Premier League title winner Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.

His opponent for this weekend's fixtures is actor and comedian David Earl, star of new film Apocalypse Clown and a Manchester United fan.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-1

This one will be a good game. Unai Emery's teams are well-organised. They got thumped at Newcastle in their first game but have responded well.

I like the look of Liverpool this season and as long as Mohamed Salah stays I think they can be the ones who really challenge Manchester City.

I think they'll find a way in this one and beat Aston Villa.

    David's prediction: 3-1

Can we not just get rid of VAR yet? Leave all the recent errors aside for the moment... It used to be that *human* error was an accepted part of the game. Home crowds could influence refs' decisions psychologically, too. It was far, far more interesting to watch.

Think Villa's fullbacks could cause Liverpool a lot of problems out wide today, Emery will look to exploit the spaces left by Trent.

Roy Hodgson got the job again this season and I think Palace will comfortably stay in the Premier League.

Wolves are really desperate for some points now and Gary O'Neil has come in as manager.

Midfielder Matheus Nunes has gone, after chucking his toys out of the pram. That won't help their cause but I think they're a well-organised side, I think that helps.

This one smells like a draw all over it.

    David's prediction: 0-0

Roy Hodgson, speaking in his press conference on Friday before today's Premier League clash with Wolves: "The good thing for us in this transfer window is we kept the team I was hoping to work with again. At one stage, with Michael Olise, that looked like it might not be possible.

"For me, the best thing about this transfer window is that we still have the team I came here to work with."

"Rob Holding is player who has interested us for a while and Doug Freedman knows this very well. We are working on the basis perhaps that you can't have too many good-quality players in your squad.

"So if he was available, and it was a deal which was do-able for the club, then I can only say I would be very happy to work with him here."

If you're a goalkeeper - you know full well that if you're at Crystal Palace and Dean Henderson comes in for that amount of money, you know your place has gone.

I had it as a player at Spurs, every single transfer window I'd get back in the team but they'd keep bringing in another one, another midfielder and another midfielder and you have to be realistic. At some point you have to accept defeat that it's going to happen.

It's a strange situation. You don't give up, you get in as good a condition as you can and you wait and you generally get an opportunity somewhere, not always but generally something comes along and you get yourself back in and win the manager over and they feel like the trust is there.

You do need to get out at times, but some players when the window goes they feel sorry for themselves and they just down their training levels because they're not playing. But actually, that three months comes around fast.

  9. 'We will try and impose ourselves here'published at 13:26 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

Liverpool v Aston Villa (14:00 BST)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking before the match against Liverpool, about Emiliano Martinez's return to the starting XI: "For us no.1 is Emiliano. Hopefully he can have the same performance we had last week with Olsen."

On Matty Cash playing right wing: "He was a winger when he was coming through at Nottingham. He played as a winger and we use him sometimes as a right-back but he can play as well as a winger. And Bailey played on Thursday. We have a lot of matches and we need to use every player and today is Cash."

On the test of coming to play Liverpool away: "Always Anfield is difficult and a big challenge. We want to play the matches at a high level and we are going to face one of the best teams in the Premier League. We want to try and impose our style and here I am very excited to watch us against them."

Sam Johnstone gets the nod today, with Dean Henderson on the bench

Two talented English goalkeepers, both with Manchester United on their CV, and both desperate to start for Crystal Palace.

That's the enviable situation for Roy Hodgson after the Eagles completed the signing of Dean Henderson on Thursday for a fee that could rise to £20m.

After a series of loan moves and time spent kicking his heels on the Old Trafford substitutes' bench, rest assured the 26-year-old has not moved to south London to play second fiddle.

But what does that mean for Sam Johnstone, who has finally ousted Vicente Guaita as Palace number one and acquitted himself well between the sticks?

The underlying numbers do favour Henderson, with his fine spell as Sheffield United goalkeeper in the 2018-19 season where he kept 13 clean sheets making a significant impression.

Both keepers have generally played for sides expected to struggle - see Johnstone at West Brom or Henderson at Nottingham Forest last season - and both have England aspirations.

