Odsonne Eduard off the mark for Palace with a simple finish but really the visitors should have been further clear as they dominated possession and play.

United are in for a tough season on this evidence and Paul Heckingbottom will be busy in the last few weeks of the window to try and bolster his threadbare squad.

  2. 'Luton lucky to get away with four'published at 17:14 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    FT: Brighton 4-1 Luton

I think it should have been more goals for Brighton.

Luton were very naive in thinking they could go there and try to take on Brighton.

Brighton hit the woodwork acouple of times, missed numerous chances and Luton were lucky to get away with four.

  3. 'Bowen has got better and better'published at 17:12 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    FT: Bournemouth 1-1 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham captain Kurt Zouma: "Tough game today. We could have done better for their goal but it's the first game of the season, we're happy to have a draw.

"Your legs feel tired on the first game of the season. They made it tough for us. We had another chance to score. It is what it is. We need to get a win next week.

"As soon as he [Jarrod Bowen] started kicking the ball I knew it was a goal. I was standing right behind him. I've seen him get better and better every game since I've been here.

"We deserved the three points today."

Newcastle v Aston Villa (17:30 BST)

The goals finally came after a slow start to this afternoon's fixtures, but this late kick off should be a cracker.

Two teams who secured European football for this season and will have aspirations of finishing high up the table once again.

  5. 'Couldn't take your eyes off it'published at 17:07 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    FT: Bournemouth 1-1 West Ham

It took something (or someone) special to turn a first half of mediocrity of missed chances into a game you couldn’t take your eyes off.

Jarrod Bowen’s 25 yard screamer into the top left of Bournemouth’s goal grabbed this game by the scruff of the neck for both sides.

The Cherries responded by sending a similar screamer to the cross bar. And when Dominic Solanke rounded the keeper to get their equaliser, the locals could see the expansive football they’ve been promised can bear fruit.

  6. 'Score doesn't reflect the game'published at 17:05 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    FT: Brighton 4-1 Luton

    Steve Sidwell
Former Villa and Brighton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think the Brighton fans were expecting a comfortable win but the scoreline does not reflect the game today.

It doesn't show how disciplined and dilligent Luton were, great defensive effort. They do that throughout the season and they will pick up points.

Their home form has to be strong if they are to retain their Premier League status this season.

Everton will finally get the drop this season, you can’t keep flirting with relegation before you eventually hit the dropspot

Everton now comfortably leading the League of Monumental Misses. In that league, Maupay is better than Haaland. Only in that league.

Mike: It's quite common for us to say 'never change, Everton'. We don't mean it anymore. Please change, Everton.

Sheffield United fans are applauding their side off. They’ve been brilliant today,

    Their team? Less so.

Very much a case of hit and hope in attack, with Joachim Andersen barely needing to step out of third gear.

Defensively they were caught out, and, without Berge, there was very little in midfield. Palace were by no means brilliant, but they didn’t need to be.

  12. 'Plenty of positives still for Luton'published at 16:54 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    Brighton 4-1 Luton

    Steve Sidwell
Former Villa and Brighton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

A fourth Brighton goal is harsh on Luton, they've been very well disciplined.

As the game has worn on the substitutions and tiredness have made a few spaces [in the defence] and at this level you get punished.

There's still plenty of positives to take for Luton.

Everton's problem isn't that they need a striker, as almost every team in Europe does. It's more that Everton lack any forwards who can score. I still think they'll get 17th due to Dyche though
