    HT: Wales 1-2 Armenia

I've just been told by a colleague that this is the first time Wales have conceded two goals in a qualifier game at home since Belgium in 2012.

Was the Wales defence sloppy or complacent?

  2. HALF-TIME - Wales 1-2 Armeniapublished at 20:35 British Summer Time 16 June 2023

Well what a half that was.

It all looked to be going so well when Dan James put Wales ahead.

But two goals for Armenia have stunned the home crowd and handed the hosts a big job.

    Great to watch though!

Wales in possession aren't doing badly at all, they need to get their attackers on the ball more and in higher positions.

Armenia can't cope with the runs off the back shoulders, we need to keep doing that, but we need to tighten up in defence.

Wales have got the bit between their teeth and are now piling on the pressure.

Harry Wilson and Conor Roberts trying to combine on the right but Armenia just about squeeze them out.

Frantic last few minutes coming up before half-time.

Wales need to get Brennan Johnson on the ball a little bit more.

As soon as the ball comes anywhere near him he's rapid off the mark, he's going to create a chance, Wales just need to get him the ball.

Harry Wilson is again the creator, he finds Brennan Johnson unmarked on the edge of the box but the Forest striker shoots tamely.

Easy save. Turns out Wilson was off-side so Johnson's blushes are saved.

Armenia are 71 places below Wales in the world rankings but you'd never know it on this showing.

    Wales 1-2 Armenia

Harry Wilson's corner is cleared but he sends in a second cross that Joe Rodon heads just wide.

This game surely has plenty more goals in it... maybe even before half-time!

And here come Wales through Harry Wilson.

The Fulham striker halts his run, squares the ball for Kieffer Moore but his effort is saved.

He tried to place it but it was not good enough to beat the keeper.

    Entertaining stuff from both sides.

This is end to end stuff.

Now Armenia are on the attack and Tigran Barseghyan narrowly misses from just outside the box.

Harry Wilson sends a long free-kick into the Armenia box, the ball pings around but is eventually cleared.

Joe Rodon bringing the ball out, tries to beat Ugochukwu Iwu, Iwu's like a brick wall just block tackles him.

I have to say Grant-Leon Ranos is in acres of space between Chris Mepham and Connor Roberts, that's not good enough, that's not good defending at all.

You've got to be touch tight to him.

The small number of Armenia fans are, as you'd expect, absolutely ecstatic.

There can be no more than 200 of them here and they can't believe what they're watching.

    Neither can the Wales fans.

    Grant-Leon Mamedova

Armenia are ahead. Cardiff City Stadium falls silent.

Joe Rodon tried to play out but was blocked by Ugochukwu Iwu and suddenly the Welsh defence was all over the place.

Armenia captain Eduard Spertsyan lets rip from distance and fires the ball into Row Z of the crowd behind the Wales goal.

It was wild... but he was given far too much space.

  17. Change of formation for Walespublished at 28 mins

    Wales 1-1 Armenia

    Nathan Blake
Former Wales striker on BBC Radio Wales

Wales need to slow the game down a little just maintain some control and get some control back, because I have to say in the last 10 minutes or so Armenia have looked dangerous.

I think Wales have switched to 4-4-2, Harry Wilson is going to help Connor Roberts on this right hand side and Brennan Johnson has gone up alongside Kieffer Moore.

Harry Wilson has gone down clutching his stomach and looks in some real pain.

We have a moment to take a breath and Robert Page has a chance to shout some instructions to his players.

Wilson is back on his feet... think he was winded.

Well that goal has really let the air out of the stadium.

It was bouncing after the early Wales opener but everyone now knows they have a game on their hands.
