Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio Ulster

Overall it's been very disappointing, we've had enough possession but just not enough quality balls into the box. We're also too slow getting forward and its been comfortable for their defence.

I think Michael will make changes at the break and I certainly hope we up the tempo!

  2. It's gone a bit flat for NI after good startpublished at 20:37 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

    HT: Northern Ireland 0-0 Kazakhstan

    Mark Sterling
BBC Sport NI at Windsor Park

Northern Ireland really should be going in a goal up at the break.

Those headers from Craig Cathcart and George Saville were fine chances, even if both players had to stretch to get their head to the ball.

The hosts looked really good in possession for the opening 20 minutes but they have been sloppy at times with the ball and could have fallen behind when Maxim Samorodov missed from close range.

You wonder how soon it might be before Michael O'Neill looks to make changes. It might take that to reignite a home performance that has gone a bit flat.

  3. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:33 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Kazakhstan

Northern Ireland win a corner but it's easily cleared. Kazakhstan break and Bakhtiyar Zaynutdinov lashes an effort well wide.

That probably sums up the later stages of the first-half.

A bright start which ground to a halt.

  4. Promising signs?published at 20:31 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Kazakhstan

    John O'Neill
Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio Ulster

That's the style of play we want. Pass the ball forward quickly which makes it hard for the defenders to defend.

  5. CLOSE!published at 20:30 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Kazakhstan

George Saville heads over from close range!

Dion Charles is again involved out of the right and he sets it up to the back post after a bit of trickery.

Saville couldn't get under it and it's over the bar. That long wait for his first international goal goes on.

Hume thinks he has won a free-kick in the Kazakhstan half but it's not given.

The visitors break but Ramazan Orazov is so far offside he's almost out of the ground.

    Nothing else to report.

Shea Charles has been our best player. If it was me, I'd be giving the ball to him at every opportunity and be trying to play off him.

  11. Too early to get edgy?published at 20:21 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Kazakhstan

    Mark Sterling
BBC Sport NI at Windsor Park

Northern Ireland's tempo has just dropped here in the last few minutes.

Paddy McNair and Craig Cathcart have both lost the ball when an early pass was on.

That sloppiness has just given the visitors a little sniff of an opening and it's something Michael O'Neill will be determined for his side to cut out.

Thirty-five minutes gone. It's too early to get edgy isn't it?

    No, no they can't.

Ramazan Orazov wins a free-kick off Cathcart deep in the Northern Ireland half.

Can the visitors fashion a chance?

  14. Postpublished at 20:16 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Kazakhstan

Northern Ireland have had just shy of 60% possession. Honestly, it's felt like more than that.

Still no clear-cut chance from open play, however. Just Craig Cathcart's big miss from a corner.

Kazakhstan are trying to slow the game down as much as possible. That's understandable because possession-wise they're getting a lesson here.

    Northern Ireland come again.

Prince lobs in a high delivery and Ali McCann, nowhere near as big as the visiting defenders, manages to get his head on the ball but Igor Shatsky plucks it out of the air.

The Kazakhstan half of the pitch is mostly covered in the south Belfast evening sunshine.

Behind the goal in the opposite half, the Kop are working their way through their tracklist.

It's not the loudest Windsor has ever been, but it's a decent noise all the same.

Askhat Tagybergen has a go from 40 or 50 yards but it's well, well wide.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell could have had time for a cup of tea before jogging over to get the ball. Wild stuff.

    I don't believe he's missed that!

That's as bad of a miss as the Kazakhstan one earlier. All he has to do is get that on target as the keeper is beaten!
