  1. 'Wolves have to find a way to win'published at 14:23 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

    Luton v Wolves (15:00 BST)

    Michael Brown
    Former Manchester City midfielder

Yes, Wolves would love more points but they have still got some really talented players.

The week before the season started you would have been watching a lot of players going out of the door, a new manager coming in, financial restraints and starting to think they were in a bit of trouble.

But I was there at Manchester United with that wonderful performance and it was one of the best things that could have happened in giving them confidence and belief.

They managed to win at Everton and against Liverpool they did well, were creative and showed great work ethic. They just have to find a way to win by being more clinical, but it was the same last season as well.

Without disrespecting Luton, with the squad Wolves have got they will feel this is a game they have to go and win.

Newly-promoted teams are looking for a fragile horse to jump over - are Wolves in that category? They are probably a side people are looking at and this is a chance for them to get away from that quickly.

Luton forward Carlton Morris, speaking to Football Focus about playing the the Hatters' Kenilworth Road stadium: "It’s magic. It’s so tight, compact, on top of you. It’s a cliche saying the ‘12th man’ thing, but you can feel it here. There’s a different energy when the fans are that tight, it’s incredible.

“It’s daunting [coming to Kenilworth Road] because she’s a bit rough around the edges. I love her, but it's not the most comfortable place for an opposition player to come. That’s what it’s about, making them uncomfortable, not feel at home. It’s quite a hostile environment, so it’s another thing to think about."

Talking about his journey to the Premier League, Morris added: "It’s been crazy. I’ve done the rounds, done all the loans but every loan built me up as a man and a footballer.

"I’ve played in League Two, League One, the Championship and now the Premier League.

"There’s a tangible jump up from each division. Lower down the leagues you might have someone who is technically really good, but might not be the most physically gifted. The higher up you go, everything pieces together.

"You get to the top and everyone has got everything; technically, tactically, physically, and that’s what I’m striving to be."

  3. Hodgson returns to dugout after recovering from illnesspublished at 14:19 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Crystal Palace v Fulham (15:00 BST)

    Some excellent news for Palace...

Roy Hodgson has recovered from his illness and will take charge against Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday.

Hodgson, 76, missed Saturday's defeat at Aston Villa after being taken ill on the morning of the game.

The Eagles say he returned to take training on Tuesday and will be in the dugout at Selhurst Park this weekend.

The former England manager is in his second spell as Palace boss after succeeding Patrick Vieira in March.

He initially agreed a deal until the end of the season but after steering the club away from relegation danger he signed a one-year contract in the summer.

The London club are ninth in the Premier League after taking seven points from their opening five games.

Fulham manager Marco Silva has been full of praise for Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson before the two London clubs meet in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Eagles are ninth in the table, one place above Silva's Fulham. Both sides have earned seven points from five games, but Palace have the better goal difference.

"I really admire him to be honest," Silva said. "Aside from his qualities as a manager, I think the numbers of his career speak for themselves and I don't need to talk about it.

"He's a top person and a gentleman. Sometimes we share a short period of time together before and after the matches and when we play behind-closed-doors games and it's always a pleasure to be with him.

"He's quality, he knows the club really well and all the players know him well, so he made a huge impact and helped them last season in a tough moment for them."

Silva has also taken note of how Palace have adjusted to life without winger Wilfried Zaha following his summer exit to Turkey.

"They have very good quality in the backline, and [Odsonne] Edouard is at a very good level," added Silva. "This season they have [Jean-Philippe] Mateta and Edouard together and it has worked well in some games.

"[Eberechi] Eze has also been decisive for them and in my opinion he's a top player who will do good things in his career. He has the conditions to do this."

  5. 'No sign of second-season syndrome'published at 14:16 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Man City v Nottingham Forest (15:00 BST)

    Saveena Johal, Punjabi Forest, external

Five games into the season and three of our seven points have been gained on the road.Having arguably the most unfavourable start, the games we were dreading are (nearly) done with, and we are not downbeat.

Our away performances at Old Trafford, Emirates Stadium, and Stamford Bridge of last season pale in comparison to those we have just witnessed. Although we have continued to sit deep, we have then caused havoc for strong opposition teams.

A draw at Manchester City feels within our capabilities, but there appears to be enough quality in the team for us to have an exciting season whatever tomorrow’s result.

Taiwo Awoniyi has been consistently impressive up front, Ryan Yates gutsy as ever, and Ola Aina has looked a brilliant addition in recent games.

After Callum Hudson-Odoi’s decline at Chelsea, he has been a threat for us and if there ever was a man to help build his confidence and uncover his talent it would most certainly be our manager.

To cast our minds back to this time last year, four points accrued from seven games - with a painful goal difference - the breakthrough this campaign is crystal clear.

    No sign of second-season syndrome.

