    Newcastle are warming up.

They have a shot on target now as persistence enables them to set up Joelinton for a curling effort straight at Brazilian compatriot Alisson in the Liverpool goal.

Nice work from Miguel Almiron and Sandro Tonali down the right gets Newcastle up the field, but Virgil van Dijk's header in the middle prevents a resulting cross causing Liverpool too much bother.

I have to say I think Liverpool are nudging the midfield battle at the moment. Tonali has struggled to get on the ball and neither had Bruno Guimaraes, but it's still early days.

Sam: Complete bottle job from the Ref. Trent a lucky boy.

More howls from the home fans as Bruno Guimaraes is taken down by Alexis Mac Allister. He'll want to stay out of trouble after his very harsh red last weekend (since overturned to allow him to play today).

We've had 10 minutes and it has been quick and fiercely-contested. We've also had a bit of controversy. Still awaiting the first real big chance, though.

There was an elbow raised, definitely, caught Gordon. But you can't do that when you are on a yellow card.

We were interested in that battle and it's getting even more interesting now.

Two questions then... should the first have been a booking? And then should the second?

The first is by the letter of the new laws (which have come in for some flak already).

You have to wonder if John Brooks may well have booked Alexander-Arnold for the second if he had not given one for the first.

Intrguing to see how it works. It looks like Endo is going to be the deepest most of the time.

You know Trent [Alexander-Arnold] is going to get into that midfield as much as possible and he's also dropping into centre-back and allowing Joel Matip to go forward too.

Oh, Trent. You are treading a fine, fine line!

He Stops Anthony Gordon getting away down the left with an arm across him and having booked him moments earlier, the ref has a call to make.

It is just a talking to, despite the fury of the home fans and Eddie Howe.

We have a talking point already.

  11. YELLOW CARDpublished at 5 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold is sent flying into the technical areas by a shove from Anthony Gordon. He flicks the ball away in frustration. Under the new rules that is a yellow.

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Sandro Tonali drifts past a challenge of two in midfield but his forward ball is to nobody. Class act the Italian. A serious addition to this Newcastle team.

    Phil McNulty

Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall are not allowed to perform their usual technical area double act this season under new rules. They have to operate separately. Tindall had the first little go now Eddie has taken over.

Derek: Liverpool will win today. They only tend historically to have a good season when their rivals (Man U, Chelsea etc) are rebuilding.

Mohamed Salah, who Liverpool are adamant is going nowhere amidst reported interest from Saudi Arabia, is going nowhere in his first attacking involvement. He's offside.

  20. Pick of the statspublished at 16:27 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    Newcastle v Liverpool (16:30 BST)

    • Newcastle are winless in their last 13 Premier League games against Liverpool (D4 L9) since a 2-0 home win in December 2015.
    • Liverpool are on the longest current unbeaten run in the Premier League, a run of 13 matches (W8 D5) since losing 4-1 at Man City in April. They’ve fallen behind in five games in that sequence, gaining nine points from losing positions, more than any other side since the first game of this unbeaten run.
    • Newcastle have won 20 of their 34 home Premier League matches under Eddie Howe (D10 L4), with only Kevin Keegan winning 20 home top-flight matches in fewer games as Magpies boss (30 games). Prior to Howe’s appointment, their last 20 home wins had come over a period of 62 games.
    • In his top-flight league managerial career, Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp has beaten Eddie Howe more times than he has any other manager (11), winning each of his last 10 Premier League games against him. No manager has ever registered 11 consecutive Premier League wins against another, with Klopp’s 10 against Howe the joint-longest, along with Alex Ferguson against Gordon Strachan and Pep Guardiola also against Howe.
