Everton's game plan appears to be to lure Arsenal into a dreadful game and in the last few minutes there are signs they might be getting there.

  2. Postpublished at 41 mins

    Everton 0-0 Arsenal

Ben White is onto a lay off on the edge of the box and has sight of goal. He connects well with his strike but puts it too close to Jordan Pickford.

Still, nice to be describing a shot because we've not had many of those in this game.

    Everton 0-0 Arsenal

Everton win a free-kick after a late challenge by Declan Rice and that draws a few ironic cheers from the home fans. I don't think either set of supporters are best pleased with Simon Hooper's officiating so far.

Anonymous: There is literally no controversy around that disallowed goal if people read and understood the laws. For it to be deemed a deliberate play that defender must be in control of the ball or have the possibility to control it, and neither applied in this scenario. It should be renamed "controlled play" but that's just semantics - correct decision to disallow.

PJ: Arsenal fans weren't complaining about the fine, fine margins of VAR last time out. What goes around comes around.

Arsenal fans are unhappy after play continued despite three of their players appearing to get caught by late challenges. Bukayo Saka was one of those caught and is still down injured.

Everton are playing a bit further up the pitch now and closing down Arsenal players in the Gunners' half. It has just disrupted the visitors a little bit after such a dominant start.

  7. 'Doucoure shows real intent'published at 17:04 British Summer Time 17 September 2023

Former Tottenham and England goalkeeper on Radio 5 Live

Doucoure shows real intent, goes right to the heart of the Arsenal defence. Probably not enough contact for a penalty but it's the first time Everton have shown real desire to get into the Arsenal box.

  8. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 32 mins

    Everton 0-0 Arsenal

Better from Everton as Abdoulaye Doucoure charges forward. He breaks into the box and tries to turn William Saliba, going down under a challenge.

Everton fans call for a penalty but nothing is given.

Jan: The ball was passed sideways by Gabriel and it rebounded off the Everton player. How can that possibly be offside?

Jeremy: These rules are such a nonsense. Beto deliberately blocked Gabriel playing his pass. Therefore, it shouldn't matter where Nkeitah was standing.

Anonymous: Mykolenko's heel has to be further toward his own goal than his back... if they've considered Nketiah to be offside based on that, it seems very unconvincing.

Oh, now Everton manage to get inside the opposition box but Beto is well controlled by William Saliba, who manages to usher the ball behind for a goal-kick.

No Everton player has managed a touch of the ball inside the Arsenal box as we approach the half hour mark.

    Just complete domination from Arsenal.

    Everton 0-0 Arsenal

Arsenal stay on the attack as Ben White fizzes in a dangerous ball from the right. Everton half clear but Declan Rice picks up the loose ball, opens up a bit of space but his shot is blocked by Jarrad Branthwaite.

  13. Everton reprievedpublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 17 September 2023

    Everton 0-0 Arsenal

Biggest cheer of the afternoon so far as that goal is ruled out.

Arsenal have dominated possession while Everton have struggled to string any passes together.

Sean Dyche's side have had a reprieve but it will only be a temporary one unless they can actually start at least posing the slightest threat.

  14. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 24 mins

All happening for Gabriel Martinelli. Moments after thinking he had scored, he has to go off with a muscle injury. He is replaced by Leandro Trossard.

    Evrton 0-0 Arsenal

    Paul Robinson
Former Tottenham and England goalkeeper on Radio 5 Live

Everton are really struggling for any kind of ball retention at the moment. They win it back and then there's either a poor pass or Arsenal are all over them.

  16. Postpublished at 23 mins

    Everton 0-0 Arsenal

Nothing wrong with Gabriel Martinelli but Eddie Nketiah was deemed offside in the build up.

A let off for Everton, who cannot continue to be so defensive for the rest of this game.

    And there's one!

Gabriel Martinelli is sent through on the left and he finishes coolly into the far corner.

Everton think it was offside and it is being checked...

  19. Postpublished at 19 mins

    Everton 0-0 Arsenal

The Bournemouth-Chelsea game earlier was the first goalless draw this season. Surely we are not going to get two on the same day?

No, it is too early for that sort of chat. There are going to be goals, I'm sure.

  20. Postpublished at 17 mins

    Everton 0-0 Arsenal

First opportunity of sorts for Everton as Abdoulaye Doucoure flicks the ball over the top, Beto tries to muscle his way through but an Arsenal defender is able to head back to David Raya.
