  1. 'Crazy that Spain have not won a knockout game'published at 08:27 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Fara Williams
Former England midfielder on BBC Two

On Spanish players dispute with their federation: "When something like this happens and you want to make a stand, I think it's important that you stand together. When players go off and do their own thing and players come back into the squad, some players don't sign things, and stick by each other, this is what happens.

"It's not what we want, it's not what we want to be talking about during the World Cup, we want the best players to be on show. Spain with all the talent they have within their squad, to think that Spain have not won a knockout game with the amount of talent they have is crazy.

"I would have liked to see the best pool of players in the Spanish squad because I actually think they can go and win the World Cup if they had that."

Costa Rica held Spain in their opening game at the 2015 World Cup but I can't see them getting anything out of them this time.

Spain's target is to top this group so they will want to put down an early marker. I can see them doing that by scoring a few goals.

    Brown-Finnis's prediction: 4-0

Spain boss Jorge Vilda: “We want to go as far as we can and make history. We’re ambitious.

"I know there’s a lot of expectation around us but that’s a privilege because it reflects what the players and the team have achieved. We’re going to fight to be right up there.

"How we attack depends on how we press; if we press well, we attack well. And at the big tournaments, it’s the teams that defend well that go far. That’s what we’re aiming for."

Spain are making their third appearance at the Women's World Cup, having failed to progress beyond the group stage in 2015 they reached the last 16 four years later.

Preparations have been far from ideal for this tournament with the dispute between manager and 15 players, but some of those have since returned to the international fold, including Barcelona's Aitana Bonmati and Ona Batlle.

Despite that disrupted build-up off the pitch, they won six successive games going into the World Cup and are among the favourites to lift the trophy for the first time.

The second game this morning saw Switzerland open their 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over debutants the Philippines.

Ramona Bachman's penalty late in the first half opened the scoring for the Swiss before Seraina Piubel doubled their lead with a close-range effort in the 64th minute.

After a bright start for the Philippines, Katrina Guillou thought she had scored her nation's first World Cup goal when she found the back of the net after 16 minutes, but it was swiftly ruled out for offside.

The result moves Switzerland to the top of Group A, above co-hosts New Zealand on goal difference.

    Canada 0-0 Nigeria

Earlier, Christine Sinclair missed out on becoming the first player to score at six Fifa World Cups as Canada were held to a goalless draw by Nigeria.

Nigeria keeper Chiamaka Nnadozie kept out Sinclair's spot-kick early in the second half as the Olympic champions were frustrated in Melbourne.

Deborah Abiodun was sent off late on for Nigeria, however they earned a point with a battling display.

Canada and Nigeria have one point in Group B, behind co-hosts Australia.

Preparations for the Fifa Women's World Cup were a bit tumultuous for Spain.

A drawn-out dispute between manager Jorge Vilda and 15 members of the national team saw those players make themselves unavailable for selection.

But Spain are now looking to put that behind them and - led by Ballon d'Or holder Alexia Putellas - they are determined to go further than ever before at this summer's tournament.
