Those new lads for Manchester City are central midfielder Matheus Nunes, who they signed from Wolves on deadline day, and winger Jeremy Doku, who arrived from Rennes a few days prior.

Nunes had been absent from training for the Molineux club recently after making it clear he wanted to join Guardiola's side. And the 25-year-old got his wish to become another option for Pep in the middle.

Doku is lightning and will take the place in the City squad vacated by Riyad Mahrez this summer.

City also saw a man go out in high-profile circumstances on deadline day, with Cole Palmer joining Chelsea for an eyebrow raising £40m.

The young forward hadn't been starting, though, so that's not going to impact Pep's team selection a great deal. As with so many of Chelsea's recent signings, he's promise as opposed to finished product.

Fulham have had an inconsistent start to this season. They took all three points on opening weekend, bagging a win over a wasteful Everton at Goodison Park, then had their behinds handed to them by Brentford at Craven Cottage. There was backbone on display at Arsenal last time out as they came back to snatch a point with 10 men.

They had a bit of a wild deadline day, signing a couple of players in Alex Iwobi from Everton and Fode Ballo-Toure on loan from AC Milan, Most importantly, though, they were able to hold on to Joao Palhinha, who saw a move to Bayern Munich fall apart.

This tricky second season has yet to settle for them and their taking it on without last season's star striker Aleksandr Mitrovic. It'll be interesting to see how they fare today at a ground that offers even the best of teams very little.

  3. 'The biggest jump in world football'published at 14:46 British Summer Time 2 September 2023

    Burnley v Tottenham (15:00 BST)

    John Bennett
BBC World Service Sport at Turf Moor

In his programme notes today, Burnley boss Vincent Kompany calls moving for the Championship to the Premier League “the biggest jump in world football".

It’s certainly proved tough for them so far but his message to the fans is that “we’ll get our moments, our goals and our wins.

Positive words but with three of their next four games against Manchester United, Newcastle and Chelsea this feels like a huge afternoon for his team.

Under the circumstances, it is not a surprise Palhinha is missing from the Fulham team sheet today.

He travelled to Munich, had his medical, posed for pictures in a Bayern shirt - and was then told the deal had not gone through.

The German transfer window closed a few hours before ours, so maybe if it had been open later, a resolution might have been found.

As it is, Palhinha must return to Fulham, who are a good club - but they are not Bayern Munich.

  5. Forest's troubles on the roadpublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 2 September 2023

Chelsea v Nottingham Forest (15:00 BST)

Turn your eyes away Nottingham Forest fans. These statistics do not make great reading at all.

    • Nottingham Forest have won just one of their 21 Premier League away games since their return to the division last season (Drawn five, Lost 15), going down 3-2 to Manchester United last time out despite going 2-0 ahead in just four minutes.
    • Nottingham Forest have won just one of their last 14 away games against Chelsea in all competitions (Drawn five, Lost eight) and are winless in nine since a 2-0 victory in January 1995.
    • Chelsea are unbeaten in their last nine meetings with Nottingham Forest in all competitions since a 2-0 loss in January 1997

Can anyone remember the goalscorers from those games in 1995 and 1997?

One was a prolific forward, one was nicknamed 'Psycho' and the other was a popular midfielder, who sadly died this summer.

It's all gone swimmingly for the champions at the start of their treble defence this season.

Three league games, three league wins.

They didn't have it easy at Bramall Lane last time out, though. As Everton have discovered today, the Blades are capable of causing a wound or two, and they almost snatched a point from City before Rodri's late winner sealed all three.

Another win today, against Fulham, and Pep Guardiola's side will leapfrog West Ham and take top spot.

They may also have a few new faces on show too in the process.

Best deal of the window? Everyone is going to look at Ansu Fati to Brighton but I'm going with Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest to Spurs.

Very, very, late piece of business but it is a great deal, and I think he has got so much more to give.

He did so well at Forest that I think he is just going to go on and on and on. Spurs will suit him perfectly.

  8. Pep wishes he was herepublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 2 September 2023

Man City v Fulham (15:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the Etihad Stadium

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola will not be physically present at the Etihad Stadium today following his back surgery.

But he has still done the programme notes for the game.

"There is only one place I wish I was today, inside our stadium with all of you," he says.

"I cannot wait for the next game so I can be there."

City's next game in this stadium is against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League on 19 September.

Burnley won in the EFL Cup, a good away win against Nottingham Forest, albeit they've lost their first two league games against Manchester City and Aston Villa. They play a really attractive brand of football - that's all very well but they need points to back it up.

I don't think they'll get the points against Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham. He'll go full strength - he played a weakened side in the EFL Cup - and I think they'll edge this game.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-2

Liz: Remarkable from Pickford. Showing how he's the unluckiest and luckiest keeper in the PL. Desperate for that OG, poor fella. And then nearly pushes the ball into his own net, just barely hitting the bar instead, and then another save. Amazing. Who'd be a Toffee eh?

Armchair fan: That is an incredible save. Unreal. Might be broadly overrated but that was special from Pickford

Ryan at 13:42 - that is why Pickford plays for England. Stunning saves every week. haven’t seen him ‘flap’ in years!

Unbelievable I do not know how it has stayed out, it was a triple save [on Pickford's saves at the end].

It was a great game of football, amazing to think this game was in September, it was played in the right way.

  15. FULL-TIMEpublished at 14:32 British Summer Time 2 September 2023

    Sheffield United 2-2 Everton

Both Sheffield United and Everton pick up their first point of the season.

The visitors went ahead through Abdoulaye Doucoure, only for the hosts to score through Cameron Archer and then a Jordan Pickford own goal.

But Arnaut Danjuma's goal made it 2-2 and a draw.

Pickford saved Everton though in the ninth minute of injury time with a wonder save to deny Oliver McBurnie what would've been the most dramatic of dramatic winners.

    Sheffield United 2-2 Everton

Absolutely brilliant save from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, to keep out Oliver McBurnie's close-range header.

McBurnie headed down powerfully, the ball sprung up, Pickford somehow pushes it on to the underside of the bar, then saves the follow-up effort too.

Fabien @ 14:12 Very optimistic of you to think those players will come back all at the same time and then stay injury free for a good string of games!

    Adam, Sheffield

Oh dear Fabien.. that is certainly a list (minus DCL who is more injury prone than Darren Anderton) that would not look out of place in the Championship. Don’t think they’re going to be quite as season defining as you think they are!

Everton's James Tarkowski takes a shot full in the face, brave defending, but effective.

That's Tarkowski's last action as he is replaced by Ben Godfrey.

Six minutes of injury time for any late drama.
