  1. 'Chelsea deserves the win'published at 18:22 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    HT: Chelsea 1-0 Arsenal

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Chelsea were definitely the better team in the first half, but Arsenal have looked stronger in the last 15 minutes. This game is a long way from over and there are lots of great players who could make a difference.

If anyone deserves a win though it is Chelsea.

Need to bring on Partey for Jorginho. Our midfield is absolutely swamped and Jorginho is looking lightweight.

    Tom, Arsenal fan

Time for Odegaard to come on...

    Ashley, London

Fair point from Nick at 17:53. Palmer should have been off. Still can't see Chelsea winning this though.

  3. HALF-TIMEpublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    Chelsea 1-0 Arsenal

Good stuff from Chelsea, leaving the home fans singing in the rain as the first half comes to a close.

Cole Palmer's cool penalty - which came after the VAR drew attention to a handball from William Saliba - is the difference.

Arsenal's unbeaten start in the Premier League is in jeopardy.

Raheem Sterling tumbles in the Arsenal box and the home fans scream for a peno.

Ref Chris Kavanagh isn't having that.

Can Arsenal steal something before the break? They have a free-kick in a promising position about 35 yards out and Martin Odegaard stands over it.

Oh, all the runners go too quickly. Multiple players are offside.

  6. 'Arsenal are much more into this game now'published at 18:16 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    Chelsea 1-0 Arsenal

Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Arsenal are much more into the game now, when they didn't have any answers before. It's just these slight technical changes they've made, and they look more like they usually do - and holding the ball a lot better.

Heading into the final throes of the first half, Chelsea fans will be more than happy with what they've seen.

A second goal will make that cuppa taste like champagne.

A swift counter from the home side down the right promises that, ends in Malo Gusto swiping a left-foot shot over the bar.

Mikel Arteta's expression won't have brightened after Gabriel Jesus miskicks a shot. It doesn't even go out of play.

Declan Rice salvages the ball but the cross is not able to trouble Robert Sanchez.

Arsenal are pushing and probing but not finding any holes in Chelsea's defensive line.

The Blues are happy to play deep and looking to use their pace of their attack - which could probably form a decent 4x100m relay team - on the counter.

Mikel Arteta is getting animated on the touchline.

    Ben Croucher
    BBC reporter at Old Trafford

Fans already gathering outside Old Trafford to pay their respects to Bobby Charlton. Very sombre mood. Most of the fans here too young to see him play, but his legacy endures.

Arsenal are caught napping at the back when Conor Gallagher pops up in the area unmarked.

He tries to lob David Raya but fails, although the flag goes up anyway.

One of the running battles so far has been between Bukayo Saka and Marc Cucurella.

After a bit of niggle between the pair earlier, Saka leaves one late on the Chelsea left-back.

    That sums up Arsenal's frustrations.

    Chelsea 1-0 Arsenal

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Stamford Bridge

There was a real love-in on the sidelines at Stamford Bridge before kick-off as Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino and his Arsenal counterpart Mikel Arteta - former colleagues at Paris St. Germain - shared the warmest of embraces.

    Real respect. Now real rivalry.

    Chelsea 1-0 Arsenal

This is the first time this season where Arsenal have been able to play Saka, Martinelli and Jesus together - but it's not clicking for the trio just yet.

Chelsea, apart from those couple of moments of uncertainty from keeper Robert Sanchez, have looked pretty solid.

Refs expecting defenders to head balls like salmons now. Ridiculous!

    Adam

The handball rule is so stupid. He has to use his arms to jump. The cross didn’t hit his arm. The header from point blank range did. What is he supposed to do? Disappear?Since the Liverpool-Spurs farce, the refs and VAR have gone into meltdown.

    Liam, Worcester

It's plain idiocy to suggest that having your arms away from your body is always, without question, an unnatural position. I defy anyone to jump forwards to head a ball like Saliba did with your arms by your side. Ridiculous rule!

Cole Palmer's penalty remains the difference between the two sides with half an hour on the clock.

That came after Arsenal defender William Saliba was ruled to have handled in the area.

One for you to watch on Match of the Day later and judge for yourself.

Safe to say lots of you who have seen it are not convinced.

Gallagher takes a ball in the face as he tries to stop Arsenal clearing, but he is soon back on his feet and play resumes.

Gallagher clearly is seeing straight as he bursts forward from midfield and tees up Cole Palmer, who drags a left-foot shot just wide of the post.

Palmer's movement is causing all sorts of problems for Arsenal.

The blood is flowing too quickly for Robert Sanchez at the moment. Another rush here.

The Chelsea keeper flies out of his goal on the left, pauses as he considers whether to continue for a long ball, then decides to go for it.

Bukayo Saka knocks the ball over his head, but thankfully for the Chelsea contingent Thiago Silva is well placed to clear.

Arsenal have been blown away in this first 15-20 minutes. It is looking good for Chelsea at the moment, they will be hoping that they can just find the second goal while they're on top.

Arsenal just need to find a foothold somehow, they've got experienced players that will be coming into the game as it goes on.
