  1. 'Stones' improvement is immense'published at 19:37 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

England v North Macedonia (19:45 BST)

    Steven Gerrard
    Former England and Liverpool captain

    Speaking on Channel 4

He's had criticism in the early part of his career and he's addressed the minor weaknesses and I expect him to just go from strength to strength.

I think he'll drop into centre-back tonight and he'll cruise this game. He's got the experience and he's got the composure.

He's absolutely smashing it at the moment.

  2. What's next for Eze?published at 19:36 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

England v North Macedonia (19:45 BST)

    Matthew Upson
Former England defender on BBC's Football Daily podcast

It's very hard to say because we've got players in there who are of high quality and established as well. The likes of Rashford, the likes of Maddison, who plays more that attacking midfield position.

But he's got versatility, Eze, and I think he can play a number of roles which may well just see him in to more future squads and be more competitive in those positions.

This century, England have won 19 out of 24 home Euros qualifiers... but two of the five home games they have failed to win have been against North Macedonia (then called Macedonia) in 2002 and 2006.

  4. Can Alexander-Arnold play in midfield in 'bigger matches'?published at 19:34 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

England v North Macedonia (19:45 BST)

    Steven Gerrard
    Former England and Liverpool captain

    Speaking on Channel 4

I think he has done on certain occasions for Liverpool. I think he is still inexperienced in this position.

If he keeps putting in performances like he did on Friday, he will gain confidence.

I think the difference between Liverpool and England is when Liverpool lose possession they counter-press. I think the England system suits him better.

England have never lost a game against tonight's opponents under any name (W2 D2).

But both those draws came in England - 2-2 at St Mary’s in October 2002 and 0-0 at Old Trafford in October 2006, both in Euros qualifiers.

  6. 'Grealish deserves to celebrate'published at 19:33 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

England v North Macedonia (19:45 BST)

    Steven Gerrard
    Former England and Liverpool captain

    Speaking on Channel 4

I think he well deserved to get let his hair down and they have just achieved the best thing in his career.

I'm not going to sit here at any moment and say they've gone over the line. If they can't celebrate after a Treble when can you?

The player who has been the talk of this internatonal break has been Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Liverpool player was excellent against Malta.

This is another step up, albeit in a game England should dominate but it's another step in this role for England. Gareth Southgate said having Alexander-Arnold in this role is 'exciting'.

If you swap Bellingham for Henderson then that’s 9 of the first choice 11 decided. Two outstanding questions are Stones’s CB partner and the fourth attacking role, today filled by Trent (alternatively someone like Foden, Grealish or Maddison). Trent may offer more balance than the others, and also allows us to easily switch to 3-4-3 mid game with Walker tucking in at RCB.

  15. Southgate jokes about players 'tapping up'published at 19:21 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

England v North Macedonia (19:45 BST)

England manager Gareth Southgate joked his players will be "tapping up" team-mates while on international duty but says the focus remains on this game.

"I haven't felt the need to say anything," laughed Southgate.

"The players are tapping each other up anyway on the quiet so I can't do anything about that."

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice is a long-term target of Arsenal, while there is speculation around Leicester City's James Maddison after the Foxes' relegation from the Premier League.

England captain Harry Kane's future is also being talked about as he enters the last year of his contract at Tottenham Hotspur.

"I remember as a player getting too wrapped up in every detail of that. In the end, there is only a small amount that you can actually control," Southgate said.

"I think all of those things will happen later on in the summer and I think the players understand that."

Luke Shaw is one player who has been joking with his team-mates about their futures, posting pictures on Instagram with Rice and Kane on a 'Carrington tour' of Manchester United's training ground, where the England team prepared for this game.

Chelsea's Mason Mount is also linked with a move to Manchester United and the Blues have had a £40m offer rejected.

"Obviously, he is not here but I think it is all just a bit of banter really," Shaw said.

"We have a joke and a laugh about it. (I'm) not too sure what goes on behind the scenes.

"It is to do with the club really but of course when we are here we are always together and we have a joke about it."

They had a stoppage-time equaliser ruled out on Friday.

A win over Kazakhstan, who start the day second, would give them a huge lift though.

The Irish have lost to France and Greece in their opening two games. With the Netherlands also in the group, and only the top two qualifying, if they are going to challenge they'll need to win most of their games from here.
