Frankly, things like this have been tried in he women's game and failed miserably. You weren't sure what kind of performance you were getting. As a goalkeeper, you really want to feel the backing of the manager and if that call doesn't come you are really disappointed.

But if you keep getting batted down it becomes really frustrating and puts you in a difficult position. It takes a long time to get people accustomed to different styles and ways of play.

Joe: Dan 13:38: At Brighton, there is a clear understanding: Verbruggen is the long term no. 1 but is very young, so the 33 year old Steele is rotating to ease Verbruggen in.

Raya and Ramsdale are both in their mid-20s. At this point in their careers, they will expect to be first choice and playing in all the big games. Neither will tolerate being benched for long.

I love the defensive discipline of David Moyes' sides and the way he thinks as a manager. He knows what his team's strengths are, and plays to them.

The Hammers will be difficult to break down at Anfield and they will counter-attack when they do get the ball back.

It's Liverpool's forwards who will decide this game, though. They have got so many dangerous attackers that they can rotate and cause all sorts of different problems.

I liked their response when they found a way to win after falling behind against Wolves, and I think they will find a way through West Ham's defence too.

    Prediction: 2-0

I think he's actually a player that suffers from confidence issues which is very strange to say for a player who has been signed for 60 plus million pounds and had a good season at Benfica and then gets bought by Liverpool.

But there's a bigger challenge when you come to Liverpool to try to achieve what you've achieved at Benfica, going up that next level, that next echelon. He's still very raw I think we forget how young he is.

I think the other comparison we all have and everyone's made with him is that we're all judging him on Haaland because both players were brought in at the same time and the expectancy of both players was huge.

  10. 'The sky is the limit' for 'world-class' Odegaardpublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

Harry Symeou, The Chronicles of a Gooner, external

It is fair to say that when Martin Odegaard first arrived in north London, he divided opinion. But his physical and technical development, along with the team’s evolution on the whole, has seen him become widely regarded as one of the best attacking midfield players in world football.

The Gunners have been lauded for their recruitment in recent years but their ability to secure the futures of their key players through new and improved contracts has at times gone under the radar. Odegaard very quickly earned the trust of his boss and along with that, the captaincy - following in the footsteps of some of the club’s greats.

Odegaard has always displayed technical brilliance and you could never doubt his commitment or work rate, but in years gone by, you would have argued he did not carry enough of a goal threat. In the past 12-18 months he has added goals to his creative abilities, scoring 15 in the Premier League last season - elevating himself into the world class category in his position.

The sky is the limit for Arsenal’s 24-year-old captain. He has the talent and the character to go on and become one of the club’s greatest ever players. I predict that in years to come, his signing, rumoured to have cost the club something in the region of £30m, will be looked back on as one of the signings of the decade.

  12. How brave will Bournemouth be?published at 13:46 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    Brighton v Bournemouth (14:00 BST)

The outcome of this game depends on how brave Cherries boss Andoni Iraola is - because we know the braver you are against Brighton, the more chance you have got of being spanked.

It is interesting that the only team to have beaten the Seagulls this season are West Ham, who have that patience in their play. Brighton like teams to press them, so will Iraola do something different, and will it work?

Brighton play in the Europa League on Thursday which makes things trickier for them, and European football will definitely test their squad depth as the season goes on, but for now I think they will cope.

Roberto de Zerbi's side only know one way to play, and they are a hell of a team to watch.

    Prediction: 3-1

  13. Kane remains supremely ablepublished at 13:45 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

It's a good job that Spurs have started the season so well, otherwise what Harry Kane has been doing during the early weeks of would really sting.

It's not really a surprise to see the England captain smashing it in such a way - he is world class and playing for the Bundesliga's best club. But the way he has seamlessly slotted in there is impressive nonetheless. Watching the highlights from his hat-trick display yesterday, it looks like he's been there six years, not six weeks.

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min has admitted last season was "tough" but insists it made him even stronger.

The South Korea forward had his least productive campaign since his first in the Premier League, with 10 goals and six assists as Spurs finished eighth and missed out on European football.

