England captain Millie Bright speaking to BBC One after Spain win the World Cup: “This is really hard to take. We gave it everything. In the first half we weren't at our best, we bounced back in the second half. We had chances, hit the bar but we just didn’t have the final edge and they got theirs in back of the net."

On whether they still believed after Spain scored: "There was a lot of belief, we have been 1-0 down and we never give in. It's hard tot take but its football. We're absolutely heartbroken. We gave everything. Unfortunately we just weren’t there today"

On feeling proud of her side: “A massive amount of pride. The girls were unbelievable. We had a lot of critics, a few lost belief in us but we never stopped believing. Sometimes football goes for you, sometimes against you. We played in a World Cup final. In a few weeks we will appreciate this day, but we want to be winners."

Lucy Bronze, who has won almost everything in the game, is among those watching on as her Barcelona team-mates celebrate on the pitch.

The Lionesses had a huddle where plenty were in tears and they are now stood, largely in silence, waiting for the trophy ceremony.

Spain's players had danced for the cameras in front of their fans but are now preparing to collect their medals.

It's a remarkable achievement by a team who have overcome a dispute with manager Jorge Vilda and the federation.

Let's not forget the penalty save she made in this game to keep England in it to the end.

    She has been absolutely outstanding.

What a tournament she has had. A penalty save in a World Cup final but to still be on the losing side. Agonising for her.

Sandra Panos was Barcelona's goalkeeper as they won the Champions League in June, but she was among those not selected

Following the Spain players' dispute with head coach Jorge Vilda, only three of the 15 who wanted him to be sacked - forward Mariona Caldentey, midfielder Aitana Bonmati and defender Ona Batlle - were picked for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand.

Goalkeeper Sandra Panos, defender Mapi Leon, midfielder Patri Guijarro and forward Claudia Pina, who all helped Barcelona win the Champions League in June, were among those not recalled.

Manchester City defenders Leila Ouahabi and Laia Aleixandri also missed out, as did Manchester United forward Lucia Garcia.

This is a Spain team who came into the tournament amid a backdrop of unrest, with a number of players unhappy with manager Jorge Vilda, who survived a player revolt to keep his job.

On 22 September, two months after a 2-1 quarter-final defeat by eventual winners England at Euro 2022, the Spanish football federation (RFEF) released a statement revealing that 15 players had submitted identical emails saying they would not play for Vilda unless "significant" concerns over their "emotional state" and "health" were addressed.

"Las 15", as the players became known, denied claims they had asked for Vilda to be sacked, but tension followed amid reports of concern over training methods and inadequate game preparation.

At the time, Vilda said: "I wouldn't wish what I'm going through on anyone. I'm with those players who want to be part of this national team."

Vilda has always maintained the support of RFEF president Luis Rubiales and it was the rebel players, rather than the coach, who were axed from the squad.

Somewhere down there Spain's celebrations are only just getting started. It's going to be a long night of partying for La Roja. Jorge Vilda looked to the sky and raised his arms before letting out a yell at full time. Controversy has followed him at every turn at this tournament but he has led Spain to world glory.

Ex-England captain on BBC Radio 5 Live

It got quite bitty towards the end of the game.

Scrappy and stop start, and I think purely it was the team that scored first that held out to win it.

It just shows fine margins doesn't it? Lauren Hemp hit the bar just before Carmona's goal. Then England couldn't really amount enough chances to get back into the game.

When Mary Earps saved the penalty you though 'right, this is it,' the momentum really shifted. But Spain did so well to disrupt that and stop England.

I'm so bitterly disappointed for England but Spain were the better team on the night.

I'm absolutely devastated for Mary Earps, she was outstanding in this tournament and kept England in the game.

    Spain defended so well, resolutely.

This England side can be so proud of what they have done for this tournament, what they've done for women's football, what they've done for our sport back home as well, inspiring a generation and inspiring and empowering women as well.

England will be in finals again for sure.
