Manchester City match-winner Rodri speaking to Sky Sports after the in over Sheffield United: "They are very narrow of course. They defend really well today and not much spaces. We missed the penalty but we kept trying until the end. When we score the first goal, Erling is a goalscorer and he scored for us. I think the mentality of the game we kept going and I score so I am very happy."

On the battle: "Sometimes football is like this, sometimes you score at the end. One mistake gives you a draw. We know the level of this league. We can draw, we can not make mistakes. This game was one of not many chances but in the end we win."

On his goal: "To be fair I just analyse a little bit them [Sheffield United] because they play so deep and a lot of attention on the strikers and wingers but not much attention to the midfielder. I shot six or seven times and I anticipated that one and finished that. I am very happy because I said at the start of the season I wanted to score more goals."

On Guardiola's recovery: "It is hard when you do not have your coach with you but he was in touch with the staff. For the lads it is a little bit difficult but it is ok because we have a conversation and sometimes we don't need Pepe here because of what we learned in the past. The most important is for him to recover."

On the season's first three matches: "It is a good start, after losing one final and winning the other one, the team is great. The rhythm is quite good. Three games, three victories, we have to keep going."

Anon: Newcastle fan here and in no way is that a red card for VVD or yellow for TAA.

They've played well, they have seen the weaknesses. They have made use of those weaknesses.

But the second half is about having that mentality to go on and win.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was raging against the world for most of that first half, from his own team, the officials - even his own goalkeeping coach John Achterberg got it in the neck at one stage.

Newcastle on top and in the lead, helped by such a poor piece of defending by Trent Alexander-Arnold for the goal.

I think Newcasle will be happy to go in at half-time, 1-0 up and then have Eddie Howe explain what Liverpool's weaknesses are to make sure they can exploit them in the second half.

A three-minute spell has swung this game in Newcastle's favour, with Anthony Gordon's opener followed soon after by a red card for Virgil van Dijk.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been in the thick of it too. Some may feel he should have been sent off early on for two bookable offences. It was his mistake that led to Gordon's goal too.

  7. Postpublished at 45+2 mins

    Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

Mohamed Salah throws his arms up to suggest he is being held as the corner comes over and flies past him.

The referee sees nothing wrong, though.

  8. Postpublished at 45+1 mins

Joe Gomez is beaten to a cross in the Newcastle box by Joelinton. It'll be a Liverpool corner, though. We're in injury time. Four minutes of it.

Joelinton does get away with another. This time he leaves Alexis Mac Allister on the turf with a late tackle.

This is a bit of a waste.

Liverpool have a free-kick 30 yards from goal. It will take something special to beat Nick Pope. Dominik Szoboszlai steps up and tamely punts it over.

Joelinton gets a little telling off from the ref after banging into Wataru Endo. The Brazilian has been called up for a few little tussles this half.

I suspect he won't get away with another.

Sam: Trent booked for being shoved, Van Dijk sent off for getting the ball? Are we going to get an explanation for this one?

  13. Postpublished at 41 mins

    Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

For a moment, Cody Gakpo looks to be in for Liverpool. Nick Pope hesitates in coming out and the Reds forward has space to run into and gather. The opportunity is ruined, though, by a heavy touch from the Dutch forward that takes him away from goal and allows Newcastle to crowd him out.

  14. 'You can't slow the game down anymore'published at 17:09 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

At the moment they are just trying to slow it down and you cannot do that in the modern game as you'll get punished. Alisson took a chance there, but the referee would be a brave man to send any more players off in this one.

  15. Postpublished at 39 mins

    Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

It's all Newcastle, as you'd expect.

Miguel Almiron is set up again, this time on the edge of the box. He doesn't quite get the ball out of his feet, though, and his shot is wide.

Tell you what, that Alisson save gets better the more times you see it. What a stop!

That is one of the best saves you will see this season. He has leathered it.

    What a great save.

  18. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 36 mins

    Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

Oh wow! What a save this is!

Alisson somehow manages to divert a fierce volleyed effort from Miguel Almiron up and against the bar with two strong hands. The Newcastle forward was about 15 yards out. The Brazilian had a fraction of a second to react.

  19. Postpublished at 34 mins

    Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool try to respond but after working the ball wide for Andy Robertson he plants his cross too close to Nick Pope.

The Scottish left-back has a task on his hands now, covering all that ground on the left now Luis Diaz has gone off.
