team in the semis (Dundee United), Hibs were understandably complacent against the minnows - we were even losing with ten minutes remaining. The would-be Cinderellas thought Andy Halliday's screamer had won the cup, before Stokes and Gray spared our blushes and made history.

    Fiorentina 1-2 West Ham

There is a great fun fact on the Football Daily podcast which I have to share with you.

In terms of the major European trophies - Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League - there are only 11 English clubs that have won any of them. West Ham have now won two of them. It is only also Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham and Nottingham Forest who have done that.

[These nights] are few and far between. Look at David Moyes, you can go a whole career, a lifetime and not see any moment like this. When you think your chance might have gone, you look at players , you look at clubs who go through their whole existence with so little to celebrate at times.

Football is about pain and suffering the majority of the time. But it brings you these absolute unbridled moments of joy. for the fans, for the players, it is a moment you never forget. It's a moment you will always cherish.

Yes, the league is important. Yes, finishing in the Champions League spots is important. But it is about winning and these moments. You get glimpses in your career, snap shots of instances and this is one of those moments.

West Ham condemned the behaviour of "a small number of fans" after Fiorentina's Cristiano Biraghi was hit by an object thrown from the stands at the Europa Conference League final.

Biraghi was left bloodied after cups and other items were thrown as he took a corner during the match in Prague.

West Ham said "these actions have no place in football".

It followed trouble before the game, as 16 people were arrested after an incident at a bar.

"It is just amazing to see the smile on their faces we have been through such pain. I am just lost for words.

"As I said before the game its not just the players or staff that travel it is a whole club it means so much. It is so special, you cannot explain the love and the passion the people have for this football club.

"I look up and see so many people I know, I'm extremely lucky to grow up and play for the team I love. It is so special.

Thankfully had many a moment as a Liverpool fan from famous CL semi finals (Anfield rocking 40mins before kick off in 2005 and the belief of the third after the second goal against Barca)… plenty of domestic memories as well, but has to be the half second time stood still in the ground in Istanbul when Dudek saved the final penalty, for that moment in my seat, I thought it might still be bouncing in! That moment for me defied the universe and my understanding of time, it seemed to drag on forever yet was less than a second. I’ll never forget that.
