  1. 'Wiegman has been incredible'published at 10:29 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    Spain v England (11:00 BST)

    Jonas Eidevall
    Arsenal manager on BBC One

In this tournament, Sarina Wiegman has been incredible because no doubt England came in with a team that was not really clicking.

She had played one formation with clear roles and responsibilities but she now had a different personnel to deal with and she has been so pragmatic, finding solutions, changing things.

In the end she changed the formation, she gave the players totally new roles like Lauren Hemp in a central forward position.

None of us thought about that before, I don't even know if Lauren Hemp imagined that she could play that position before the tournament started but she found a role to get the best out of Lauren Hemp and I think that's what great coaches do.

In the environment, Sarina Wiegman is very cool, calm and collected but I think for me personally what we have waited for for so long in a manager is someone that has great communication, someone that's honest, especially in a female environment, you want honesty, you want to know your roles and responsibilities.

Whether you're in the starting 11, whether you're on the bench, whether you're going to get no minutes. Feeling that you feel completely valued as an individual who she wants in the team because you have got a talent and you're here for a reason.

She values the players and that's why this team is so special. She takes each person individually and then creates a formation to make them flourish out on that pitch.

England captain Millie Bright on what she admires most about head coach Sarina Wiegman: "I think the biggest thing is almost her love for football and the team.

"We express ourselves and have the confidence to do that. We don't fear making mistakes. That is the biggest thing.

"Football is a beautiful game, but I think when you play it a bit hesitantly maybe you don't see the best in people.

"Since Sarina has come in we have had a real shift in confidence, playing the style of football that we want to play.

"I would like to think all the fans have seen that. We have played some of our best football [under Wiegman] and everyone is just loving every single minute of it."

The big decision for Sarina Wiegman for this World Cup final was whether to bring back Lauren James after her suspension for her red card against Nigeria.

She has stuck with Ella Toone.

The woman who so often gets the big calls right has gone with the same lineup as the last two games.

I was in Austria last September when England qualified for the World Cup with a 2-0 win in Wiener Neustadt thanks to goals by Alessia Russo and substitute Nikita Parris.

It was also the game Lauren James, then aged 20, made her senior debut for the Lionesses as a substitute after replacing Ella Toone in the 79th minute.

There was a swimming pool behind one side of the small ground with an orange water slide, an airfield across the road, while Sarina Wiegman and Millie Bright held a press conference in a marquee attached to the venue.

The crowd when England qualified in Austria was 2,600. There will be more than 75,000 in Stadium Australia as the Lionesses look to conquer the world by defeating Spain.

There is so much to do still. When we talk about battle, the battle feels like a fight but it has never been a case of women v men.

When we talk about equality, it is not about removing anyone, it is about being in the same space. The people in charge of the game, it is not about pushing the doors. I don't want to fight any more. Women's football is not in the shadows any more.

  11. 'Lionesses realising the dreams of every generation'published at 10:21 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    Spain v England (11:00 BST)

    Faye White
Ex-England captain on BBC Radio 5 Live

I've said this over the last few weeks and months.

If the Lionesses win this World Cup, they are not only realising their dreams, but they are realising my dream. They are doing it for every Lioness to have worn the shirt.

My generation did the best they could with the platform we had but these girls now have the platform to compete at the highest level, training day in, day out at their clubs.

We always knew we had talent, we always knew we were so close. We got to the Euros final in 2009 and have been getting to semi finals regularly in that and the World Cup.

I am proud of these girls. I know the weight you carry to promote the game when you are playing, and these girls will come back as national heroes no matter what the result is. That is all we dreamed of in my time.

Youngsters watching England today might just be starting to see England in finals as the norm. But it hasn't always been this way.

It's been a long old journey for the Lionesses to get here.

From being banned from playing football all together, to breaking new ground and changing attitudes and opinions, becoming European Champions and getting to a World Cup final.

On Lauren James impact: "First of all, I hope everyone who starts the game on the pitch will have an impact and we have a lot of players who can impact the game and we have to sub others. Of course really nice to have LJ on the bench too and if necessary she is ready."

On her final words to the players: "We've spoken about the plan of course and the strengths and weaknesses of Spain and how we want to play. What we mostly want to do is play our best game ever and also enjoy the moment because this is very very special."

At Croydon Boxpark, expectant fans are already taking their seats ahead of kick off.

It's a raucous atmosphere here - you certainly wouldn't know it's a morning kick off.

Fan zones like this have become synonymous with the England women's and men's team in recent years and the supporters who watch the matches here have seen plenty of success - but not a World Cup trophy lifted.

The hundreds here in England kits and draped in flags hope today is the day.

Mother Ellen Davies and daughters Laura and Emma are diehard England fans. They're quietly confident but “feel sick” with nerves.

A 2-1 England win is the consensus prediction among them- possibly capped off with the ultimate redemption goal from sub Lauren James.

“This is a huge deal”, Laura says.

“We were at the World Cup in France four years ago and the support was nothing like this. You can see how much it has grown even in four years.”

Emma says: “It’s a great atmosphere. It’s going to hurt if we lose but whatever the result we’ll be proud.”

  18. Excitement building in Madridpublished at 10:15 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    Spain v England (11:00 BST)

    Jenny Hill
    Reporting from Madrid

Thousands of fans are expected to cheer on the Spanish side at a public viewing centre in Madrid. Tickets to the fan zone (which were free) sold out within less than an hour. But while there is excitement that Spain has reached the final, the atmosphere is somewhat muted in the capital.

There are few – if any – displays of support for the national side in the city’s shops, bars and restaurants; illustration perhaps that a country traditionally obsessed by football has yet to be fully convinced by the merits of the women’s game.

Nevertheless, Queen Letizia of Spain is expected to be in Australia to watch the match in person, accompanied by one of her daughters. And Spain’s acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has told the players who are known as ‘The Reds’ that they "keep making history".

Today their fans hope that will continue.

It is just a game of football but I think what these women have done for the Lionesses in the last two years have been massive.

It's life changing today for them out there, a World Cup final. What us girls dreamed of.

They're going to make history whether they win or lose.