Three managers - Antonio Conte, Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason - had spells in charge during what was a turbulent season.

New boss Ange Postecoglou made Son captain this summer, replacing Hugo Lloris and reflective of his senior role in the squad following Harry Kane's sale to Bayern Munich.

The 31-year-old says he has come into this season having learned the most since the early days of his career.

"It was a tough time for different reasons, but it made me even stronger. Now I'm an experienced player," he told a fans' forum.

"Last season was probably the toughest season I've faced but, also, I learned the most - more than when I was 18.

"That was a surprise to me. It's made me stronger again. Yes, it was tough, but it's part of my life and, as a player and a human being, it's made me stronger."

It will be a cracking derby at the Emirates today. It will be a very close game with both teams playing attacking football. Super excited to see our new signing Brennan Johnson play. I’m gonna say a 2-2 draw with a brace from Son and goals from Saka and Odegaard. Mark my words. COYS!

    Brighton v Bournemouth (14:00 BST)

Roberto de ZerbiImage source, Getty Images

Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague says Roberto de Zerbi "has got great admirers" at Manchester City and could be a potential successor to Pep Guardiola when he leaves his role with the Premier League champions.

The Italian has led Brighton to European football for the first time in the club's history - although they lost their opening Europa League game to AEK Athens - and has been mentioned as a candidate for some of the biggest jobs in football.

"He (De Zerbi) just takes football to another level, that's what I think he's doing," Balague told BBC Radio 5 Live's Euro Leagues podcast.

"I feel Pep Guardiola has two years left at club level, he's taken football to a place - if he has the energy of 2008 he might take it to the next place but I think now it's about winning for him.

"There is somebody else who has taken football to where Pep has developed it to and he's willing and starting to do the next thing and the last thing that's left is to organise an attack where the players do not just do what their instinct says but what they've been training. That's difficult for Guardiola because he has big players who have won a lot but that's what De Zerbi is doing with his players and it's just wonderful to see."

When asked if he was hinting that De Zerbi could succeed Guardiola, Balague added: "I've got the impression he will.

"He could have gone to Spurs this summer but decided to stay at Brighton. They love him there, how they talk about him, how he's made everyone better from the media department to the doctors to everyone are on their toes but enjoying the journey.

"They want to keep him for as long as they can but he's got great admirers at Manchester City. I think Guardiola has two years left at club level before going to international level and then it will be an opportunity for De Zerbi to put in practice what he's learned."

    Arsenal v Tottenham (14:00 BST)

There are going to be goals in this one, and lots of them!

This isn't going to be a drab game because Spurs boss Postecoglou will go blow for blow, whatever Arsenal throw at them - he's not going to go there and park the bus like Manchester United did earlier this season.

I am expecting Spurs to cause Arsenal problems, but the same will apply to the Gunners when they go at the Spurs backline.

This is the toughest game Postecoglou has faced since he took charge in the summer, and Liverpool are next up, so this is a very testing spell for him.

It would be remarkable if he could continue the start he has made by going to the Emirates and getting a win on Arsenal's home patch - he will have a real go, but it might prove to be a step too far.

    Prediction: 3-2

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has praised the impact of Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou since his arrival at Tottenham as the two prepare to meet in Sunday's North London derby.

Both clubs go into the match unbeaten in the Premier League, having each won four games and drawn once so far this season.

Arteta said: "I really like him. I had players and I know players that had him and they always speak really, really highly of him. That’s not a coincidence.

"You can tell straight away he’s fitting in the right way. That’s the beauty of this league that we have top, top managers."

Sunday will be the first time Arsenal will face Tottenham since Spurs' record goalscorer Harry Kane - who also holds the record for most North London derby goals - left to join Bayern Munich in the summer.

"Obviously he's a special player, everything was going through him," Arteta added when asked about the England captain.

"He was the one that guided everything together and he did it in many different ways in many different areas of the pitch.

"Now things are a bit different. They have some specificity in some movements they make now with different players. I think it's a very different team."
