I don't think Haaland will be in England long enough to break Kane's record, he'll be off (Spain) in a couple of years, and he'll need 4 more at his current rate to achieve it. I think he's already said he wants to prove himself in all the major leagues.

When coach Steve Cooper was putting together the foundations for Nottingham Forest to survive in the Premier League, it was perhaps fitting that the first player he signed for his mammoth building job was a former bricklayer.

And how Taiwo Awoniyi repaid him, as the Nigerian provided Forest's first win of the season - a 1-0 win over West Ham - and also their last, in the crucial 1-0 defeat of Arsenal that secured Premier League survival in May.

That came with one week of the season left, with Awoniyi also scoring in the final game to bookend Forest's season in terms of goals and enable him to reach double figures in the league.

It represented a glorious end to a campaign in which Forest had long toiled for Premier League survival, with the successful results only coming late on - much like Awoniyi's club career itself.

  4. 'I really believe Forest can stay up'published at 11:24 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

Arsenal v Nottingham Forest (12:30 BST)

A positive start to the season at home will be key if Nottingham Forest are to achieve Premier League survival again, says former midfielder Chris Cohen.

Steve Cooper's side face Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City in their first six away games but open at the City Ground with winnable fixtures against newly promoted Sheffield United and Burnley.

"I don't think there will be nine teams involved in it (the relegation battle) again," Cohen told BBC Radio Nottingham's Shut Up and Show More Football podcast.

"The biggest thing for Forest if there's four or five involved is to just not be one of them. Get some points early, especially at home. Those first five away games - I think Derby fans have picked those but the home fixtures are a real opportunity to pick up points.

"If you win the home games then all of a sudden the away games are exciting and it's 'can we nick something'? If you lose those home games it puts a lot of pressure on the team early on.

"If they pick up some points early on I really believe Forest can stay up but it's all about, when that first whistle blows, performing to the best of their ability."

Cohen made 303 appearances across 11 years at the club and believes the boost given to Forest fans by being in the Premier League after such a long absence fuelled an atmosphere that was key in them avoiding relegation last season.

"The noise and the way that all the pundits spoke about it - because maybe it was their first time experiencing the City Ground - was incredible," he added.

"It added to the points tally I've absolutely no doubt. When it was rocking, teams wilted and players wilted and didn't show their full ability and that will be so needed again.

"They'll come in their numbers like they always do and I really hope they can push the team on."

  5. Premier League winners or 'a frustrating season'?published at 11:21 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

Arsenal v Nottingham Forest (12:30 BST)

On our club pages we asked you where Arsenal will finish this season and why?

Here are some of your answers:

David: I feel Arsenal will be contenders again, but I still do not think they are strong enough to win. Our first team is a match for any Premier League team including Manchester City but they still have the superior squad. Arsenal are close but not quite there yet.

Dave: I think Arsenal are going to win it this time around. Last season our inexperience during the run-in to the end of the season cost us the Premier League. But we have strengthened and got rid of a couple of deadweights. I think if Arteta can get good rotation within his squad then we have a chance, even in the Champions League!

Ronan: A new season but will we cope with a raft of high-end Champions League games and an ever-more demanding Premier League. I am not sure about Kai Havertz's addition as I would love our homegrown players to actually get a better run this season, for example Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nektiah. And why sell Folarin Balogun when we need goals? It could be a frustrating season for us but in Arteta we trust!

Ben: My heart says first, but realistically second with maybe a couple of cups to show off.

Michael: Arsenal will win the Premier League this season. The squad has come on in leaps and bounds, plus they are hungrier for trophies.

    BBC shows

Manchester City made it a hat-trick of Premier League titles when they won the Treble last season - now they have a new target.

Pep Guardiola's side are aiming to become the first team in the 135-year history of English league football to be crowned champions four times in a row - and the challenge for everyone else is to stop them.

Arsenal faltered in the final weeks of last season after spending 248 days at the top of the table - will they last the distance this time, and who else will figure at the top?

Can Manchester United build on their third-place finish by mounting a serious title bid for the first time since they were champions in 2013?

Newcastle are back in the Champions League this season after a 20-year absence, but will they stay in the top four? Could Liverpool be contenders again? Can Tottenham or Chelsea rise from mid-table under new managers? Or will anyone else be in the mix?

