    Chelsea 1-0 Arsenal

Impressive showing from a confident Chelsea side.

Although it is almost too confident from Roberto Sanchez as the Blues keeper casually passes out and puts his defence into trouble.

Thiago Silva has to dive in on Gabriel Martinelli and relieve the pressure.

    Lucky boys.

Hate seeing pens for accidental handballs, unless it's blocking a shot on target it's ridiculous to give these.

    Dan

In the rules, that’s a penalty. But nobody watching football wants that to be a penalty. Are players supposed to jump with their arms by their sides?

    Ross

Cole Palmer, who should have received a second yellow after storming over to the ref demanding a booking for Rice whilst on a booking himself, scores the opening goal. Another game ruined by cowardly and incompetent officiating.

    Chelsea 1-0 Arsenal

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Stamford Bridge

Arsenal will feel that penalty award was harsh but Chelsea have reward for a very bright start. Mykhaiko Mudryk has made one or two good contributions, which will lift his confidence.

Arsenal, in contrast, have been a little careless and manager Mikel Arteta is letting them know about it.

Absolutely clattering it down with rain in west London.

The sort of weather which gets the ball moving quicker and the adrenalin pumping a little more.

Arsenal are slowly trying to get back into the game - or get started - and Declan Rice pokes wide from a narrow angle.

Marc Cucurella is a bit lucky here. The Chelsea left-back clips Bukayo Saka after the ball has already gone out of play.

    Bit naughty and very needless.

    Chelsea 1-0 Arsenal

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Zinchenko has a real problem on his hands.

A nominal left back that we know likes to step up into midfield, but every time he does Sterling has him in behind.

Add a yellow card onto that now and it's going to be tricky for him today in this rain.

Imagine having to lunge for the ball without using your arms for either momentum or balance. I get that if it hits an outstretched arm it looks bad, but the refs need to have some understanding of how your body moves, you can't perform every action with your arms by your side

GOAL - Chelsea 1-0 Arsenalpublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    Cole Palmer (14 mins)

    Clinical strike from Cole Palmer.

The young Chelsea forward strokes the ball into the bottom left corner, with David Raya diving in the opposite direction.

The start which Chelsea dreamed of.

  10. PENALTY TO CHELSEApublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal

Given! The cross from Raheem Sterling on the right wing is head goalwards by Mudryk and the ball strikes the hand of William Saliba.

Looks like the right decision under the laws and interpretation of the modern game.

Excellent tempo to this game, it's very lively.

Chelsea on the attack... oh, they want a penalty. Did a cross from the right strike an Arsenal hand?

The home players believe so. Chris Kavanagh thinks not, but tells them it will be checked...

    This is bubbling up already.

After an Arsenal attack breaks down, Chelsea try to counter and it is stopped by Declan Rice clattering into Cole Palmer.

That's for whacking my mate, Rice might be saying.

Yellow? Palmer thinks so, but not for me. Or the ref.

  15. YELLOW CARDpublished at 17:40 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

Ouch! That is not pleasant. Cole Palmer rakes his studs down the back of Gabriel Jesus' right ankle and sees yellow, rightly, as a result.

Moments later, Bukayo Saka tumbles to the turf. A worry when he's been injured in recent weeks, but I think he's fine.

Oh, and then Gabriel Jesus goes down in his own half after getting a whack by his former Manchester City team-mate Cole Palmer.

  17. Postpublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal

A bit of eyeballing from Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka and Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella after they have a tussle on the touchline.

That could be a key battle today.

  18. Postpublished at 17:36 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

More like it from Arsenal. They settle into their rhythm, knocking the ball around confidently at the back.

    The pitch is slick.

  19. Postpublished at 17:35 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal

Arsenal seem confused by Chelsea's attacking line-up. They don't know who is playing where - which is exactly as Mauricio Pochettino planned.

Cole Palmer surges through the middle, plays out to Raheem Sterling but he gets the ball stuck in his feet.

This start has lifted the noise inside the Bridge.

  20. Postpublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    Sharp start by Chelsea.

A long ball forward from Thiago Silva to Raheem Sterling puts Arsenal on the back foot, with Conor Gallagher having a shot blocked before Enzo Fernandez fires over the bar.
