England captain Millie Bright was asked if she was conscious of 1966 and what the players felt about this being their chance to take their place in history: "We live in the moment. Yes, it is a World Cup final, but for us it is just another game.

"Our preparations don't change, no matter the stage in the tournament, and for me that is key.

"The players will be allowed to prepare in any way they need to, like we normally do, and we have a game plan that we have to go out and execute.

"But I think everyone knows how big this is. I think it has been players' dreams for years. Everyone already knows that. Everyone knows how passionate our nation is back home and they want us to win, but for us there is a process of a game plan to execute. But yes, we need to play the game of our lives."

England defender Jess Carter says she is "the best version of herself" going into the Women's World Cup final.

Carter, 25, was a substitute as England won Euro 2022 but has started five of England's six matches in Australia.

The Chelsea centre-back has been integral to England's successful use of a back three during the tournament.

"It's been a bit mad, to be honest. Twelve months ago, I wasn't in the place I wanted to be in," said Carter, who now has 23 caps for England.

"I've had tremendous support from all the staff in terms of getting back to being the best version of me. I'm back to a place where I want to be and you can see it in my performances."

Rhianna: I think we’re about to see Sarina name an unchanged side to start and then bring on James and Kelly second half 60th minute-ish i.e. business as usual from Sarina.

Kevin: I was two years old in the summer of 1966. I was there, but I don't remember it. A lifetime of watching English football and now this. Drama ahead.

Millie Bright on what it means to captain England in a World Cup final: "It's massive, but it is massive for the team. It is always 'we before me', for me.

"No matter whether I have got the armband or not, it is always a huge privilege and an honour and I think it will be the biggest moment in our careers.

"I always say our careers, because it is a team. Nothing is individual, but it is obviously a dream come true to be in a World Cup final and to lead the girls out, there are no words to describe it. But ultimately it's the team."

World Cup 2023: This is the biggest game - Russo

England striker Alessia Russo says that the England squad are "locked in" and ready to handle the pressure of the Women's World Cup final.

Russo, 24, has started every match in the competition so far and scored in the semi-final win over Australia.

"Obviously this is the biggest game, the one you dream about, the one that means the most," said Russo.

"I feel like it will hit when we're in the tunnel and ready to walk out. It's an incredible occasion, it's been an unbelievable tournament and this is it - this is exactly where we want to be. We can't wait."

Former England goalkeeper Karen Bardsley has told the Football Daily podcast that she would start Ella Toone over Lauren James in the final: "The work Ella Toone has done has been exceptional when she has stepped into the 10 position.

"I think she is undroppable at this moment. She scored that banger in the semi-final to set England off on the right foot. The work she does, how she creates space for her team-mates and the way she presses. We are going to have to be really disciplined in the way we press Spain because they are going to have a lot of possession.

"You’ve got Lauren James then on the bench who could change the game in a heartbeat. What a weapon to have. You wouldn’t want to see those fresh legs come on if you were the Spanish midfield."

It has taken 57 years for an England team to get to this point, another World Cup final.

When Bobby Moore lifted that trophy in 1966 I wonder if fans thought it would take this long to watch their country have a chance at glory again?

This Lionesses team have emerged as a force to be reckoned with on the global stage and, after becoming European Champions last year, have inspired a generation of young footballers and made everyone believe that they are truly capable of great things.

It is something England fans are not used to, reaching back-to-back finals at major tournaments.

    So let's embrace it.

It was an enjoyable trip over to Stadium Australia earlier this afternoon, around five hours before kick-off.

England fans were making noise on the metro from Central Station via Lidcombe to the Olympic Park.

These women have been snapped by all the media outlets throughout the tournament having arrived at every game in full England outfits, draped in flags, face paint and holding instruments.

They were banging their drums and chanting on the train, encouraged by some of the locals who were clapping.

When we got off the station we were greeted by balloon pillars along the exit route in the Spain and England colours.

Fans were already forming small queues to buy the last stock of merchandise and the band was playing by the main stage.
