Despite lacking that all-important win, the Irish fans have been superb this entire tournament and will be giving it everything in the stands tonight.

They were louder than the Australians in the opener despite being outnumbered 10 to one, and Perth was effectively an extension of Dublin, such was the swell of Irish support against Canada.

The roar when Katie McCabe opened the scoring is something that everyone in attendance will remember for a long, long time.

After a walk around South Bank in Brisbane earlier it's safe to say we can expect the same again, with green jerseys everywhere you look as they soak in the glorious sunshine.

The Nigerian support, albeit in a much smaller number, made themselves heard against Australia too so this should be a festival of sea and colour.

Melbourne Rectangular Stadium is rather dwarfed by its giant neighbour - the 100,000-seater Melbourne Cricket Ground, sat the other side of the railway line.

Last night the MCG was lit up for an Aussie Rules meeting between Melbourne and Richmond. You could hear the roars from the crowd from Rectangular Stadium.

Waiting to cross the road to the stadium, the two Australia fans next to me were discussing how weird it was that such a big game was being played at such a relatively small venue - 30,000 seats.

It shows how overshadowed women's football can be by other sports in Australia - and how much the Matildas need to win this game to keep home interest in the World Cup alive.

If I'm a centre-back and Sam Kerr is playing on one leg then maybe I'd fancy my chances against her.

I just don't know how fit she will be - I've never heard of a calf injury that takes just a week to heal.

It was serious enough for the Australia camp to keep everything secret, and she missed the start of the open training session [before this game].

Not just for Australia but for the World Cup as a whole it is a massive disappointment to be missing Sam Kerr.

She is the poster girl of this tournament and for her to not be playing it is a real shame.

Brisbane Stadium is filling up nicely ahead of kick-off and it's no surprise that it's largely Irish fans making the noise.

They have followed their team in numbers from Sydney to Perth and now Brisbane. They've been unbelievable and deserve a strong result to end their tournament on a high.

There are also plenty of gold Australia shirts, who will no doubt have an eye on proceedings in Melbourne as well as the game in front of them tonight.

The Nigerian fans seem to be congregating to the right of their dugout and will be hoping the Super Falcons can finish the job and progress from Group B.

    Rachel Brown-Finnis

BBC Sport football expert Rachel Brown-Finnis is predicting the outcome of all 64 games in Australia and New Zealand. Here is what she had to say about this game...

The Republic of Ireland are out, but they have competed so well, exactly the way I was hoping they would.

Nigeria, meanwhile, have surpassed all expectations - including my own - but fully deserve to be top of Group B. From what we've seen so far, no-one will want to play them in the last 16.

A draw would be enough to send Nigeria through no matter what happens elsewhere, and the Republic would be happy with that outcome too, because it would give them their first World Cup point. 0-0.

  7. 'It will be a disaster'published at 10:46 British Summer Time 31 July 2023

    Canada v Australia (11.00 BST)

    Emma Smith
BBC Sport at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium

There is a feeling of hoping for the best but preparing for the worst among the Australian journalists in the media centre - and an acceptance that the co-hosts going out would be a "disaster".

"It is do or die, which is a situation they usually love but not a situation you want to be in," Anna Harrington of the Australian Associated Press told me earlier.

"You can't overlook the impact of Sam Kerr being out. It has been the biggest talking point ever since. She's the captain, she takes pressure off the other forwards. If you're playing without your best player, that is obviously going to hurt Australia.

"You can't necessarily say things would have turned out differently, but it has cast a shadow over the first few weeks."

Anna has covered the Matildas for 10 years and says the game will continue to grow and thrive thanks to hosting the tournament - but the exit of the hosts would be very damaging.

"I've worked at games where there were a few thousand, then you had more than 80,000 against the Irish and 50,000 the other night [against Nigeria].

"But they need to get through for it to really kick on. If they go out tonight, it will be a disaster."

    Brisbane Stadium at sunset

The sun is setting in Brisbane and it's about to set on the Republic of Ireland's World Cup campaign.

It's hard to imagine how the Irish players feel ahead of tonight's game.

There was so much build-up to this historic tournament and, after a rollercoaster ride over the past two weeks, now it will come to an end in 90 minutes.

There have been plenty of positives to take for this team, who have been in camp together for more than 50 days, and the foundations have definitely been built for future success.

Katie McCabe's wonder goal has ensured a standout moment that will be replayed for years to come, but there is still a sense of disappointment that the team hasn't achieved more by getting that all-important win.

They'll be hoping that can change tonight and will be giving absolutely everything to do so.

    Rachel Brown-Finnis

BBC Sport football expert Rachel Brown-Finnis is predicting the outcome of all 64 games in Australia and New Zealand. Here is what she had to say about this game...

Australia will be devastated that they come into their final group game needing to beat Canada, when they were expected by many to be safely into the last 16 by now.

Canada have not looked at their sharpest so far, but they are still very experienced in situations like this and the Matildas will need everything to come together if they are going to beat them.

I don't think it will be straightforward at all for the co-hosts, but I am going to go with my heart and say they will make it - the tournament really needs them to get through too. 1-2.

Maybe Sam Kerr's saving herself for the final 20 minutes of this match?

No point warming up now if you're going to wait 70 minutes to get on.

I might be being slightly too optimistic there. But it seems too soon to tell.