  6. Steel yourselves again, Brighton!published at 14:12 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Roberto de ZerbiImage source, Getty Images

Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague says Roberto de Zerbi "has got great admirers" at Manchester City and could be a potential successor to Pep Guardiola when he leaves his role with the Premier League champions.

The Italian has led Brighton to European football for the first time in the club's history - although they lost their opening Europa League game to AEK Athens - and has been mentioned as a candidate for some of the biggest jobs in football.

"He (De Zerbi) just takes football to another level, that's what I think he's doing," Balague told BBC Radio 5 Live's Euro Leagues podcast.

"I feel Pep Guardiola has two years left at club level, he's taken football to a place - if he has the energy of 2008 he might take it to the next place but I think now it's about winning for him.

"There is somebody else who has taken football to where Pep has developed it to and he's willing and starting to do the next thing and the last thing that's left is to organise an attack where the players do not just do what their instinct says but what they've been training. That's difficult for Guardiola because he has big players who have won a lot but that's what De Zerbi is doing with his players and it's just wonderful to see."

When asked if he was hinting that De Zerbi could succeed Guardiola, Balague added: "I've got the impression he will.

"He could have gone to Spurs this summer but decided to stay at Brighton. They love him there, how they talk about him, how he's made everyone better from the media department to the doctors to everyone are on their toes but enjoying the journey.

"They want to keep him for as long as they can but he's got great admirers at Manchester City. I think Guardiola has two years left at club level before going to international level and then it will be an opportunity for De Zerbi to put in practice what he's learned."

  7. The toughest game in the world?published at 14:10 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Man City v Nottingham Forest (15:00 BST)

    EtihadImage source, BBC Sport

The sun is out at Etihad Stadium today but Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper is not expecting a warm welcome to Manchester - he said this week that coming here is “the toughest game in the world” and it is hard to argue with him at the moment.

It was the middle of winter when Manchester City last dropped points here - when they drew with Everton on 31 December last year - and in 2023 they have won 19 games in a row in all competitions, including 12 Premier League games, scoring 63 goals at an average of more than three a game.

Basically, they score a lot of goals whatever the weather. Forest shipped six last time they were here, in August last year, so anything less than that is an improvement, right?

  8. Edwards only has eyes for Lutonpublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

    Luton v Wolves (15:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Kenilworth Road

Luton boss Rob Edwards will get the chance to renew some old acquaintances today.

Edwards played in excess of 100 games over a four-year period for Wolves from 2004 and he also had a spell as a coach at Molineux.

However, he clearly is more interested in getting Luton's first Premier League points today.

  9. And one last bit of contextpublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Things have gone pretty well for Palace and Fulham so far.

Roy Hodgson's permanent return to the former has yielded seven points from five games, including two victories. They've looked useful, even with Michael Olise sat in the stands.

Fulham boss Marco Silva seems to have spent most of this campaign so far looking aggrieved at some of the decisions that have gone against his side.

The Cottagers have the same record as Palace, albeit with an inferior goal difference. They've also looked useful, despite losing star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic in the summer.

A win for either today will move them to the cusp of the European qualification spots. Yeah, I know, daft to call it that when we're five games in, but whatever, I have to sell this stuff!

  10. Some more contextpublished at 14:05 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

    Luton v Wolves (15:00 BST)

Luton and Wolves have three points between so far this season from nine games. Just the one sole win (that Wanderers have recorded).

It's the kind of stat that suggests they'll both be battling against the drop deep into the season.

Withy four straight losses under their belt, the Hatters will see today's game as a big chance to finally get that first Premier League win under their belt.

And what a boost it would be for them to notch it up and sit outside the bottom three tonight.

Manchester City are doing Manchester City things at the start of this season. They've won all five of their games so far, scoring 14 times and conceding just thrice.

Today, they are overwhelming favourites to put Nottingham Forest away.

However, City boss Pep Guardiola says his side are "in trouble" as a result of the injuries they are currently carrying. OK, settle down everyone. I know. You wish your side was as "in trouble" as that.

But City are going to have to cope without some serious talent in Bernardo Silva, Kevin de Bruyne, Jack Grealish, Mateo Kovacic and John Stones.

And Forest have shown they are capable of turning over one of the big boys on their own patch already this season.

So let us know what you think via the medium of the thumbs on this post... can Forest pull off a shock at City? Thumb up for yes, down for no.

    Oh, here you all are!

I've been sat here since quarter past 11 waiting for team news for the 12:30 game to drop.

Fancy not having an early Premier League game to keep us all entertained. Selfish.

On the plus side, we have got an extended day in store today, with not only the usual 17:30 match but only one at 20:00 too.

That last one could be fun too, with a battered and bruised Manchester United heading to Burnley.

I suspect there might be a few rubberneckers keeping a watchful eye on that one. The hilarious ghouls!
