But what do you want them to do, play it long to their striker - Mo Salah?

Paul: Trent is like a lame duck on that right wing now. Tracking back isn’t his strong suit anyway but not all he can do is continuously let Gordon run passed him out of fear of another yellow.

  7. 'The chance was hard for Almiron'published at 17:41 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

The ball was bouncing. It bounced so high that it was like a volley when it came to him.

You've just got to try and side-foot it and he did, and it went all the way into the Gallowgate end.

  8. YELLOW CARDpublished at 51 mins

    Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

Huge cheers from the Liverpool end as Kieran Trippier is booked for a late tackle on Alexis Mac Allister. More than a little sarcasm in that response. They feel their side has been harshly treated so far by the officials.

  9. Postpublished at 49 mins

    Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

    Big chance spurned!

Joelinton does really well to get past Trent Alexander-Arnold on the left side of the box, with the Liverpool man looking nervous to make a tackle. The Brazilian's low ball finds Miguel Almiron on the opposite side but he lifts his shot over.

  10. 'Difficult for Trent'published at 17:38 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    Newcastle 1-0 Leicester

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

This is becoming a very, very difficult afternoon for Trent Alexander-Arnold. He is not stopping the crosses coming in.

Anthony Gordon has got him on toast at the moment.

He is flying and loving it at the moment and I don't think Trent is.

  11. Postpublished at 47 mins

Anthony Gordon is having a ball here.

He darts past a couple on the left before driving a low cross that Alexander Isak tries to reach and goes to turf under a challenge from Joe Gomez.

Kevin: I'm certainly no L'pool fan but game after game, Newcastle players do seem to get more leeway before a card is shown to them. Joelinton has kicked everyone in this half, only a verbal warning?

  13. KICK-OFFpublished at 17:35 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

Newcastle in the box seat. They have the lead and a man extra.

  14. 'Equaliser felt unfair but we believed we would score again'published at 17:33 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

FT: Sheffield United 1-2 Man City

Manchester City assistant manager Juanma Lillo speaking to Match of the Day: "I think this [our dominance without chances] only happened in the first half. We had a lot of the ball but found it very hard to find the spaces in behind because there weren't any. In the second half it was a different story, we were able to have more of the ball in better areas and more continuous pressure.

On if he was concerned after the late equaliser: "Well this is normal isn't it? Suddenly after one chance we are level again after we had dominated the majority of the game, it wasn't very fair. I still felt the team were alive and strong. In the first half we could have scored the penalty too, so I still felt we were going to score again.

On contact with Pep Guardiola throughout the game: "Pep has always been here. He was speaking to the technical staff at times and also to me, but all I had to do was move one seat along. I didn't want to move along but otherwise not everyone would have fitted on the bench! He was always there.

On if he enjoyed being in charge of the side today: "When the scoreline is so tight it is very difficult for us managers to enjoy the game. Very ifficult. But there were some moments, the way this team plays, you can't not enjoy it."

  15. 'I'd prefer a point to any pats on the back'published at 17:32 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

FT: Sheffield United 1-2 Man City

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom speaking to Sky Sports: "I'd prefer the point to any pats on the back to be honest. You have to be perfect to beat Manchester City and the two goals we conceded we could have done better with those. But we can't focus on that and forget about the other 99.5% of times where we got things perfect.

"Even though City had a lot of the ball we felt like we had a lot of control in terms of where that ball was, we put in a lot of hard work. I think if we had kept it at 0-0 until our substitutes we could have been much more of a threat to them.

"As it happened they went in front and they are a tough team to play against when they are leading. So for us to come back and make it 1-1 and then go on to lose, it just adds more salt into the wounds."

Anon: My word, what a pig's ear the PGMOL have made of football. Book a player for basically throwing the ball back on pitch then bottle the foul. Couldn't arrange a drink up in a brewery.

  17. 'Sometimes it is just not your day'published at 17:31 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

FT: Sheffield United 1-2 Man City

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom speaking to Sky Sports: "Sometimes it is not your day. We lost the ball out on the touchline, didn't deal with it, Phil Foden's touch got away from him for once and then the ball fell into the path of Rodri who slammed it home.

"Sometimes it is not your day. If you look at the stats then they show City's dominance. But for us, for the performance we wanted to put in to get the points, we were almost there.

On his frustrations about decisions today: "Yes, we were disappointed at times, maybe it is something we need to get used to. But we need to manage our frustrations. We just expect the same for both teams.

On what they can take from the performance: "We've gotten better and better game on game. A different type of performance today against the best team in the land. We have players to come back from injury and have players who have come back in today and more to add. We handicapped ourselves in some circumstances but we will look to come out of the transfer window as strong as we possibly can and look to pick up points as quickly as possible."

  18. 'Three points are very important'published at 17:30 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    FT: Burnley 1-3 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery said: "It was really amazing because we know before the match it is very difficult to win here. They are so excited to play in the Premier League. We respect them a lot and we were very focussed and tried to correct the mistakes we made at Newcastle. Those three points for us are very important."

On Matty Cash: "Some players they are settling in our shape and can play in different positions. He played sometimes higher. He was playing before at Nottingham as a winger. Today he helped us a lot and he scored two goals. We were compact."

Second goal: "Today I don't know if they changed it a little bit to respect us. We can do it and feel comfortable, that goal was an example."

Next game: "We have six points now, that's important. The first priority is the Premier league. Saturday we play Liverpool, a very tough match. Confidence is very important as well."

On transfer window: "Of course we will be alert if something can add to us. We have our ideas waiting in our squad. We will be very ready for the transfer window. We try to always improve."

On Philippe Coutinho: "I don't know."

  19. 'This team is very impressive'published at 17:29 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    Sheffield Utd 1-2 Man City

    Manchester City

    Juanma LilloImage source, Getty Images

Manchester City coach Juanma Lillo speaking to Sky Sports after the win over Sheffield United: "I think we played really well today especially bearing in mind how difficult games like these are.

"Thirty shots is a lot, especially in the second half we had a lot but not being able to finish the goal just at the right time, that made it more difficult as the game went on."

On getting the winner soon after Sheffield United levelled: "Straight after their goal we had another chance as well. Mentally this team have had seven years of preparation and they are very, very impressive.

"It is better to pick up these points but it is still early in the season. It is going to be a really tough battle this season."

  20. 'I know we're getting better'published at 17:29 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    FT: Burnley 1-3 Aston Villa

    Burnley

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany spoke to Match of the Day: "We played against a side with a lot of quality. In the key moments, they punished us. At 2-1, it looked like we would come back to 2-2. We created enough chances. The difference was in both boxes. With the belief that our team is ready to rise to that level and embrace every challenge. You don't play against a good side and create as many chances as we did and look at it negatively."

On a young squad: "Look at all the sides that got promoted. To jump from the Championship to the Premier League is probably the biggest jump in world football. Every day I wake up with a smile on my face because I know we're getting better."

Turf Moor crowd: "When Lyle [Foster] scores that goal and the lift it gave and the pressure it applied on the opponent. It was continuous. That is the place is has to become. Well done Lyle with his first goal."