Indeed, Johnstone's double appearance against Andorra two years ago means he is the more recently capped of the two (Johnstone three caps to Henderson's one).

He has only conceded two goals in the opening three games - one a penalty - and seemingly has not done anything wrong as Palace goalkeeper.

With Henderson determined to wrestle the gloves from him, there could be some fireworks at Selhurst Park over the coming weeks.

  11. Wolves set for life after Nunespublished at 13:23 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

Crystal Palace v Wolves (14:00 BST)

How will Wolves get on today after losing influential midfielder Matheus Nunes on transfer deadline day, with him joining Manchester City for £53m?

The deal includes a 10% sell-on clause for Wolves from any profit City make on the 25-year-old in future.

The Portugal international, who has 11 caps for his country, has signed a five-year contract with City.

"I'm so happy to be joining Manchester City, the champions of Europe and a club I've admired for a long time," said Nunes.

"The opportunity to work under [City manager] Pep Guardiola, one of the greatest managers ever, and alongside some of the best players in the world was something I simply couldn't turn down.

"I learned so much during my season at Wolves and I'm excited to continue improving in the Premier League, a division which brings the best out of me. I'm really excited to get going, meet the fans and hopefully be a part of plenty more success at City."

Liverpool shouldn't panic. Let's say Al-Ittihad come in with £250m then Liverpool can't turn it down.

I could see a scenario where Luis Diaz comes off the left and plays in Salah's position and Darwin Nunez comes in and plays off the left-hand side and you've still got Jota and Cody Gakpo in the middle.

Luis Diaz, in my opinion, he might not hit the numbers of Mo Salah but I could easily see him switching to the right with Nunez on the left.

Liverpool have still got an amazing team and it would be body blow to lose him but no-one is irreplaceable.

It has to be a conversation.

If you are Liverpool you are in a great position. Liverpool can turn around and say no to £150m knowing that the Saudi Pro League offered PSG £250m for Mbappe. Liverpool can say no to £200m and an hour before the deadline they can come in with £250m. The money is astronomical.

It's a really hard one because of course Liverpool don't want him to go but if figures like £200m and £250m are on the table, it has to be a conversation worth having.

  18. Liverpool reject £150m bid for Salahpublished at 13:08 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

This was one of the big stories from transfer deadline day...

Liverpool have rejected a £150m offer for Mohamed Salah from Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad. The bid for the 31-year-old forward was for in excess of £100m, with add-ons taking it up to £150m.

Liverpool remain insistent the Egypt international is not for sale, and that is final as far as the club are concerned.

Salah, who joined the Reds from Italian side Roma in 2017, signed a new three-year contract last summer.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said last week that Salah was "100% committed" to the Anfield cause, and on Friday he reiterated the club's stance that the player was not for sale.

"The position remains the same. Absolutely no doubt about that. That's how it is. Nothing else to say," said Klopp.

However, Al-Ittihad will still be able to sign players as the Saudi Pro League transfer window is set to close on 7 September.

  19. Team news - Nunez starts for Liverpoolpublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

Liverpool v Aston Villa (14:00 BST)

After scoring twice in Liverpool's win against Newcastle last-time out, Darwin Nunez is given his first start of the season for the Reds.

It is one of three changes, with Joe Gomez in for the suspended Virgil van Dijk, while Curtis Jones also starts after recovering from an ankle injury.

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Gomez, Robertson, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Jones, Salah, Nunez, Diaz.

Subs: Endo, Gakpo, Elliott, Jota, Tsimikas, Bajcetic, Doak, Kelleher, Quansah.

    .

Aston Villa's deadline day arrival from Barcelona, Clement Lenglet, is named on the bench for the game.

There's just one change in the starting XI from the side that beat Burnley 3-1 in their last Premier League fixture as Emiliano Martínez returns in goal.

Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Konsa, Diego Carlos, Torres, Cash, Kamara, Douglas Luiz, Digne, Diaby, McGinn, Watkins.

Subs: Tielemans, Chambers, Lenglet, Zaniolo, Duran, Olsen, Bailey, Dendoncker, Kellyman.
