  1. Keep an eye on 'Kvaradona'published at 19:30 British Summer Time 20 June 2023

    Scotland v Georgia (19:45)

We were all worried about Erling Haaland on Saturday and that turned out all right, with Steve Clarke astutely ordering his team to start playing properly once the superstar striker had been withdrawn in the closing minutes.

Georgia have their own star name, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, fresh from an outstanding debut season at Serie A champions Napoli.

Fans have nicknamed him 'Kvaradona' and not just because it's easier to pronounce. Even if you haven't seen any of his fantastic goals, the comparison to the legendary Maradona should be enough to indicate he is a serious talent.

Some of the longer passes the players hitting in the warm up are getting stuck a bit on the surface and other ones are just bouncing and skidding off the top.

It really is difficult to find the appropriate footwear to wear in these types of conditions. When there's been so much water so quickly it just sits on top of the grass, it can be really tricky.

  3. Here comes the rain againpublished at 19:27 British Summer Time 20 June 2023

There was a brief break in the rain, but it's coming down in rods again.

Remember, it was a foul, wet night when Spain were sent home to think again in March.

  4. Georgia in good nickpublished at 19:24 British Summer Time 20 June 2023

    Scotland v Georgia (19:45)

Currently, Georgia look more of a threat than Norway, with Steve Clarke saying they are the strongest of all the pot 4 nations.

Recent results back that up, with just one defeat in 15.

They fought back for a draw at home to Norway and won 2-1 in Cyprus at the weekend.

In 2022, they enjoyed away wins over Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, scoring five in the latter game.

    No mugs.

For the last fortnight, Scotland has basked in sunshine. Maryhill has resembled Marbella, weans have been drenched in sun cream and stocks of Prime ice poles have been rationed. It's all been rather unfamiliar.

That sunshine followed the national team to Oslo over the weekend for a truly landmark result. Victory was clutched from the jaws of defeat in the most sensational circumstances, causing some to get carried away and search for flight prices to Frankfurt and the like for next summer. £115, by the way.

The heavens have opened at the national stadium as the Georgians, Scotland's bogey team, come to town looking to dampen the party mood. Hopefully they don't deliver a soggy dose of reality.

Scotland's late smash and grab in Oslo on Saturday has left Norway reeling, with the third seeds a long way back.

They are at home to Cyprus this evening and we'll keep half an eye on that one.

Three in a row has now been done three times...

Scotland reached the 1974 World Cup with a game to spare by defeating Denmark twice and Czechoslovakia. That was in the days of three-team groups.

There were a whopping seven teams in our section in the scramble for places at Euro 2008 and that started with wins over Faroe Islands, France and Lithuania.

We'll circle back to that campaign a bit later given tonight's opponents...

  8. First time for four in a row?published at 19:13 British Summer Time 20 June 2023

Scotland are aiming to make a little bit of history at Hampden.

Never before have we won the first four matches in a qualifying group.

Willy Sagnol has played in a World Cup final and has a Champions League winners' medal.

He was a brilliant full-back for France and Bayern Munich, but his memories of Hampden may be sour since he was playing when Gary Caldwell struck to give Scotland a famous win in October 2006.

He was denied a goal by a superb Craig Gordon save that day.

  10. 'On a good day, Georgia can beat anybody'published at 19:09 British Summer Time 20 June 2023

    Scotland v Georgia (19:45)

Talking yesterday, Georgia boss Willy Sagnol described Scotland as "a great team with fantastic spirit".

He also fancies his team's chances of an upset.

"We can go out there without any pressure," he said. "We just want to play the best match we can and keep going with our positive evolution from the last two years.

"We have shown recently against big teams when it wasn’t expected, sometimes it was deserved.

"I have a group of players, who, on a good day, can beat anybody. The key is how to keep the discipline and the intensity."

  11. 'It's nice to be loved'published at 19:06 British Summer Time 20 June 2023

    Scotland v Georgia (19:45)

Scotland manager Steve Clarke is not one for getting ahead of himself but he has been enjoying the run his team are on and the high spirits in the stands.

At yesterday's press conference he said: "Everybody likes to be loved so when you come into the environment at Hampden Park and the players feel the reception of the crowd before the game and in the warm-up, the national anthem, and hopefully when the game starts we can start on the front foot and get the crowd behind us – it is nice to be loved.

"They want to do well for the crowd. So let’s try to keep that momentum and keep going.

"If you are doing well professionally you feel good about yourself.

"The players are feeling good and looking forward to putting on another good performance and hopefully we get the right result and that feel-good factor continues."

Managed to get a wee deek at the highly anticipated fan zone here at Hampden before the rain arrived...

The fans were fair enjoying it and rightly so. Even if it was mince, to be honest, I don't think anything could dampen their mood. Optimism is high and everyone is buzzing... Why wouldn't they be?

No need for the sprinklers at Hampden since the rain is absolutely hammering down.

The pitch should be nice and slick. It will also cool things down considerably after the sweltering conditions in Oslo on Saturday.

The stats boffins at Gracenote reckon Scotland are already a shoo-in for a top two place in Group A.

According to the numbers crunched, Steve Clarke's side have a 91% chance.

I'll relax when that figure gets to 100%.

I think if we win tonight, we're just about done. It's a massive game, but it's a difficult game. You have a feeling just now though about this team.

They looked down and out on Saturday. They proved me wrong, they proved everybody wrong. They have incredible belief.

  18. Gilmour starts for Scotlandpublished at 18:38 British Summer Time 20 June 2023

Scotland make just one change from Saturday's 2-1 win in Norway, with Billy Gilmour coming in for Ryan Christie.

That should allow Scott McTominay, who has four goals in this campaign already, to play further forward.

A Scotland victory would put them eight points clear at the halfway stage.

Scotland manager Steve Clarke referred to the eight-game qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 as "a sprint" the other day - and his team have come haring out of the blocks with three wins from three.

Can they keep going for the gold and silver places that will bring a place at the finals in Germany next year?

Already sitting pretty at the top of Group A, a win over Georgia at Hampden tonight would be another massive stride forward.
