    HT: Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool are depleted by injuries but have reminded everyone that the hosts aren't the only ones who can be spurred on by this atmosphere.

They've grown in confidence and are a little unfortunate not to be ahead, although Rachael Laws has produced several good saves.

Arsenal took a while to get going in their first game of last season, scoring three of their four goals against Brighton & Hove Albion after the break. They were helped on that occasion, though, by their opponents having a player dismissed after seven minutes.

FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Man Utd

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Carla Ward speaking to BBC Two: "We showed a lot of character to score with Rachel Daly's goal when we were a player short. And even then when they equalised we went to a 3-5-1 to get everyone up the pitch and to keep pushing forward

"We had a go today and I feel that pride in my players. They have done unbelievably well in the circumstances."

Manager Gareth Taylor oversaw a transition last season as several newcomers replaced the likes of England internationals Lucy Bronze, Keira Walsh and Georgia Stanway in City's starting XI.

They just missed out on Champions League football on goal difference. That was a big disappointment for them, even though their new signings needed time to settle.

It could be a similar story this season with United strengthening in the transfer window, and Chelsea and Arsenal growing in experience. City showed at times what they were capable of producing but they lacked ruthlessness at key stages last season.

They cannot afford similar slip-ups in 2023-24, but I'm not convinced they will remain consistent.

  20. 'The big calls have gone against us today'published at 14:56 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Man Utd

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Carla Ward speaking to BBC Two: "First and foremost I am very proud of my players today for that performance. Of course we are disappointed about the result. Big, big calls have gone against us today, and that hurts.

"In my opinion there is a clear red card when it was still 11 v 11, not sure about Kirsty's [Hanson] red card. You can question the corner that leads to the winning goal. Rachel Daly could have had a penalty. Should I continue or let the studio decide whether that is good enough for this division?

On if the decisions mentioned cost Villa today: " Of course they have. I am immensely proud of the players. I said to them at the end that if we can compete like that week in and week out we will be ok this season.

"It is disheartening and tough when the big calls go against you. I won't blame the officials, I think the powers that be need to provide more help to them and make them full time. It is something that we talk about all the time, so I am bored of discussing it now."
