  2. 'We got trolled' with penalty decisionpublished at 20:25 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Brentford

    Brentford

Brentford's boss Thomas Frank to BBC Match of the Day: "I think it's important to look at what we can affect and analyse and that's our performance. I think we performed very well up here, it takes a lot of character to perform here. We performed and tried to win. I think it was a very even game.

"I think we were very close and we could have won it. Unfortunately it was decided by a decision that had nothing to do with the two teams, just the ref. But in terms of character, willpower, the way we pressed and played, we could have won this game.

"I don't think it's a penalty. We got trolled in a similar situation a some weeks ago against Tottenham when Kevin Schade was through, clear contact with the keeper took him out but apparently he (the keeper) pulled out before. And they also talked about a situation between Arsenal and Manchester City but that was penalty awarded.

"But going forward these should not be penalties. We have a keeper clearly pulling out and a player cleverly letting his leg hang there. It's not a penalty.

"If the assistant didn't take the decision, it should 100% be humans making the decisions like that, then I'm convinced that VAR would not have overturned the decision, so I think that's a problem.

"But because it's not clear and obvious, it's too tight. Now we will have a situation where Howard Webb will come out and apologise about the situation and say 'we're sorry', I just think it's too many time but it can happen."

  3. 'I'm very very pleased with the performance'published at 20:23 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Brentford

    Brentford

More from Brentford boss Thomas Frank to Sky Sports: "I think we had three or four big moments where it's margins that make us have a clear cut 100% chance or big moment. I think we had more of those than Newcastle. I'm very very pleased with the performance."

On the injury to Rico Henry: "It's a knee injury we think. It will assessed over the next days, Hopefully it's not too bad but I don't know."

On responding to this defeat: "Of course we need a reaction. One of the things with us is we're very consistent with our performances and how we do things. Now is the fifth game in a row we've performed well or very well and if we keep doing that we will win more games."

  4. 'This is a fantastic stadium and atmosphere but it does affect decisions'published at 20:20 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Brentford

    Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank to Sky Sports: "First and foremost I would say I think we played a very good game. Everyone knows it's difficult to come here.

"The way we performed was very impressive, it was an even game where we could have won it. That's why t's frustrating to stand here with it decided by a decision I think is wrong.

"Normally I would never complain about penalties but this time I think it was the wrong decision.

"It's because it's an on field decision, if they hadn't VAR would never have overturned that one.

"We were told when it happened to Kevin Schade against Tottenham in a similar situation with the 'keeper's coming out and he makes contact with the player but he's pulling out just before then it shouldn't be a penalty.

"I'm sure when the panel of referees looks at it Howard Webb will say sorry - that'll be even more frustrating.

"Of course we all do our best, I demand big character from my players and they showed it. I also demand big character from the refs. This is a fantastic home ground and atmosphere but it does affect decisions."

  5. 'It's a clear penalty'published at 20:17 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Brentford

    Newcastle United

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon to PLP: "Very crucial. It was one of those wins you grind out and do whatever you can to win the game and that's what we did.

"They play five at the back and cramp the middle of the pitch of and make it quite a boring game but that's what they do and it was up tp us to penetrate them and we did that."

On the penalty he won: "From what I can remember it was a lose ball and I've reacted first, sprinted, got their first and the keeper wiped me out. I was delighted when he wiped me out.

"I don't understand if there is any controversy because he clearly wipes me out. I get their first he wiped my foot and it's a clear penalty."

  6. 'We were determined to bounce back'published at 20:11 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Brentford

    Newcastle United

More from Newcastle manager Eddie Howe to Sky Sports: "I think there was a lot of relief in our emotions at the end. It wasn't a fantastic performance from us but it was a determined one, a gritty one. It was one that wanted to show our response from the Brighton performance.

"I think we've seen that, a clean sheet, a massive three points, and now we can move forward.

"When you're manager of this football club you can't lose games on a consistent basis, it can't become a habit. We are determined to bounce back from the three defeats and that's the Premier League, there's no easy fixtures.

"Today was a tricky one for us, Brentford are a really good team. We stayed in the game and in the second half we were a lot better.