    Canada v Australia (11:00 BST)

    Rachel Corsie
Scotland and Aston Villa defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

We do need to bear in mind that we don't know the full extent of Sam Kerr's injury, calf issues can be niggly and hard to settle down. But, the position that Australia are in playing Canada, Olympic Champions, it is not a good situation and they have to win.

They know that if they don't they are going home. For that reason you play Sam Kerr, and you get whatever you can from her.

If she can only play 20 minutes, that could possibly be worth it if she gets you a chance or she gets you a goal. Ultimately, if she had her boots on today [training for the first time since the injury] and she feels like she can give it a go, you have to go for it.

For sure Australia have missed Sam Kerr. She is one of the best strikers in the world and has just had another terrific season at Chelsea. Things have been kept hush hush around her, we don't know the extent of the injury or the timescale for her recovery.

As a player at a World Cup you want to play, but I am scared that the long term picture may not be being looked at. She is the face of this World Cup, a home tournament, and if she doesn't play some part it would be a travesty.

If they do risk her and something happens and she does do more damage to her calf, that could turn into a long-term injury and impact the start of next season for her and for Chelsea.

Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, from the outside, doesn't appear particularly rectangular. Reminds me more of the Eden Project, for those back in the UK who understand that reference.

It hosted Canada's first game of the World Cup too, where they drew 0-0 with Nigeria. A similar result tonight would suit Bev Priestman's team fine, and send them into the round of 16.

Australia meanwhile will hope for goals, just as there were in the other game held here before today - when Germany beat Morocco 6-0.

    Group B

Canada v Australia is shaping up to be a big one, with either the Olympic champions or the hosts set to go out - although they could both still go through.

If Australia exit, that would be both the hosts out, with New Zealand left disappointed on Sunday.

Nigeria and Canada both go into their final games only needing a point to go through, and Australia chasing the win. A draw would be enough for the Matildas if the Republic of Ireland, who are already eliminated, beat Nigeria by two goals.

The Irish have just pride to play for - and a first Women's World Cup win - after losing both matches narrowly so far in battling performances against higher-ranked sides.

  17. TEAM NEWS - Oshoala starts; Payne returnspublished at 10:33 British Summer Time 31 July 2023

Republic of Ireland v Nigeria (11:00 BST)

As expected, Vera Pauw has gone with a strong side as the Republic of Ireland round out their World Cup campaign.

Heather Payne, who was set to start against Canada before pulling out of the warm-up, has recovered from a hamstring injury and replaces Aine O'Gorman at right back.

Midfielder Lily Agg comes in for Lucy Quinn in the Republic's other switch.

Republic of Ireland XI: Brosnan, Payne, Fahey, Louise Quinn, Connolly, McCabe (c), Littlejohn, O'Sullivan, Agg, Farrelly, Carusa.

Subs: Moloney, Walsh, O'Riordan, Mustaki, Caldwell, Barrett, O'Gorman, Lucy Quinn, Larkin, Sheva, Grant, Atkinson.

For Nigeria, their hopes have been boosted by the return of Asisat Oshoala.

The Barcelona forward has been nursing an injury and was only fit enough for a cameo off the bench against Australia, but even then she had a big impact and netted the decisive goal.

That's the one change Randy Waldrum has made for tonight's game, with Ifeoma Onumonu dropping to the bench.

Nigera XI: Nnadozie, Plumptre, Ohale, Payne, Oshoala, Ucheibe, Kanu, Demehin,Ajibade, Ayinde, Alozie.

Subs:Oluehi, Balogun, Ogbonna, Ebi, Onumonu, Oparanozie, Monday, Ordega, Echegini, Imuran, Okoronkwo.

    Canada v Australia (11.00 BST)

Christine Sinclair returns up front for Canada in place of Evelyne Viens in their only change from the side which beat Republic of Ireland.

Sinclair, 40, is looking to be the first player of any gender to score in six World Cups.

Canada XI: Sheridan; Riviere, Buchanan, Gilles, Lawrence; Quinn, Grosso; Leon, Fleming, Huitema; Sinclair

Subs: Awujo, Carle, Chapman, D'Angelo, Lacasse, Prince, Proulx, Rose, Schmidt, Smith, Viens, Zadorsky

The big news for Australia is that Sam Kerr is only fit enough for the bench.

Matildas captain Kerr declared herself fit for selection earlier this week after missing the first two matches with a calf injury.

There is just one change to the XI from the side which lost 3-2 to Nigeria, with Mary Fowler - having recovered from a concussion in training - replacing Cortnee Vine.

Australia XI: Arnold; Carpenter, Hunt, Kennedy, Catley; Raso, Cooney-Cross, Gorry, Fowler; Van Egmond, Foord

Subs: Williams, Nevin, Luik, Polkinghorne, Vine, Wheeler, Chidiac, Micah, Yallop, Simon, Kerr, Grant

Good morning and welcome to the live text commentary for the Women's World Cup Group B finale.

Two games, one kick-off time, both shown live on the BBC - and things are so tight.

Will Nigeria secure a spot in the knockouts for just the second time in six tournaments?

Can co-hosts Australia sneak through or will it be Olympic champions Canada progressing to the next round?

And what about the Republic of Ireland? Can they end the tournament with a win.

    Let's do this!
