Ukraine have lost to England and beaten both North Macedonia and Malta in their opening three qualifying matches.

In England's group, Ukraine have won 1-0 at home against Malta, but needed a second-half penalty from Viktor Tsygankov to get the victory.

Ukraine, second in Group C with six points from three matches, had earlier missed a penalty as former West Ham winger Andriy Yarmolenko hit the crossbar with his spot-kick.

Armenia, who beat Wales 4-2 in Cardiff on Friday, have gained another win in Group D as a 91st-minute winner from Tigran Barseghyan gave them a 2-1 win over Latvia.

In Group H, Finland thrashed San Marino 6-0 with Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara and ex-Norwich City striker Teemu Pukki both on the scoresheet as Daniel Hakans scored a nine-minute hat-trick with goals in the 65th, 72nd and 74th minutes.

North Macedonia's squad is littered with players who have experience in Europe's top five leagues. Striker Ilija Nestorovski, for example, plays for Udinese and previously led the line for Palermo.

Left wing-back Ezgjan Alioski will be fondly remembered for his time with Leeds United in the Premier League, while Stole Dimitrievski is goalkeeper for Rayo Vallecano.

There are others who have featured for Dynamo Zagreb in the Champions League too

He's got a great bond between himself and the players. His man management skills are excellent. When he first came in, he managed expectations by bringing the media into the camp and not making the media something that was behind a brick wall for these players.

All of a sudden, this wasn't a person behind a keyboard. It wasn't a person behind a pen. If the media want to write the stories and they know someone on a personal level, the stuff they write might be different. Their opinion of them might be different and they can look at it at a different angle.

Former England defender Ledley King speaking on the Football Daily podcast about Trent Alexander-Arnold: "In possession at Liverpool it is similar to where he has been playing. I think Gareth is trying to give Trent some time on the pitch because it's been difficult. We have Trippier, we have Walker. I've always felt that defensively that's always been the stigma with Trent. We know about his qualities going forward and I think that's why at times he's been overlooked. But moving him into midfield now, you get to see the best of his ability.

"I think it's something to look at, especially for England. I'm not sure if Liverpool would take it on but for England it's definitely something we can look at with the strength we have in that right-back position."

  13. 'We need to make a miracle'published at 18:44 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

England v North Macedonia (19:45 BST)

North Macedonia boss Blagoja Milevski says his side will need a "miracle" to get a result at Old Trafford.

"Individually or as a team, they are one of the best, have the best players in the world and showed their quality a few days ago," he said.

"On an international level and at club level, if we are talking about English football, it is the best in the world and it will be a great pleasure to play against them.

"On one way, it is the easiest. England is obviously the strongest in our group so there is no pressure on North Macedonia because our players are going to perform their best and - without that pressure - they are going to enjoy competing with England."

Macedonia, as they were known in 2006, have history against England at Old Trafford, earning a 0-0 draw during a campaign which saw Steve McClaren's side fail to reach Euro 2008.

"We are such a team that we need to make a miracle - any nervousness we have before the match, we are going to forget on the pitch," added Milevski.

"This in front of us maybe happens once or twice in your career as a player and a management team and we need to show we are able to do miracles like we did in other competitions.

"We have shown many times this team has the ability to compete against the biggest international teams and we are going to do our best."

England beat Italy and Ukraine - their two main rivals - in their March games to take early control of the group - and whacked Malta 4-0 on Friday.

They can make it 12 points from four games tonight.

That would possibly give Gareth Southgate's side a potential chance to seal qualification in September with two international windows to spare.