"I'm really pleased with the focus, we know how important the Premier League is for us.

"I only look at the next game and pick the team to win that. Whether the team changes for Tuesday night (against AC Milan) who knows."

  7. 'Big result for us'published at 20:06 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Brentford

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe to BBC Sport: "Big result for us. Difficult game today, knew it was gonna be. Brentford are a difficult team to play against. It wasn't a game of many chances didn't think, thankfully we got the important goal we needed.

"I don't think we were in full rhythm today but that's what Brentford do, they disrupt you. It was a bitty game for us, we had to set-pieces right, crosses right and defensively I was very pleased with us today."

On Elliot Anderson and Harvey Barnes: "I think they did really well. I'm happy Elliot got to start today because he deserved it. Harvey came into the team, performed well. They both did well in the international break and I have no problem putting them in."

On the penalty decision: "I have got no idea to be honest, I didn't see it at the time and I haven't seen it since.

On goalscorer Callum Wilson's new contract: "He is a leader in the group, a vocal presence, a positive guy and a goalscorer. Put them together and he's very important so I'm very happy he's staying with us."

  8. 'My mindset is to win every game'published at 20:00 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Brentford

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe to Sky Sports: "I did think it was a penalty I thought Anthony Gordon was taken out by the keeper. I've not had the benefit of replays but my instinct says it's a penalty."

On Tuesday's opponents AC Milan losing 5-1 to Inter Milan today: "I've just heard, I don't know whether that's a good thing for us or not. I need to watch that game and analyse it and we'll try to give a good performance.

"I think my mindset is to try and win every game. Whether that's in the Premier League, the Champions League, the Carabao Cup or the FA Cup, they're all important.

"There's no preference to any competition, and in my mind the league form is so important. You're judged over 38 games."

  9. 'A tough one to take'published at 19:57 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Brentford

    Brentford

Brentford's Christian Norgaard to Premier League Productions: "Disappointed of course, I thought we played a really good game here and made it really hard for Newcastle.

"We could have taken something away from here so it's a tough one to take.

"We had big chances in the second half where we could have gone in front, before they got their soft penalty.

"I heard the referee say 'not for me, not for me' so maybe the assistant gave it. I just think in a game like this it is not the right decision.

"It's frustrating of course, you come here as the underdogs and this small decision turns it. It's a tough one to take."

  10. 'It's about time I got a start'published at 19:51 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Brentford

    Newcastle United

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson to Premier League productions: "It (the win) was massive. The break probably came at a good time for us, we were on a run of defeats and needed back to winning ways. The break got us to regroup, we worked on a few things we had to improve. We had to win ugly and three points were the most important today."

On any nerves before the match: "I don't think in the dressing room or the squad. We have full belief in ourselves and each other. For the fans yes because last time we were here we were 1-0 up in the 90th and conceded two late goals. You can understand that anxiousness but when we were 1-0 up today we had to stay professional, see it out and we did that thankfully."

On his disallowed goal: "Obviously I jumped up with the goalkeeper, challenging as you do. I think they get a little bit too much protection from the goalkeepers. At corners, they're pushing you but if you touch them back it's a foul."

On his penalty: "Pressure is for tyres. For me, practice in training and on a matchday you've done it so many times and it's just repetition, stay composed and that's what I did."

On the Champions League coming up: "Today was the only thing in my mind. We know next week is a big week for the fans and the club but this is our bead and butter, If we want to stay a Champions League club we have to win these games."

On starting the game: "It's about time I got a start, I've been waiting for the last few weeks. All I can do is perform and try and do myself justice. I tried to help the team to win ugly today and as a number nine that's our job."

Paul: Newcastle’s disallowed goal should have counted, their penalty was never a penalty and the second penalty while rightly overturned shouldn’t have been given to start with. VAR won’t improve the game while it’s the same incompetent clowns running it.

  18. YELLOW CARDpublished at 90+6 mins

    Newcastle 1-0 Brentford

Callum Wilson is booked, presumably for timewasting. He certainly looks a bit confused as to why he got a yellow card.

Oh it was a two-for-one booking as Anthony Gordon was also penalised for dissent.

    Regardless, Newcastle are almost there...