We asked 26 BBC TV and radio pundits to pick their top four, with explanations for their selections.

There are always plenty of predictions ahead of a Premier League season. We're as guilty as anyone on that front. You can read plenty on our site.

What we'd also like to know, though, is what you're own personal predictions are for 2023-24. And we're not just talking about who will win, who will get relegated and the like. In fact, the more niche the prediction the better.

And if predictions aren't your thing then why not send us your hopes, fears and all the other emotive stuff that gets people's juices flowing ahead of a new season.

So, a nice quiet morning ahead of the Premier League starting, yeah?!

There'll be more Kane to chat to come, inevitably, but we'll also start looking ahead to today's first Saturday of the 2023-24 season.

Man City got things under way last night with a very City-like, Haaland-themed win at Burnley.

How are the rest going to respond today?

  15. Kane to be Bundesliga top scorer?published at 10:58 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

Harry Kane signs for Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich's top scorer in the Bundesliga last season was Serge Gnabry with 14 goals.

Considering Harry Kane has scored over 30 goals in the last three Premier League seasons, it's safe to say he will be increasing on that total in the 2023/24 season.

Kane will join a long line of ex Spurs players who didn’t win any silverware with the club, but went on to win trophies soon after they left (Gareth Bale, Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, Luka Modric, Christian Eriksen, Juan Foyth - the list goes on). Good luck to him too!

    Ben

As a Spurs fan, you always have to have hope - "It's not a goodbye because you never know how things will pan out in the future". Could we see him back in 3 years after winning some trophies in Germany? As always with Spurs though, it's the hope that kills you.

Spurs fan since the Double - 60+ years. Kane has character, all-round skills, he’s more than just a wonderful striker. Not felt so down since Greaves left, but we got Martin Peters then and it helped make Chivers’ career. Trying to be positive.

Harry Kane also shared a good luck message to new Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou and the rest of the Spurs team for this season:

"I felt this was the right time to leave. I didn't want to go into the season with a lot of unresolved future talk. I think it is important for the new manager and the players to concentrate on trying to get Tottenham back to around the top of the table and fighting for trophies. I wish Ange and all the boys the best of luck. I'll be watching from a fan point of view now and really hope you can be successful.

"This is a message to all the fans around the world. Every single Tottenham fan who has supported me and been with me throughout my journey. Me and my family will cherish it forever. We will never forget all the moments we've had together. Thank you. I will be watching this season.

"Good luck to Tottenham and good luck to the whole club. [This is] not goodbye, because you never know how things pan out in the future, but it is a thank you and I'll see you soon."

  19. 'A lot of emotion is going through me right now'published at 10:35 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

Harry Kane signs for Bayern Munich

Harry Kane posted a video message on his social media channels this morning, as his move to Bayern Munich was confirmed: "Obviously a lot of emotion is going through me right now. I am sad to be leaving a club that I have spent nearly 20 years of my life at. From an 11-year-old boy to a 30-year-old man now, there have been so many great moments and special memories. Memories that I will cherish forever.

"This is a thank you to all my team-mates over the years, all the coaches, managers, every single staff member to do with the club. From the kit men to the chefs, I have built special relationships with a lot of people.

"But most importantly a thank you to the Tottenham fans. From the moment I haver been playing I have been one of your own and I have given everything I possibly could to make you proud and give you as many special moments and memories to hopefully last forever."

Derm: Can't blame Kane for going and he deserves respect for going abroad and expanding his horizons. Can't help but think he should have stayed the final year at Spurs then went wherever he pleased next summer. As for those saying Shearer's record is now safe. Two words - Erling Haaland.

Anon: Best of luck to Kane, he leaves with most Spurs fan’s blessings. It’s Spurs and Levy who have let him down over the years - lack of investment, poor managerial choices and lack of ambition. We won’t have a striker like Kane for a long time (unless he comes back - fingers crossed).

Tom: Happy for Kane, he deserves to be at a club where he can truly show he's world class and where he doesn't have to carry a team on his back. I feel Levy and Spurs have treated him poorly over the last few years and he's conducted himself with class and dignity throughout - Good Luck Harry.
