    Newcastle 2-1 Aston Villa

Pau Torres is on then for his Aston Villa debut, replacing the injured Tyrone Mings, whose leg is strapped up pretty heavily before he is taken off on the stretcher.

That really doesn't look good for Mings and Newcastle fans stand along with Villa supporters to applaud him off the pitch.

We're still waiting to make the change but Tyrone Mings is definitely going to have to go off. He looks devastated as he is lifted onto a stretcher.

Diaby and Watkins are linking up very well and that is why Newcastle have had to defend quite a bit.

They've had some defending to do, but they'd HAD to do defending [because of Villa's threat].

Tyrone Mings' injury came after he went for the ball with Alexander Isak. He's still lying down on the pitch with a couple of the Aston Villa medical staff in attendance.

It looks like he's going to have to go off with Pau Torres getting ready to come on.

  5. 'Newcastle's physical midfield'published at 17:56 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

It does look a very physical midfield now. Bruno Guimaraes is physical, Tonali is too, and we know Joelinton is a big presence.

I think Newcastle fans are going to enjoy watching that midfield this season.

    Newcastle 2-1 Aston Villa

Douglas Luiz gets back to stop a Newcastle attack and then Aston Villa counter quickly. Moussa Diaby squares for Ollie Watkins but he shoots wide under pressure.

Tyrone Mings is down injured and this looks a real concern for Villa.

He had to be calm about it and make sure he caught it on the volley and put it back across.

Isak, a player who has had limited involvement in the game, had to be ready to apply the finish.

Early season pressure for Newcastle. They have to win as many games as possible before the CL starts as they are going to find it very difficult playing twice a week against top drawer opposition.

When they moved it on to the second phase, I knew it would be a goal.

2-1 and this game could be any scoreline.

Feel free to screenshot this entry later and send it to me with lots of laughing emojis but I can't see that being the end of the goals in this game. It could easily finish 5-4 to someone.

  14. goal

GOAL - Newcastle 2-1 Aston Villapublished at 16 mins

Cracking finish from a set piece!

The ball is played short to Sandro Tonali, who lofts the ball into the box and it is knocked back into the middle of the dangerzone by Sven Botman for Alexander Isak to score.

There's a long check by VAR for offside, but it stands!

Why has Emery played Mings and Konsa when we have Torres and Diego Carlos? Confused.

If you look at him and Guimaraes in midfield, that is a spectacular partnership there.
