It's certainly been an action-packed afternoon in the EFL

There were 27 goals spread across eight Championship games, with Plymouth putting six past Norwich but West Brom and Millwall fans not seeing a single one at The Hawthorns.

Five players helped themselves to hat-tricks - but spare a thought for Troy Deeney, who bagged a match ball but saw his Forest Green side lose at Notts County.

Leicester City are setting the pace in the Championship, while unbeaten Portsmouth and Notts County finish the day top of League One and League Two respectively.

But there's a long, long way to go this season. Thanks for joining us.

  3. Winless Owls sink to the bottompublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Swansea City and Middlesbrough recorded their first victories of the season this afternoon, against Sheffield Wednesday and Southampton respectively.

The Owls drop to the foot of the table and are one of three teams without a win in the EFL this season, alongside League One strugglers Fleetwood and Cheltenham.

Pressure will be building on Wednesday boss Xisco Munoz, who only took charge this summer after Darren Moore's unexpected departure.

It's certainly been an afternoon for goals, and hat-tricks...

    West Brom 0-0 Millwall

Somehow, after all that, it ends goalless.

Zian Flemming's first-half penalty was well saved by Baggies keeper Alex Palmer while Bartosz Bialkowski produced a superb save to deny Matt Phillips after the turnaround.

Alex Mowatt and Brandon Thomas-Asante both thumped the bar in the closing stages as Albion tried to win it but it's now four games without a win for Carlos Corberan's men.

Millwall defended stoutly in the closing stages and have lost only one of their last nine games against West Brom.

    Ipswich 4-3 Blackburn

An absolute barnstormer at Portman Road.

Ipswich were on fire in the first half and imposed their will on Blackburn to go up 3-1 at the break.

But Rovers were full of energy in the second half and came out firing to wrestle momentum away from the hosts and clawed themselves back into the game to draw level 3-3.

But the Tractor Boys showed their quality and Massimo Luongo's goal on the 79th minute was enough to get the win and push his side up to second in the Championship table.

    Rotherham 1-1 Preston

Preston extend their unbeaten start to eight games and are the only side yet to be beaten in the Championship this season.

Rotherham took the lead through former North End striker Jordan Hugill but Liam Lindsay levelled things on the stroke of half-time.

The visitors drop off the top of the Championship while the Millers are three without a win and drop into the relegation zone.

    Swansea 3-0 Sheff Wed

Swansea have their first win but Sheffield Wednesday are rock-bottom and the only winless side left in the division.

Jamal Lowe's first-half penalty and quickfire goals from Jerry Yates and Charlie Patino in the second half have heaped more pressure on under-fire Owls boss Xisco Munoz.

A bleak day for the visitors.

    Plymouth 6-2 Norwich

Plymouth celebrate a goal in their win over NorwichImage source, Rex Features

This was a demolition at Home Park.

Plymouth were all over Norwich and Morgan Whittaker scored a hat-trick, while Luke Cundle added a last-gasp sixth.

Norwich scored two - one from the penalty spot - in the second half but if we are being honest, the Canaries were nowhere in this game.

The Pilgrims stop their two game skid. Norwich's woes continue.

    Middlesbrough 2-1 Southampton

Middlesbrough, who were bottom of the Championship before this match, have their first win of the season over a mistake prone Southampton.

Riley McGree's strike levelled the score just before the break and Jonny Howson got the second from the penalty spot midway through the second half.

Boro probably could have scored a third if it wasn't for Saints keeper Gavin Bazunu who pulled off some brilliant saves.

It's a long and painful journey home for Southampton who have now lost four in a row and been outscored 12-2 in the process. Shocking.

  18. League Two updatepublished at 16:54 British Summer Time 23 September 2023
