  1. 'The game was decided by our ruthlessness'published at 20:25 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    Newcastle 5-1 Aston Villa

    Newcastle United

Eddie Howe speaking to BBC’s Match of the Day on the 5-1 win over Aston Villa:“We’re very pleased. It was a tough game, Aston Villa are a very good team. We knew we had to be at our best. We scored five, we could have scored more but they were also in the game.

"It was a tight game decided by our ruthlessness in front of goal. Everything clicked for us today."

On Sandro Tonali:"Really pleased with Sandro, really good today. He has settled in well and adapted to the style really well. The goal will do him no harm at all, and the same for Harvey [Barnes].

On his centre-forward options:"I went with Alex [Isak] today. Alex and Callum [Wilson] are two really top players and we saw Alex do well and then Callum come on and do well, that’s what we are going to need throughout a hard season.

"Wilson is a top player and he looked razor-sharp when he came on."

On upcoming fixtures: "We knew it was a difficult start so you look at this game as a massive moment in our season. Now we have to go to Manchester City which is the hardest place to go. We’ve got to embrace the challenge and then of course, Liverpool, but we will focus on Man City first."

  2. 'Everything this week is not working'published at 20:22 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    Newcastle 5-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has been speaking to BBC's Match of the Day about Tyrone Mings’ injury: "It doesn’t look good. He is injured. This week has been very tough, we lost Emi Buendia and today we lost Tyrone Mings, two important players in the squad. Everything this week is not working well but we are going to react. I want to be positive with the players we have and we can change the situation."

On the 5-1 loss to Newcastle: "We are going to try to analyse everything and focus on the next match. We will try to understand why we lost but Newcastle were good, they are strong at home and they won."

On the transfer window: “We are trying to be intelligent in the window. After these two injuries we will have to analyse the squad and the way we are going to face this year."

This was Newcastle's biggest win in their opening match of a league campaign since 2002-03 (4-0 v West Ham), while it's the first time Aston Villa have conceded 5+ in their first league match since 1951-52 (2-5 v Bolton Wanderers).

More from Unai Emery, on Tyrone Mings' injury:"It doesn't look good."

Could it be as bad as Buendia?" Yes it is worse always in the position we tried to avoid injured players. It doesn't look good.

"We have lost two players and they are very important players. We have to analyse."

How important is it to not let this define your season? "We're not changing our idea. We are going to be very demanding but we know the top seven teams in the Premier League. One of them is Newcastle. We have to analyse and try to get again our way. But the worst is the injured player."

Moussa Diaby: "After the result, after the injured player, it is something that is good and we watch it in some circumstances on the pitch we try to be positive. And then we will think only in this match. Then we will think in the next match and try again to build our structure as soon as possible."

  5. 'The result is bad, but the worst thing was Mings' injury'published at 20:13 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    Newcastle 5-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to Sky Sports after the loss against Newcastle: "Newcastle are strong at home and they started winning and when we were in the match and we score the goal and we had good chances with Ollie [Watkins]. In the second half we tried to change and tried to control the match but when they scored the third goal the match was finished. But Newcastle deserved in 90 minutes to win and then we had some momentums that were good but it wasn't enough today.

"This week is very sad for us. With Emilio Buendia, today with Tyrone Mings. We lost today but there was something that was more than we wanted but the worst today was the injury with Tyrone. We have to take some days in reflection and then prepare for the game against Everton."

On the big scoreline: "Of course, each match is different. I always try to keep clean sheets as a way to win. We did that last year but it is a new year and we played today the power was big and we have to react. The worst today is the injured player and only when we analyse and try to review the mistakes we did today but it is three points and we have the next match at home."

  6. 'I had to use my disappointment positively'published at 20:11 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    Newcastle 5-1 Aston Villa

    Newcastle United

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson, speaking after the win against Aston Villa: "We are playing against a top team today. We played them in pre-season and we drew 3-3 so we knew how difficult it was going to be. From that moment on and in pre-season we knew we had to knuckle down and work hard so that today we could put in a performance to impress the fans and get a result."

You had to wait for your chance: "Yeah, as a professional you want to start the game. You have use that disappointment that when you do get on the pitch you put your best foot forward. I got on the scoresheet but to be honest I wanted more. I think I hit it too soon and didn't let it come across my body enough. It is something to work on."

That's four in four Premier League opening games now... "It is. I should have told the manager that before the game."

How important is the win? "Yeah it was vitally important, especially at home today to make sure we get off the mark. The games are tougher week by week so we have to makes sure we get points on the board."

On the new signings: "Sandro [Tonali] is a quality player, we knew that when he joined the club in pre-season. Today he made his mark on his debut and got a goal. Harvey [Barnes], as a striker you thrive off those chances when he's running through."

Here's more from manager Eddie Howe speaking to Sky Sports about Newcastle's transfer window: "We’re hoping for one more [signing], no guarantee, but we will fight to the end to strengthen.

“We are getting there. Every transfer window we have got stronger. We’ve lost Allan Saint-Maximin, who was a massive player for us, we’re going to miss his unpredictability."

On the season ahead: "We want the supporters to dream. We have to focus on Manchester City away – it’s the hardest fixture in the Premier League so that is a sobering thought for us. We’re looking at can we win the game fully in the knowledge they are the best team, they have been the bench mark."

On added time: "The squad dynamic is more important than ever with the added time. We had a strong bench today and hopefully we can carry that through the season."

After losing Emi [Buendia], it is a bitter bow and we are keeping our fingers crossed for him. It is devastating to see him like that. Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak speaking to Sky Sports after scoring twice in the 5-1 win over Aston Villa: "Maybe if you look at the score. It's the first game of the season, they can be a bit tight. We wanted to give a good first impression, win the game, be very positive that we managed to score so many goals."

On Sandro Tonali's performance: "Yeah, I think prior to his arrival we all knew his quality and today, it is not easy to come to a new league and make such a debut as he did. The same as Harvey [Barnes], so really impressive.

"We all know the quality we have in the squad. You always want to play good and the sooner the better. I am happy for the team and those players."

Do you feel fitter this term? "Yeah for sure. I had some trouble last season. I feel good now, got a good start and hopefully I can stay fit and keep going this way.

"It is the first game of the season so we need to take one game at a time. We now look at City and that's what we can focus on."

How much has the squad improved? "A lot. I think the players we brought in fit really well with this team,. You see the speed and how dangerous we can be on the counter-attack. I think the additions have been good and it's only going to get better."

On Anthony Gordon: "I think he did well today as well. Great assist to Sandro on the first goal and you can see he is getting better and better. It is going to be helpful as well."

They say one swallow doesn't make a summer. But Newcastle fans will be drinking this in, and will likely be doing so many times this season.

As for Aston Villa, this will be one of the hardest places they have to come to this season, but they have been well beaten.

They won't be in any danger, they will probably finish in the top half again.

We asked which of these teams will be moving on up before the game, but we know which one it is. It's Newcastle.

See those two Newcastle defenders, they are five one up and they are battling each other to keep the ball out of the net.

Even though it is the last minute, even though this game is done, they don't want to give anything else away.
