Michael O'Neill: "I'm optimistic that we have got some very good young players but we are probably asking too much of them at this moment of time. We need our older players and we need to hang on to them as long as we can.

"At the moment there are players in the latter stages of their career and there are players right at the infancy of their career. We probably don't have enough players who are making a big enough impact in that middle age group. That is something we have to try and work on as well.

"The games in September will be difficult, a big test and big challenge for us but that is what it is about. You have to go away to difficult places and we will go there, will hopefully a little bit more strength in our squad than we've had in the opening two international windows. We will hopefully have Corry Evans back, I'm not sure about Stuart Dallas or Steven Davis. We have a lot of players who can come back and strength us as a group."

  3. 'It's heartbreaking'published at 22:23 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

    FT: Northern Ireland 0-1 Kazakhstan

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill: "It's tough. It was a very tough goal for us to lose. To concede the way we do at that stage of the game, it's heartbreaking really. That has been the pattern of the games we have played so far. We lost narrowly here to Finland and we lost narrowly in Copenhagen and now tonight.

"I don't think tonight was a game that we should have lost. We did everything to try and win it, and we made as many attacking substitutions as we could. There was a lot of younger players coming in and starting the game and I was pleased with a lot of aspects of their performances. But if you concede the nature of the goals we have done in all of those three defeats then it is very difficult at this level to get back into the game. That's proven to be the case."

  4. 'It hurts'published at 22:14 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

    FT: Northern Ireland 0-1 Kazkahstan

Northern Ireland striker Shayne Lavery: "It hurts. All the lads will agree with me in there, it's very quiet at the minute with all the work we have put in and we think performance have been better.

"Tonight out final ball or creativity in the final third just wasn't there and it's very, very frustrating. You can always learn from defeat. I don't think it was for a lack of effort. A lot of lads had a long season. Before we went out the gaffer said we deserved a win for the work we had put in. It's not easy this time of season but it's very frustrating not to end with the three points tonight."

I'm itching to get going! There is nothing that beats nights like this, I know the result didn't go our way but when the fans are singing and you are singing the national anthem there is no better feeling!

  7. 'Deflated and down'published at 22:03 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

    FT: Northern Ireland 0-1 Kazakhstan

Northern Ireland winger Conor McMenamin: "We're deflated and we're down. We've been away on two training camps there and we've been together for nearly three weeks. It's been tough and to get nothing out of it has been really disappointing.

"We have to learn, like the manager said. It's such a tight group and there's not much between the teams. We got punished it was a really sloppy goal and we can't keep giving goals like that away.

"At this level it is such fine margins and you get punished for mistakes. When you get chances you have to take them or you get punished."

It's been a period of transition even before the campaign. Michael will prepare to get a result in the last four games.

But at the end of the campaign if we have three or four 19-year-old players who have played a lot of minutes that will stand us well in the future. The likes of Taylor, Charles and Hume will be around the team for the next ten years!

Three other home nations were in action this evening.

England, as expected, hammered North Macedonia 7-0 as Bukayo Saka hit a hat-trick.

Harry Kane scored twice while Marcus Rashford and Kalvin Phillips also netted at Old Trafford.

The Republic of Ireland finally broke Gibraltar's resistence and won 3-0 at the Aviva Stadium as Mikey Johnston, Evan Ferguson and Adam Idah netted in Dublin.

Wales lost 2-0 in Turkey after going down to 10 men at the end of the first half.

A draw would have been a fair result but if you look at the amount of young players Miachel has had to give chances to in the last two games.

It is a game of chances and Kazakhstan took their chance. I don't believe Kazakhstan came here and blew us away, it was well within our grasp to win.

Kazakhstan are in the position that we thought we'd be in when the group was announced but it just hasn't gone our way.

Where does that leave Northern Ireland?

Not in a great place, to be honest.

Kazakhstan join Finland on seven points, while a 1-1 draw between Denmark and Slovenia moves both teams onto seven points.

Northern Ireland remain fifth on three points, with San Marino firmly bottom.

  19. Room for optimism?published at 21:43 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

I think Shea Charles will be a good player for us, McMenamin made a statement that maybe he should start and then Taylor came on and done well.

There are little pockets of optimism which Michael can build on.

  20. 'Qualification is gone'published at 21:42 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

    FT: Northern Ireland 0-1 Kazakhstan

    John O'Neill
Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio Ulster

That's qualification gone but Michael said qualification wasn't his main ambition. We've had a lot of injuries and we know that the team is in transition. We have a lot of young players who are going to have to grow up quickly.
