What a great ball in that was and an excellent start from Sunderland.

They've come flying out of the traps.

Sunderland on the counter following that Southampton corner.

Fly down the field, hold the ball up, switch from left to right, a teasing cross is sent in toward the back post.

It bounces once and Jack Clarke is there with a downward header on the outside of the six-yard-box, past Gavin Bazunu and into the net.

    What a start!

Well the officiating crew obviously weren’t up late last night watching the transfer window drama, they look fresh and the referee blows their whistle and we are under way between Sunderland and Southampton at the Stadium of Light

Elsewhere in the Championship Birmingham v Millwall and Swansea v Bristol City have started too.

And Tranmere against Wrexham in League Two is under way as well.

Just when the tiredness was starting to kick in and you were thinking of drifting off to bed last night, Southampton announced a late addition on deadline day.

They signed Sunderland striker Ross Stewart to a three-year-deal.

He's injured at the moment - Achilles - but is reportedly close to full fitness.

There are a few bleary eyes around the Swansea.com Stadium today after a frantic finish to transfer deadline day.

The Swans left it late last night to complete the signings of Josh Tymon, Kristian Pedersen, Bashir Humphreys and Jamal Lowe.

None of the four were signed in time to feature against Bristol City today but their arrivals have lifted the mood among Swansea fans, who are still waiting for their team's first league win of the season.

  7. Swans yet to take flightpublished at 12:21 British Summer Time 2 September 2023

It's not been an ideal start to life as Swansea boss for Michael Duff.

The Swans are yet to win after four league games and blew a lead to lose to Bournemouth in the EFL Cup in midweek.

Duff makes two changes from the defeat at Preston last week, Ollie Cooper is in for Jay Fulton, while Kyle Naughton takes Harry Darling's place.

Bristol City, who seems to finish midtable in the Championship every season, are 14th after four games.

Nigel Pearson gives a full debut to midfielder Taylor Gardner-Hickman as they look to claim the derby spoils.

Swansea XI: Rushworth, Wood, Naughton, Cabango, Ashby, Cooper, Grimes, Patino, Key, Cullen, Yates.

Subs: Fisher, Fulton, Darling, Allen, Ginnelly, Paterson, Kuharevich, Tjoe-A-On, Lissah.

Bristol City XI: O'Leary, Pring, Naismith, James, Williams, Knight, Sykes, Bell, Wells, Gardner-Hickman, Vyner.

Subs: Bajic, Cornick, King, Mehmeti, Dickie, Tanner, Roberts, Yeboah.

  8. Blues have eyes on the prizepublished at 12:20 British Summer Time 2 September 2023

    Birmingham v Millwall (12:30 BST)

It's been a difficult road for Birmingham fans these past 10 years or so but, after a summer takeover, these are brighter times at St Andrew's now.

Blues, who give a debut to deadline-day full-back signing Cody Drameh, could go top, albeit possibly only briefly, with a win today and could pull off a pretty unusual hat-trick.

They've won both their past two home league games with a goal in stoppage time... There'll be no early exits if this one is level at 90 minutes, that's for sure.

As for Millwall, their two wins have sandwiched two defeats in a mixed start to the campaign.

Former Birmingham boss Gary Rowett will hope his side can start finding some consistency sooner rather than later.

They make one change from the win over another of Rowett's old teams Stoke, as Murray Wallace comes in for the injured Joe Bryan.

Birmingham XI: Ruddy, Drameh, Sanderson, Long, Buchanan, Bielik, Sunjic, Bacuna, Stansfield, Anderson, Hogan.

Subs: Etheridge, M Roberts, Aiwu, Oakley, Longelo, Gardner, James, Miyoshi, Khela.

Millwall XI: Sarkic, Norton-Cuffy, Leonard, Hutchinson, Cooper, Wallace; B. Mitchell, Saville; Flemming; Nisbet, Bradshaw.

Subs: Bialkowski, McNamara, Longman, Campbell, Watmore, Emakhu, De Norre, Esse, Harding.

  9. Closer than early table suggests?published at 12:17 British Summer Time 2 September 2023

    Image caption,

The last time Sunderland's Tony Mowbray (left) came up against Southampton's Russell Martin (right) was when the Saints boss was in charge at Swansea last season - the Black Cats lost 3-1

A match between two sides at opposite ends of the table.

Sunderland are down in 18th, with only one win, but Tony Mowbray’s men are undefeated in their least two league games and look to be finding their feet.

Nobody has been able to beat fourth-placed Southampton yet and, despite a leaky defence, Russell Martin’s side look decent in the early stages of this Championship campaign.

A match that is probably closer on paper than the league table suggests.

Russell Martin makes four changes to his starting 11 that beat QPR last Saturday.

Noteworthy bits, Will Smallbone returns from injury and new signing Taylor Harwood-Bellis, from Manchester City, is on the bench.

Southampton: Bazunu, Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Holgate, Manning, Downes, Smallbone, S Armstrong, Edozie, Mara, A Armstrong (capt).

Subs: McCarthy, Harwood-Bellis, Bree, Charles, Aribo, Fraser, Alcaraz, Amo-Ameyaw, Adams.

Subs: Bishop, Huggins, Semedo, Taylor, Bennette, Pritchard, Seelt, Triantis, Rigg.
