From Keira Walsh being carried off injured in the group stage, to Lauren James' epic performance against China before being sent off against Nigeria, to having to come from behind to beat Colombia and then silencing co-hosts Australia to reach the final.
It's been a rollercoaster ride for England to get to this point.
For Spain, off field issues have been put to one side and there has been late drama in abundance with La Roja knocking out both the Netherlands and Sweden with late goals.
Read the full story of how both teams reached the final here.

ESPN football reporter Mark Ogden has been speaking to the Football Daily podcast about England's chances of winning the World Cup: "To overcome Australia at home and to overcome that tension was a massive step.
"Because the hype for the Australia game was so big I think England have already come through a bigger challenge to beat the host nation in Sydney."

Dave: In 1966 I nearly dropped my 12 week old sister when the fourth goal went in. Today I am at the Edinburgh Festival and if it goes beyond extra time I have a big clash with a show - so no dram girls think of the heart conditions amongst the 60+!
Nick: I'm so confident about this. We're about to see England win the World Cup! Football is about to come home.
Frank: England - see off the threat from Spain's wingers for the first half, then switch to 3-5-2 after half-time and run out as World Cup 2023 Winners, 1-3!

Here’s more from Beth Mead on BBC Radio 5 Live on whether she has been surprised that England have done so well despite missing some key players: “I’m not surprised. It’s been a great opportunity for players to step up, which is what they have done on the world stage.
“I know me, Leah [Williamson] and Fran [Kirby], and other girls, we would love to be with them now but they are doing it without us and that shows the signs of a great squad and strength within a squad.
“The girls have got themselves into the tournament really well and hopefully they can top it off with a performance today.”

England and Arsenal's Beth Mead, who has missed out on the World Cup with an ACL injury, has been on BBC Radio 5 Live before England's World Cup final against Spain: “Injury wise, I’m well on my way to recovering but nerves wise, I’m not doing so great.
“I text them yesterday. I know how much is going on in their brains now so I tried to get a text in early and not bombard them too much. They all seem to be in a great place - mental and physical - so they just want to get on that pitch and try and bring it home."

Throughout this tournament, but today more than ever, the injured trio of Leah Williamson, Beth Mead and Fran Kirby have come into my mind quite a lot.
They have been number one cheerleaders for England but of course it is heart breaking for them to be missing out having helped the Lionesses to European Championship glory last year.
Mead (England's top scorer at the Euros with six goals and five assists) and Williamson (England captain) are out with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. Kirby has had knee surgery and is out for a sustained period.

On Saturday Spain boss Jorge Vilda fielded questions from journalists around the issue of his squad.
His response to a journalist asking about how he has dealt with the unrest in the squad was: "Next question please."
In spite of all this, Spain are in the World Cup final but further questions around the issue will undoubtedly come after.
Spain v England (11:00 BST)
Many of you have probably heard about the controversy surrounding this Spain team but maybe you're not really sure what's happened or what it means. Let's bring you up to speed.
Many Spanish fans and journalists say they have felt conflicted about Spain's success at the World Cup. But why?
Back in September last year the Spanish football federation (RFEF) released a statement revealing that 15 players had submitted identical emails saying they would not play for manager Jorge Vilda unless "significant" concerns over their "emotional state" and "health" were addressed.
"Las 15", as the players became known, denied claims they had asked for Vilda to be sacked, but tension followed amid reports of concern over training methods and inadequate game preparation.
Several of those players returned to the playing group, but several high profile names did not. Three of the 15 who were frozen out of the set-up - forward Mariona Caldentey, midfielder Aitana Bonmati and defender Ona Batlle - were selected for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand.
Vilda has been noticeably absent from the immediate on-pitch celebrations with his players following their wins in the knockout stages.
It's a complex issue and one that has left much of Spain divided. Should Spain win the World Cup, there will be a slight shadow over it for some.

Neil: In 1966 I listened to the game on a transistor radio on a beach in the West country, I celebrated by going for a swim in the sea. This year I can watch on TV and have a glass of champagne to the winners, come on England bring it home.
Emma: Excited, nervous, hopeful. Regardless of the result, this group of exceptional ladies will go down in history. Good luck, Lionesses! We're all with you.

The sun is setting in Sydney and on Stadium Australia.
England's team bus has just arrived with the players coming out in light blue tracksuits ready to prepare for the biggest game of their lives.
Spain arrived a few minutes earlier and were dressed in smart navy blue suits with white shirts.
The stage is set inside the stadium and just in case you weren't sure, it says "The Final" on the big screens.

Prince William has wished England "good luck" in the Women's World Cup final, in a video alongside his daughter Princess Charlotte.
The Prince of Wales apologised for not flying to Australia to watch the Lionesses play in person.
"Lionesses, I want to send you a huge good luck for tomorrow, we're sorry we can't be there in person but we're so proud of everything you've achieved and the millions you've inspired here and around the world," he said.
"So go out there tomorrow and really enjoy yourselves."

Last night the Matildas ended their World Cup campaign with defeat to Sweden in the third-fourth play-off. It was the final time to Sydney Opera house would be lit up in their colours for the tournament.
Whether it will light up with the colours of the champions tonight is yet to be seen.
But Australia and New Zealand have proven to be wonderful hosts for the World Cup.
England have been made to feel very welcome, having cakes decorated in St George’s flags, messages of support and people stopping for selfies by the locals in Terrigal, where they have been based for the majority of the tournament.
Many Australians have told me they are cheering on England tonight despite their sporting rivalry in cricket, rugby and netball. They would rather have been knocked out by the champions than the runners-up.
Spain v England (11:00 BST)
England have looked pretty relaxed during all of their training, media responsibilities and preparations in the build up to this final.
I'm sure there will be some nerves jangling about now, though.
