  6. 'We have to keep positives going'published at 20:16 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Tottenham 2-0 Manchester United

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min to BBC Match of the Day: "Very good and very special obviously. It's a special opponent, and a first home win against United in this stadium so it was really, really good. But credit to the players they gave everything from the start to the end. Almost 100 minutes so I'm very happy."

On Spurs' trophy chances: "It's too early to talk, we still have so many games. The fans were fantastic, there's no doubt about it, but it's too early because we have to give everything. We never know for the end of the season but to win something we have to give everything for the shirt.

"It's very good and everyone is very positive, looking forward to playing for this team. We have to keep going with this positive energy, when we have a good time, but also, when we're not having a good time."

You'd expect Erling Haaland to do better here. Joelinton gives the ball to the Yorkshireman, who plays a one-two with Phil Foden before going wide and miscontrolling the ball over the byeline.

It is very tightly congested in the centre of midfield so Kyle Walker has been a useful outlet on the right for City a few times already in the opening minutes.

Anthony Gordon is tasked with keeping him under tabs, and has tracked back well when needed, but he is roaming forward too. That could turn out to be a key battle down that flank.

This game has not come to life yet, it's fair to say. Miguel Almiron puts Ederson under pressure. Well you'd think but Ederson never looks pressured.

  13. 'We have to look at ourselves to take our chances'published at 20:11 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Tottenham 2-0 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag speaking to Match of the Day: "We created the chances, the first half was completely ours and then you have to score. We created the chances but we didn't put them in the net.

"Also we deserved a penalty. We didn't get it, so you have to accept it. That's the way the game is. So it was not our day.

On chances created by both teams: "I think we created more chances, very good chances. I think we did very good pressing and high ball retains. We had the switches, created some great chances but didn't score.

"Then you have to stay focused. It started at the end of the first half, three unneccessary bookings and we conceded a big chance. Totally unneccessary.

"Then the second half the way we started was no good. But we did not collapse. We fought back.

On defending in the wide positions: "I think our wide players pressed quite well, but in moments they beat the press, and our players then have to do better to recover. But also they need support from the full backs and the sixes too, we need to coordinate that better.

Mount in the deeper role: "Yes that was the plan. We dominated them totally in the first half, especially in the midfield area. He was a very important part in that.

On receiving a yellow card at the end: "I made a comment, nice and polite, but the ref did not appreciate it.

On United's start to the campaign: "I see the start as a few more games. We are disappointed today. We have to look at ourselves to score our chances, and we did not. The first goal is very important in Premier League games."

  16. 'This is why we've signed a striker'published at 20:07 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Tottenham 2-0 Manchester United

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag to Sky Sports: "You make a face, you don't like the first half? I like the first half, it was a very good performance from Manchester United in the first half, except, we have to score.

"We created good chances, we had a really good press on the ball, we let them run, we had many good switches, we had many good chances to score a goal, and we deserved a penalty. I don't know why it's not. Absolutely a penalty. He changes the direction of the ball and his hand is blocking high above. But OK, you have to accept it.

"We quickly got three bookings, we had to stay focused, this can't happen, they were unnecessary bookings. And then we switched off. In one attack they had two big chances, they twice hit the post.

"The start of the second half was not good, it was totally unnecessary to concede the first goal, and from that moment on, it's the meaning of the first goal. But, we didn't collapse, but we didn't score.

"You have to keep composed and keep going. We have to keep working the ball instead of going to rush.

"When the opponent goes deeper you have to keep working the ball and then you can go more direct.

"I thought the midfield was good. But of course, you can always do better, but we go for goal and of course you leave gaps. But that had nothing to do with the midfielders, that was more to do with our rest defence.

"I am not concerned with our attacking play but I am by our scoring. We know this, that is why we've signed a striker. It is one game, on Monday the performance was not good but the result was there. Today the performance was OK but we have to win here. We take the positives, but also know to keep the belief.

"When you lose it's never good. You always have to look in the mirror and yes we have to score. We have to make the goal and quieten the crowd and opponent. In the first half it was so quiet in the stadium because we took away their belief. If you score, the game is ours."

On new signings: "It's not about adding to the team. It's about, we have to score goals."
