  1. CLOSE!published at 15:12 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa

So close to a third goal that would've killed the game off. It is brilliant from Mohamed Salah, whose cross goes past Emiliano Martinez.

The ball is high for Darwin Nunez and, at full stretch, he is not sure whether to go with a raised boot or the head to make contact. He opts for the head, but the ball goes agonisingly wide of the unguarded goal.

  2. 'Better from Villa'published at 15:10 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Really good play by Aston Villa. Very simply working the ball wide.

A really good delivery from Digne and all of the Aston Villa players were looking at the referee saying it had gone over the line but it hadn't.

  3. GREAT SAVE!published at 15:10 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa

Villa's best moment of the match by a long way. Matty Cash, at the back post, gets some power on his header and Alisson is standing behind the line and pushes the ball off the line with both hands.

Villa argue the ball has gone over the line, the referee's watch says no and the replay clearly backs that up, with Alisson getting there just in time.

    Great save.

Anon: Too easy for Liverpool so far. Got to expect a reaction from Villa after some Spanish version of a rollicking.

Anon: Not watching the game but I see Nunez has hit the post twice. As a Newcastle fan, can strikers stop having their worldie game against us this season? Alvarez, Nunez, Ferguson...

You could make a goal of the month reel simply from amazing strikes we've conceded already!

Anon: Next goal is crucial, if Villa score it could be a wild ride. I have faith in the Reds!

Remember to stick your names on the messages.

  5. Postpublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa

Liverpool instantly put Villa under pressure in the second half. Dominik Szoboszlai gets to the byeline and pulls the ball back, with it eventually falling to Mohamed Salah, but the Egyptian can only fire over the top from 18 yards out.

Anon: Watkins has to make himself more available. Seems more of a bystander than target. Too many goals looking like happy accidents. Villa have got goals in them. Unlucky still to be trailing by two.

Joe, Palace fan: We’ve not had a world class finisher since Dwight Gayle – some wretched football here at Selhurst Park. Beautiful weather in the ground making up for it though!

  8. 'The pressure will be on Hojlund'published at 15:01 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

Arsenal v Manchester United (16:30 BST)

    John Murray
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was such a big signing for Manchester United to bring in this player with such promise and he has had this injury.

He has been out of the limelight but I imagine for him the pressure has been growing all the time because it has been an issue with them scoring goals.

Over the years, players have came to Manchester United with a big reputation. In the world in which we live, you cannot avoid that pressure and expectation that you will get from the millions and millions of supporters. He is only 20 years old.

  9. 'Arsenal don't look as exciting this season'published at 15:00 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

Arsenal v Manchester United (16:30 BST)

    Darren Fletcher
    Presenter of Friday Football Social

When I have seen them so far they look like they have that park missing and they were so exciting to watch.

So fluid, so quick, everything was exciting and good on the eye. They don't look like they're anything near that.

  10. United's new number 11published at 14:59 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

Arsenal v Manchester United (16:30 BST)

Rasmus Hojlund is expected to be in Manchester United's squad to face Arsenal this afternoon and has been given the number 11 shirt for the 2023-24 season.

United completed the £72m signing of Hojlund in the summer but the former Atalanta man missed the start of the campaign after picking up an injury in pre-season.

He could well make his United debut later on in the big match at Emirates Stadium.

In a host of other number announcements, Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir became the club's new number one and Argentina winger Alejandro Garnacho has swapped his number 49 for the number 17 worn in the past by mercurial Portuguese talent Nani and more recently by Brazilian midfielder Fred.

Alan: Mark advocating selling Salah must be mad. Does he know our transfer windows is shut so we can't buy a replacement. Far better to agree a deal now for the summer including the price - £200m no less.

Eddie: When it comes to protecting talent from Saudi Arabia, Alisson over Salah 100%. I don’t want to but I’d cash in on Salah. It’s Alisson who’s indispensable.

  12. HALF-TIMEpublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

Crystal Palace 0-0 Wolves / Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa

There are the half-time whistles at Selhurst Park and Anfield.

No goals in south London, with two on Merseyside - a first Liverpool goal from Dominik Szoboszlai and a Matty Cash own goal putting the Reds in charge.

  13. 'They're not putting on any pressure'published at 14:49 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Aston Villa have come here and played with a high line but without any pressure. Normally you come and play with a high line and put pressure on the opposition. That hasn't happened so far.

The balance has been good from Liverpool so far today. Aston Villa haven't found a clear way to build attacks. It's been sporadic.

  14. Postpublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa

It's Liverpool who are looking more likely to get the next goal and Mohamed Salah is denied by Emiliano Martinez, before Villa scramble it clear.

  15. Postpublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Wolves

Some intricate one-touch passing breaks down for Wolves on the edge of the Crystal Palace area. Lots of pretty build-up, not too much cutting edge so far.

Mark: Liverpool fan here, does that look like a £200m performance from Salah? Sell, Sell, Sell!

  17. Postpublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Wolves

Wolves' Pedro Neto shows some good showboating skills with four step overs to create some space and get a shot away, with Sam Johnstone pushing it over the top with a save you'd expect him to make. Still needed saving though.

The corner is then recycled to Neto, but Pablo Sarabia can't keep the volley at the back post down and away it flies.

    Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

You always feel like you're saying 'how unlucky' when you're talking about Darwin Nunez.

Quick link-up with Salah and he can't get it up and down in time. It's just so easy for Liverpool to get in behind that Aston Villa defence.

  20. HITS THE WOODWORK - Liverpoolpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa

Darwin Nunez, for the second time today, hits the Villa woodwork. His first one earlier on hit the post, with Matty Cash inadvertently bundling the ball into the net for an own goal.

This time Villa get away with it. Liverpool spring an attack, Mohamed Salah plays a short pass to Nunez and he lifts the ball delightfully over Emiliano Martinez, but just gets too much on it and it hits the middle of the crossbar and bounces away.

So close to three first-half goals for the Reds.
