Excluding goalless games, the scorer of the opening goal at a Women's World Cup final has gone on to win on five of seven previous finals.

Not the best news for England. Can the Lionesses break the trend?

Spain's road to the World Cup final has been full of goals. La Roja scored 53 without reply in eight qualifying games, while Olga Carmona's finish was their 18th at this tournament.

It's worth remembering that Spain's squad includes 17 players who are appearing at the World Cup for the first time.

There's a long, long way to go in this but, whatever the outcome, La Roja have given this tournament absolutely everything.

Salma Paralluelo has the last chance of the half. England are just not tight enough.

I think that will be the last action of the first half.

England break again and it's Alessia Russo with the attempt, cut out by Spain's solid defence.

It comes back out to Georgia Stanway on the edge of the area and you just felt sure she would have a go at that, she loves a long-range effort. Instead she opts to play backwards.

I think Ella Toone just strayed offside but what a break from England. Good line held by Spain.

What at time it would have been to get one back if England had done.

England have a chance to break. Alessia Russo skips down the right-hand side and plays a square ball across for Ella Toone who can't get close enough to get a decent shot on it and it's poked wide.

Agonisingly close but the Manchester United midfielder had just strayed offside, anyway.

They're living life on the edge though with Spain shirts all around them.

England need to get back to doing their basics really well.

I think there is an element of frustration kicking in for England, and understandably so, it is so hard to hold off a team that is dominating things on the edge of your area.

This half has absolutely flown by.

End to end stuff with Lauren Hemp hitting the bar and Olga Carmona opening the scoring. It feels like it's all Spain now.

Everything that Spain have set out to do, one-touch play and plenty of possession has worked so far.

England are completely prepared for having the other team dominate. They will just focus on their game plan, set out clearly by Sarina [Wiegman].
