    Wales v Armenia (19:45)

So earlier I shared a post by my colleague Iolo Cheung who asked if you knew the connection between two of Armenia's squad - Cancarevic and Davidyan - and Aberystwyth.

So the answer... bare with us, it's tenuous...

They once played for Alashkert against Connah’s Quay in a European match, but the Nomads played the game in Aber!

    Anyone get it right?

Massive kudos points to anyone who even came close!

Plenty has been said about the retirements of Gareth Bale, Joe Allen, Chris Gunter and Jonny Williams.

But Armenia are now without their own talisman Henrikh Mkhitaryan who retired from international duty last year after 95 appearances.

The Inter Milan attacking midfielder has played for some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including Manchester United, Arsenal and Roma.

Tonight's visitors will have a familiar face in the dugout though.

Boss Oleksandr Petrakov took charge of Armenia earlier this year but was here at Cardiff City Stadium last year as Ukraine manager when they lost the World Cup play-off to Wales.

Armenia - third seeds in Group D - have won just one of their last 14 competitive matches and without a win in their last nine outings.

A good time to play them? We'll soon find out.

Six points from six is the mantra for the current camp as far as Rob Page is concerned.

The Wales boss sees his side host Armenia at Cardiff City Stadium tonight before facing Turkey in Samsun on Monday.

"We want six points. That's our mentality going into it," Page said in his pre-match press conference.

"You win your home games and if you get a point away you're on to a good thing.

"The mentality in the changing room at the minute is that we believe we can go on to get the two wins."

"We have got the disappointment of the World Cup out of our system. That point in Croatia felt like a win, to get that equaliser so late on.

"But it wasn't just about the point - I would have been pleased with the performance in Croatia if we hadn't got anything out of the game.

"Friday's game, we can't worry about the opposition too much. We have to respect them but it's about us. If we can give a performance we're capable of, we can be a match for anybody."

Victory for Wales against Armenia guarantees Page's men will finish the day at the top of Group D.

  7. Let's hope for better this timepublished at 19:23 British Summer Time 16 June 2023

    Wales v Armenia (19:45)

The last time Wales faced Armenia - 22 years ago - the game was described as "one of the worst" in Welsh football history.

More than 18,000 fans turned up at the Millennium Stadium to watch Mark Hughes' side draw 0-0 with Armenia in the World Cup qualifier.

In contrast, it was on the same night that England beat Germany 5-1 in Munich!

    Wales v Armenia (19:45 BST)

For those of who love a stat...

    • Wales have never beaten Armenia
    • They have faced each other twice previously, in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers, and both games were drawn, 2-2 in Yerevan and 0-0 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
    • Armenia have only lost one of their previous four away matches against British sides (one win, two draws), although that was in their most recent game in June 2022 against Scotland in the UEFA Nations League.
    • Wales ended a run of nine matches without a win in all competitions (three draws, six defeats) with their 1-0 victory over Latvia in March. They last won consecutive games in October and November 2021 against Estonia and Belarus.
    • Since winning five games in a row between November 2020 and March 2021, Armenia have won just two of their past 21 games in all competitions (six draws, 15 defeats), winning none of their past nine (two draws, seven defeats) since beating the Republic of Ireland last June.
    • Wales are unbeaten in their past 12 home European Championship qualifying matches (nine wins, three draws) since losing 2-0 to England in March 2011.
    • Armenia have lost nine of their past 10 competitive international matches, conceding 29 goals across these defeats and losing the past six in a row by an aggregate score of 19-4.
    • Kieffer Moore scored the winning goal in Wales' 1-0 win over Latvia in their last European Championship qualifier. Since his debut, Moore is Wales' leading scorer with 10 goals, with six of those coming via headers - no other Welsh player has more than one headed goal in that time.
    • Daniel James assisted Moore's winning goal against Latvia - indeed, five of James' six assists for the Red Dragons have been provided for Moore.

  10. Wales captain Ramsey unsure over club futurepublished at 19:15 British Summer Time 16 June 2023

    Wales v Armenia (19:45 BST)

Aaron Ramsey will be hoping to deliver the goods for Wales tonight, but his club future remains uncertain.

The 32-year-old's contract with Nice expires this summer and he is yet to put pen to paper on fresh terms with the French club.

"I'm not sure what my future is at the moment," said Ramsey.

"But the most important thing for me to do right now is to focus on these games and we'll find out in a few weeks' time when everything's settled down.

"My full focus is on Friday [Wales' home match against Armenia]."

  11. Brooks' Wales return 'will be fantastic'published at 19:10 British Summer Time 16 June 2023

    David BrooksImage source, Getty Images

Former Premier League midfielder Nigel Reo Coker said "it will be fantastic" to see David Brooks back in action for Wales for the first time since his cancer treatment.

The Bournemouth winger is in Robert Page's squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Armenia and Turkey, after last playing for Wales in June 2021.

Speaking this week, Brooks said: "I don't just want to be called up to be a spare part. I'm working hard to get back in the Bournemouth team and be starting for Wales as well.

"The first step after the treatment was to get back into the Bournemouth dressing room and be part of that. As soon as that was completed, to get back in the Wales set-up was the aim. The lads have welcomed me with open arms."

Reo Coker told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast: "It will be fantastic to see him.

"I am a big fan of him and think he is a talented footballer from his time at Bournemouth. To go through what he has gone through and come back shows the type of strength of character and person he is.

"He said he doesn’t want sympathy and wants to be recognised for the good player he is. That tells you about the man he is and I would love to see him back on the pitch, for sure."

Hello and welcome to the Cardiff City Stadium where Wales hope to take another step towards qualification for Euro 2024.

Wales are second in Group D on goal difference after a creditable draw in Croatia and home win over Latvia.

This evening is the first of two chances to go top of the group with leaders Croatia facing Spain in the Nations League Final on Sunday.

Wales take on Turkey on Monday - but first are Armenia.

Robert Page's side are looking to qualify for a third successive European Championships and are ranked 71 places above tonight's opponents.

But they were reminded in March of just how tricky lower-ranked opponents can be when they were made to work for their 1-0 home victory over Latvia.

So first thing's first, let's have a look at the teams...
