  1. 'That was just bizarre from Chilwell'published at 21:11 British Summer Time 25 August 2023

    Chelsea 1-0 Luton

    Jamie Carragher
Former Liverpool defender on Sky Sports

    I can't believe what I've just seen.

We had just been talking about Ben Chilwell's role in an attacking sense and it looked like he was going to make me eat my words.

    But that was just bizarre!

He drives through the middle and he is in the centre of the goal, unmarked [but opts to pass instead of shoot]. Unbelievable!

  2. CLOSE!published at 49 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Luton

    Could have been 2-0!

Ben Chilwell tackles Issa Kabore and a great big hole appears across the Luton back line which the Chelsea skipper drives into.

He looks up, 10 yards out, but chooses to set up Raheem Sterling rather than shoot. His pass though is off and just about intercepted.

  3. Postpublished at 48 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Luton

Luton debutant Ross Barkley picks the ball up between the lines but is soon smothered by a circle of blue.

He ships the ball to his right where Carlton Morris is waiting but the forward's shot from range goes over the bar.

Well James, Chelsea start the second half like they finished the first, patiently building things up, passing neatly with no real penetration.

James: As a Chelsea fan I’m largely unimpressed apart from the goal. What’s the point in over 72% possession when at least half of it is in your owns half!

    We go again.

  7. 'Chelsea have to go for the second goal'published at 21:03 British Summer Time 25 August 2023

    HT: Chelsea 1-0 Luton

    Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink
Former Netherlands striker on Sky Sports

It hasn't been perfect from Chelsea, far from it, and they are making little mistakes. But they have to keep positive.

They've got the goal, that is what it's all about. Now it is about going on and creating more chances.

In this situation you have to go for the second goal, you can't afford to relax.

Anon: James: why is anyone giving Chelsea any credit? Since the goal they have been so poor. Just passed it around and done nothing until eventually losing it. The only reason we are winning is cos Luton are so poor. This is the Chelsea of last season, with their terrible attitude and sheer complacency. This coming from a Chelsea fan btw.

  9. 'Without ruthlessness, the opponent always has a chance'published at 21:00 British Summer Time 25 August 2023

At this moment Chelsea don't look like they could go and kill a team off, they aren't ruthless. Because of that you always have a chance.

Luton need that little bit of luck, and need to try and stay in the game.

Chelsea only have two strikers on the pitch at the minute, they don't need so many midfielders. They could end up getting a bloody nose here if they're not careful.

  10. 'Sterling's goal was pure determination'published at 20:57 British Summer Time 25 August 2023

    HT: Chelsea 1-0 Luton

    Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink
Former Netherlands striker on Sly Sports

Raheem Sterling's goal came from pure determination and skill.

For once, the run ends with a brilliant finish on his weaker foot, coming inside and unleashing a precise shot.

Luton haven't had a shot on target yet.

I guess the game plan was to keep things tight and reassess at half-time.

Will we see the Hatters push forward more after the break?

MHS: I know it’s early doors but feel Luton will get fewer points than Derby did.

Hendrix: Surely anything less than a thumping would render this a sub par result for Chelsea.
