On the teams performance: "We frustrated them at times. We were diligent in our defensive work, and created chances in the 2nd half. We stayed solid as a mid block."

On Villa's penalty: "It killed it for us. It's never been a pen for me. Under the pressure, it's gone the wrong way."

On the overall score: "It's a tough and bitter pill to swallow, certainly that big decision went against us."

Newcastle will have aspirations of a top six finish this season and while it is far too early to have alarm bells ringing, they will be looking at this game as three points a must.

Eddie Howe's side currently have three from four games, are three points behind their opponents today and seven off the top six.

The two teams are in the tunnel and ready to head out.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to MOTD: "It was great to be fair. We hoped to be really strong at home. In the Premier League you need to be strong at home.

"We are creating a winning mentality at home. We couldn't score in the first half but we kept going forward and won at the end of the day.

"No matter what happens in the game I need to keep my team in the game, that's my job. But I knew we were going to score.

"That was a hit to be fair! Jhon [Duran] is growing in confidence and you can see that today."

Aston Villa

Aston Villa goalscorer Douglas Luiz speaking to Premier League Productions: "It was a crazy moment and crazy game. They are a good team but we believed in ourselves."

On Jhon Duran's first goal: "He is so good, and so young, I couldn't believe that goal."

On playing at home: "It's always so special, the fans are great and they always believe in us."

Sean: Gotta love this extra extra extra time. Brings plenty of drama (unless you’re a Sheffield Utd or a Crystal Palace fan).

Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen to BBC Match of the Day: "It is a heavy one. We have to look at ourselves. We changed some things but we are disappointed.

"In the first half we had a lot of moments, had good control. They had a lot of possession but not many chances. They then score with their first chance and the system they play they keep the ball a lot and we had to chase it down. But we still had chances to get back into the game."

On what needs to be done to turn things around: "The small things. We had the offside at Arsenal and today when we scored but it was out of play. The small things we are missing and a bit of luck to get over the line and get something out of the effort we put in.

"Any game at the start of the season, doesn't matter who you play, is very important. We focus on our games and whoever we play we want to win. But we have lost three already and we have to change that."

Brentford are winless in eight league games against Newcastle since beating them 1-0 at home in the second tier in January 1948 (D1, L7).

The Bees' only away victory against the Magpies was by 5-2 in the second tier on 1 September 1934.

Newcastle were the only team to win both Premier League fixtures against Brentford last season: 5-1 at home and 2-1 away.

Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to BBC Sport: "All game we played a fantastic game. Even when we were losing against at half-time against an incredible side who is very good at set-pieces. We were efficient, we were patient in the second-half. It was a big win after the international break. The team showed good spirit to survive."

On returning after back surgery: "I'd prefer to be here than to do a surgery that's for sure."

On Jeremy Doku: "I would say that the first game he was shy and today he was not, it was an unbelievable game. He was a proper winger, have the ball, have the ability to go 1v1. Not just that, he has the quality to read when to make the pass for the next player. I was very happy, it was a very good performance from Jeremy."

On the return of the Champions League: "We are used to it. Now it's rest, Champions League - defending the crown. Game by game, now we start recovery and everybody will be ready."

Chris: Two wins, three losses from United’s first 5 games. And the two wins were heavily dependent on iffy referee decisions. Relegation candidates?

Dan: Brighton heading for Champions League football this season. What a team and what a manager. They could have had 6 or 7 against United today.

What a brilliant game of football!

The scoreboard reads 3-1 City with, of course, Erling Haaland bagging again. But the truth of it is West Ham played their part in a breathless 90 minutes, somehow soaking up chance after chance after chance, and for a short time led the Treble winners.

'Smash and grab' was what the Hammers here were talking up pre-match, as they'd done against Brighton before the International break.

Haaland pretended to collapse as a goal celebration after finally getting the ball past Alphonse Areola. The West Ham keeper was simply awesome all afternoon and unlucky to be on the losing team.

After three straight defeats, Newcastle need a result against Brentford on Saturday ahead of their first Champions League fixture of the season next week.

A deserved Villa win. Even when they went behind to Odsonne Edouard's goal early in the second half, you just knew they would come back. Unai Emery's substitutions made the difference.

Jhon Duran's super half-volley drew them level, Douglas Luiz's penalty made it 2-1 after Ollie Watkins was fouled by Chris Richards in the box. Leon Bailey sealed the deal from Moussa Diaby's cut-back and that was that.

Villa are going places under manager Emery.

Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele to Premier League production: "It feels great. A great win. Away at Old Trafford, it is an amazing feeling. We deserved it too, we played with courage, with a big heart and definitely deserved to win.

"We want to play on the front foot, aggressive, United played a bit different to what we expected, so we had to get to grips with that. But after 10-15 minutes we settled down and got a foothold in the game."

On making six changes and still winning: "It doesn't happen in the Premier League very often but we believe it each other. The manager believes in us more importantly. We know how it is going to be this season but we trust him 100%.

"We are a team of good guys who fight for each other and we have a leader in our boss who gives us good information."

On rotating in goal with Bart Verbruggen: "it's different but it is what it is, He's the boss. He changed my life last season, by having trust and faith in me, so whatever he wants from me I'll give him."

Manchester City

Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku to Premier League productions: "I think we reacted very well. We had a lot of chances in the first-half without scoring but we kept on going. They score a goal, I had bad touch so I was disappointed. We reacted well and kept on playing and after that we scored three goals and had a good game."

On his first City goal: "(It meant) a lot, especially after their goal because it came of me. I wanted to do something back, something good, and I helped the team which I'm glad about."

On his battle with Vladimir Coufal: "I enjoyed it, I had a lot of 1 v 1's. The manager said to try this to bring a lot of players to me and it worked. I enjoyed the game against him of course."

On manager Pep Guardiola: "He said the first game I was al ittle bit shy but now no. As he said, I was a little bit less shy today."

Oliver: As an Arsenal fan I'm made up for Richarlison, takes courage to play through off field issues. Hats off to a player that takes a lot of unnecessary abuse.
