Sweden produced a magnificent performance to book a semi-final date with Spain and leave Japan's Women's World Cup dreams in tatters.

Japan were seen as title contenders after gliding through the group stage and defeating Norway in the last 16.

Here, they fell behind to Amanda Ilestedt's goal before Manchester City midfielder Filippa Angeldahl doubled Sweden's lead from the penalty spot.

Japan were awarded a controversial penalty, but Riko Ueki's 76th-minute attempt hit the bar, before West Ham's Honoka Hayashi pulled a goal back in the 87th minute.

That lifeline came moments after Aoba Fujino hit the woodwork from a free-kick, but Sweden saw the game out to make it into the last four.

David: Justice served with the missed pen. Such a blatant dive and appalling that a) it was given and b) VAR didn't ask for it to be overturned. What is the point of VAR if it doesn't correct plain and obvious errors?

Lee: That penalty award to Japan just showed it is not VAR in itself fans find so frustrating, it's the inconsistent use of it by the officials.

I said before the tournament if one of the favourites, like the Germans or Americans, didn't get to the final, we would have a new name on the trophy.

I felt like it was going to be this tournament. All the teams are so much closer now in terms of the ability within their teams.

Given the entertainment that this Japanese team have given us through this tournament, they just didn't turn up today.

It's so frustrating because we have all been sitting here waxing lyrical about this team, their technical ability, their intelligence.

How the game ended with this Japanese side showing their flair and attacking, that's what we needed from the start.

It was all wrong for Japan today.

It's heartbreak for Japan as they miss out on third World Cup semi-final.

The 2011 winners will not get their hands back on the trophy this time.

Could it come down to this missed penalty from Riko Ueki?

Sweden have been a strong squad and they've come in this tournament with nobody putting them in among the favourites to win it.

They've dismantled a very good and adaptable Japanese team in style today.

Japan left it way too late to try and get themselves back into the game and the game really should have been over before the half.

Japan are charging forward, but they are clearly tired and the quality on the final ball just isn't there.
